Reorienting America: Race, Geopolitics, and the Repeal of Asian Exclusion, 1940-1952

This dissertation examines the movement to repeal the Asian exclusion laws in the United States during World War II and the early Cold War years. It situates campaigns for repeal in the context of two interrelated developments: African American civil rights activism in the United States and shifting U.S. geopolitical interests in post-1940 Asia. As U.S. foreign policy priorities pivoted toward Asia beginning in World War II, Americans' view of the world changed in ways that, at times, allowed geopolitics to supersede restrictions based on race. Drawing from U.S., Indian, and Korean sources, the project charts how a transnational cast of American missionaries, U.S. and Asian state officials, and Asian and Asian American activists used the newly expedient language and logic of geopolitics to end the racial exclusion of Asians from immigration and naturalization eligibility. The study highlights a paradox at the heart of the repeal campaigns: beginning in World War II, the perceived foreignness that underwrote the historical exclusion of Asians as “aliens ineligible to citizenship” legitimized them as spokespersons for repeal. During a time when few Americans had knowledge of Asia, Asian American activists parlayed their presumptive expertise as Asian “insiders” to secure a foothold as lobbyists on Capitol Hill. The strategy undermined Asian Americans’ claims to inclusion in the long-term, however, by reinforcing their image as racial foreigners in America. The dissertation builds on a growing body of literature interrogating the relationship between international developments and U.S. racial reform. Comparatively little scholarship about this period has looked beyond a white-black racial binary, in spite of Japanese internment, U.S. military occupations in postwar Japan and Korea, and unprecedented American intervention across Cold War Asia. My study demonstrates how developments particular to Asia – the Pacific front of World War II, Asian decolonization, and the Korean War – both facilitated and constrained the scope of legislative reform activists achieved. / History

Cultural tension and career development for Asian American college students| A phenomenological study

<p>This mixed methods, phenomenological study examined how cultural tension influences career development for Asian American community college students. Students initially completed Phinney's (1992) Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) and an instrument developed for this study called the Cultural Identification Survey. The mean for ethnic identity search was 3.49 and the mean for the ethnic identity commitment was 3.97. High exploration with high commitment corresponds to Phinney's third stage of ethnic identity development, ethnic identity achievement. On the Cultural Identification survey, the mean for "I identify more with my parents' culture" was 3.55, the mean for "I identify more with White culture than my parents' culture" was 2.80, the mean for "I identify with both White culture and my parents' culture" was 3.45, and the mean for "I feel caught between White culture and my parents' culture" was 2.62. Fourteen students who indicated either "often" or "all the time" to the statement "I feel caught between White culture and my parents' culture" participated in the interview portion of the study. The 14 participants received a mean of 3.30 for ethnic identity search and a mean of 3.56 for ethnic identity commitment on the MEIM corresponding with the ethnic achievement stage. Participants described how they experienced cultural tension through their relationships with their parents. The results indicated that through cultural tension, participants were able to move through the stages of ethnic identity development as described by Phinney (1990), Parental influence on career development, including their support, their understanding of careers, and their exposure to careers, was also found to be part of the participants' experiences. Cultural tension and their parental involvement created learning experiences that had an impact on the career decision-making process. </p>

The affect of acculturation on obesity among foreign-born Asians residing in the United States

<p> This study examined the relationship between acculturation and obesity in foreign-born Asians residing in the United States. Two proxies were used to measure level of acculturation: years of United States residency and English language use and proficiency. Hypothesis 1 predicted that acculturation measured as number of years of residence will positively predict obesity. Hypothesis 2 predicted that acculturation measured as English language preference and proficiency will positively predict obesity.</p><p> The study used data from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey. Study participants met two inclusion criteria: foreign born and Asian. Point Biserial was run to determine whether or not there was a correlation.</p><p> Results showed a weak relationship between obesity and both variable used to measure acculturation. Additional exploratory analysis was performed to determine whether or not there was a relationship between obesity and acculturation for each Asian ethnicity. Results of this exploratory analysis were mixed. </p>

