The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how the books The Case for God and 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life by the historian Karen Armstrong has been discussed and debated in swedish mass media. Very few academics in the discipline of the history of religions has had such a broad public success as Karen Armstrong, and it is therefore important to acknowledge how major themes and issues in her writings are discussed on the public arena. With the aid of reception theory developed by Hans Robert Jauss and by Stuart Hall, I present three conclusions about the mass media reception of The Case for God and 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life. First of all, I show that the reception of the two books by Armstrong is dependent on differences in expectations and experiences, and that it is possible to spot and acknowledge these differences in the actual texts that make up the reception. Second, I give evidence to how central binary constructions in the arguments put forward by Armstrong are used and developed upon in the reception. Third, I demonstrate how differences in perceptions about Karen Armstrong as a person plays a major part in the reception, and that Armstrong herself is an active part in the construction of her own media image.

One of the limiting factors in gas turbine design is the allowable metal temperatures and loads in critical components. Specially designed superalloys are used when the conditions are most severe. One of these superalloys is Inconel 718. To be able to design components for higher temperature and higher loads, an accurate understanding and computational model of the material is needed. In this thesis the deformation mechanisms of Inconel 718 have been investigated and a theoretical basis for modelling in a large deformation context has been established. Finally a viscoplastic nonlinear kinematic hardening material model with an Armstrong-Frederick backstress evolution law has been implemented as a first step in describing the constitutive behaviour of the material Inconel 718.

Nous étudions la récurrence et la postérité dans la métaphysique analytique contemporaine d’un certain nombre d’arguments élaborés par Bertrand Russell afin de répondre à une question d’ontologie fondamentale : comment les éléments de l’être sont-ils reliés ? Comment peut-on répondre à cette question sans tomber sous le coup d’une régression bradleyenne ? Interroger le statut des régressions bradleyennes (régressions vicieuses ou régressions inoffensives ?), déterminer la nature des relations (particuliers ou universels ? ; relations internes ou relations externes ?), ou bien encore adopter une perspective plus épistémologique, celle des vérifacteurs, sont ici les voies explorées. Nous étudions plus particulièrement le réalisme immanent de D. Armstrong, la théorie des tropes de K. Campbell, le nominalisme de la ressemblance de G. Rodriguez-Pereyra et le réalisme modéré de D. W. Mertz. / The broad objective of this study is to examine the recurrence and the posterity of some arguments drawn up by Bertrand Russell to answer one of the main ontological question: How the elements of the being are related ? How can we answer this question without raising a bradleyan endless regress? Several strategies are assessed here: answering these questions by questioning the status of the bradleyan regresses (vicious or harmless regresses?), defining the nature of the relations (particulars or universals?, internal or external relations?) or using the epistemological perspective of the truthmakers. This study is focused on D. Armstrong’s Immanent Realism, K. Campbell’s Theory of Tropes, G. Rodriguez-Pereyra’s Resemblance Nominalism, and D. W. Mertz’s Moderate Realism.

The purpose of this thesis was to draw new insights on Thomas Berger’s classic American novel, Little Big Man, and his representation of fictional violence that is a substantial aspect of any text on the Indian Wars and “Custer’s Last Stand”. History’s major world wars led to shifts in the political climate and a noted change in the way that violence was represented in the arts. Historical, fictional, and cinematic treatments of “Custer’s Last Stand” and violence were each considered in relation to the text. Berger's version of the famed story is a revision of history that shows the protagonist as a dual-member of two violent societies. The thesis concluded that Berger’s updated American legends and unique “white renegade” character led to a representation of violence that spoke to the current state of affairs in 1964 when the world was becoming much more hostile and chaotic place.

Magister Artium - MA / According to our ordinary conception of voluntary action, our actions are the causal result of conscious intentions. To take a very basic example: I wish to take a sip of coffee, and I therefore reach out and take hold of the mug. However, studies performed by Libet challenge this ordinary conception. What Libet found in his experiments was that the brain initiates voluntary actions and the person becomes consciously aware of an intention to act only some 400 msec after the brain’s initiation; for instance, my brain has already initiated the process of causing my arm to reach out and take hold of the mug some 400 msec before I am aware that I wish to take a sip of coffee. That is, conscious intention doesn’t appear to precede voluntary action at all – it actually follows it (or follows its initiation, at least), and thus Libet’s studies present a serious challenge to our ordinary conception of voluntary action. This project will investigate whether a particular theory of mind – namely, Armstrong’s Central State Materialism – can cope with the challenge posed by Libet’s studies and salvage our ordinary conception of voluntary action. Armstrong’s theory appears promising in this regard because his account of consciousness and introspection as higher-order states seems to allow room that we will become aware of our willings only after those willings are already initiated.
