Quatre changements de parti architectural interviennent entre 1160 et 1230 environ, changements qui traduisent une volonté de bâtir un édifice plus imposant s’inspirant, pour la nef et la façade des formes venues du nord. L’insertion de l’important porche nord à deux niveaux, non prévu initialement, répond à une nécessité que précisent les sculptures. Celles-ci forment un programme cohérent : Le porche annonce le rôle de médiateur de Martin et de sa communauté pour le sauvetage des âmes, rôle qu’il tient du fait de sa lutte constante contre l’hérésie. L’exemple du sauvetage de l’âme du comte de Blois en apporte la preuve, exemple exposé tant au soubassement du porche que dans la chapelle haute ou encore aux retombées des colonnettes engagées de la nef. Cette iconographie se conjugue avec celle développée sur les clefs de la voûte de la nef, clefs qui insistent sur le rôle du Christ rédempteur. Les sculptures des parties orientales se rapportent à la vie de la communauté. Candes présente donc un message original, peut-être mis en place pour contrebalancer l’influence grandissante de Fontevrault toute proche. / Between 1160 and 1230, approximately, four modifications were introduced in the architectural plan. These modifications reveal a desire to build a more noble structure, inspired, for the nave and the frontage, by the northern fashion. The addition of an important two level porch, which was not in the primitive plan, corresponds to an intention defined by the sculptures. These sculptures express a coherent design : the porch indicates the mediation of Martin and his community in the salvations of the souls, mediation due to his constant fight against Heresy. The example of the salvation of the Count of Blois’ soul proves this mediation. This example can be seen in the stylobate of the porch as well as in the high chapel or in the springs of the small columns in the nave. This iconography is linked to the one brought out on the keystones of the nave, those underline the role of Christ the Redeemer. The sculptures in the eastern parts are dedicated to the life of the community. Thus, Candes offers an original message maybe instated to counterbalance the growing influence of the nearby Fontevrault.