The model minority at risk| Barriers to mental health access for Chinese Americans

<p> This thesis examines the role of limited English proficiency (LEP) as a contributing significant barrier to the mental health access for Chinese living in America. The literature purports that language barriers do present significant challenges to providing timely and effective mental health services worldwide. Additionally, studies highlight two reoccurring themes on the mental health of Chinese Americans, including their underutilization of mental health services and the premature termination of treatment in comparison to other nonminority clients. Using the 2009 dataset from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) 2009 Adult Questionnaire, data was analyzed and it was concluded that a relationship exists between mental health status and language proficiency. Further study is necessary to determine where it may be best for health professionals to invest their efforts in the mental health care of this deserving population. It would behoove organizations, communities, and health care leaders to peer deeper into the interconnected relationship between mental health utilization and language proficiency.</p>

Somatic Complaints and Chinese-American Adolescents: Examining the Role of Parent-child Relationships

Mental health needs of Asian-American youth have been documented as substantial and increasing, but limited research has identified explanatory mechanisms or possible targets of intervention for reducing mental health symptoms. The present study contributed to the limited existing research on self-regulatory abilities as mechanisms that may explain the linkage between Chinese-American parenting styles and adolescent somatization. A community sample of Chinese-American parent-adolescent dyads (N= 104) residing in the greater Houston, TX area were recruited to complete a battery of questionnaires containing measures of adolescent somatization, self-regulatory abilities, and parental psychological control. Correlational and regression analyses were conducted to test hypothesized relationships and models. Parent-reported emotional and cognitive self-regulatory control variables were found to mediate the relationship between utilization of aspects of both parent and adolescent-reported parental psychological control and parent-reported adolescent somatization. Additionally, lower parent-adolescent Asian values agreement level was found to predict higher parent-reported somatic complaint occurrence. Results suggest that multiple aspects of self-regulation serve as mediating mechanisms by which parenting styles may influence adolescent somatic complaint occurrence. Findings have implications for understanding of pathways to somatization (and mental health outcomes overall) in the Asian-American youth population.

Beyond Facts and Formality: How Different Genres Remember Japanese American Experiences During World War II

This thesis will compare and contrast how different genres tell the stories of Japanese American experiences during World War II. In the 1980s and 1990s the emergence of different genres such as memoirs, historical fiction, and documentaries, inspired a fresh approach to portraying history. Using the traditional historical monograph as a foil, this thesis will analyze how these newer genres can deepen our understanding of historic events and peoples on a personal, psychological, and emotional level. Topics of medium, authorship, affect, influence, and authenticity are commonly discussed in the comparisons of these genres. Each chapter will focus on one genre and analyze two works. Chapter 1 on memoirs examines Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and Nisei Memories by Paul Howard Takemoto. Chapter 2 on historical fiction will compare David Guterson’s narrative fiction novel Snow Falling on Cedars and Alan Parker’s narrative film Come See the Paradise. Chapter 3 on documentaries will discuss Ken Burns’ The War and Steven Okazaki’s Unfinished Business. Ultimately, while each work and each genre is unique, the significant commonality among them is their ability to expose the intimate and emotional aspects of historical experiences. This, in turn, prompts our engagement and emotional connection to the portrayed stories, which heightens our understanding of history in a more holistic way.

Experiencing Community through the Asian American Lens: A Qualitative Study of Photovoice Participants

The purpose of this study was to understand why there is such lack of citizen participation among Asian Americans, despite the exponential growth of Asian American population in the state. Based on the literature on sense of community, citizen participation, and psychological empowerment, it was speculated that how individuals experience community may influence their motivation to participate. With the goal to understand and document how Asian Americans define community and experience sense of community, a sample of Asian Americans were interviewed. These individuals were participants of the Photovoice project conducted by a local community-based organization. The second aim of the study was to explore if and how a project like Photovoice enhanced the sense of community among participants. The findings suggested that Asian Americans defined various types and multiple communities. Also, it was suggested that because Asian American community is an imposed community of people of diverse Asian background, Asian Americans may not necessarily define it as a community or experience sense of community within the community. Based on the experiences of the participants, Photovoice seem to have great potential in bringing such diverse group as Asian Americans together as a community. Limitations of the study and future directions are discussed.

A cross-cultural study of Hwa-Byung with middle-aged women between native Koreans in South Korea and Korean immigrants in the United States

<p> Hwa-Byung, known as an anger illness, was conceptualized in Korean culture and listed in the glossary under Culture-Bound Syndromes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Hwa-Byung develops when the emotions of anger have been suppressed for a long period of time and it becomes difficult to control those feelings. Common complaints of Hwa-Byung have two dimensions, psychological and physical symptoms. The prevalence of Hwa-Byung exhibits gender differences in that the majority of individuals who experience Hwa-Byung are women between the ages of 40 and 60. However, as the number of Korean immigrants in the United States continues to increase and their issues draw attention from researchers, the topic of Hwa-Byung receives little. Because Korean immigrants in the United States share a cultural background with their origin of ethnicity, and at the same time, may also assimilate the American culture during the acculturation process, this study will address the cultural differences in Hwa-Byung between native Koreans who live in South Korea and Korean immigrants in the United States. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine the differences and similarities of Hwa-Byung in native Korean middle-aged women in South Korea and Korean immigrants in the United States, roughly between the age range of late-30's to middle 60's, by investigating the influencing factors of stressful life events, stress response, anger expression, and demographic background. </p><p> A sample size of at least 200 participants, required for each group, using both paper-pencil and web-based methods, depended on participants' preferences, which were influenced by a gap in ages and the level of familiarity with and/or ability to access Internet. Participants were randomly selected from major cities, both in South Korea (including Seoul, Incheon, Busan, Daejeon, and Gyeonggi Province) and the United States (including Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles), using similar proportions of ages for both groups for the equivalences of participants in cross-cultural research. </p><p> Survey measures included five instruments: (a) the Hwa-Byung scale (Kwon, Kim, Park, Lee, Min, &amp; Kwon, 2008); (b) Life Stress for Korean women (Chon &amp; Kim, 2003); (c) stress response inventory (SRI) (Koh, Park, &amp; Kim, 2000); (d) anger expression (Hahn, Chon, Lee, &amp; Spielberger, 1997), and (e) demographic background that measured the variables used in this study. To minimize the weakness of language differences used in the different cultural contexts, survey packages for Korean immigrant participants in the United States were formatted in both Korean and English for each item. Thus, a translation process became necessary, especially for the Korean instruments of the Hwa-Byung Scale, Life Stress for Korean women and Stress Response Inventory (SRI), from Korean into Englishtwo of which were (originally developed by Korean researchers) . On the other hand, native Koreans submitted only the Korean version of questionnaires because they fully understood the meaning of questionnaire statements, as well as in order to get rid of possible distractions by the inclusion of English sentences.</p>

Intimate partner violence prevention for Korean American immigrants| A grant proposal

<p> The purpose of this project was to design a program, locate a potential funding source and write a grant to fund an intimate partner violence prevention program for the Korean American immigrant community in Los Angeles County. An extensive literature review was performed to investigate the prevalence and effects of intimate partner violence in the Korean immigrant community as well as identifying the need for culturally specific prevention interventions. A host agency was selected, Korean American Family Services, to propose a prevention workshop program in Los Angeles, California.</p><p> A search was conducted to locate an appropriate funder for the prevention workshops. The U.S. Department of Justice, Culturally and Linguistically Specific Services Program, was selected as a funding source for the grant program. Actual submission and/or funding of the grant was not required for the successful completion of this project.</p>

Cross Cultural Predictors of Blame Attribution in Marital and Non- Marital Rape

Victim blaming is one of the most prevalent obstacles in the recovery of sexual assault victims, especially in cases of marital rape. Given the media coverage of the Delhi rape case of December 2012, there has been an increase in international discourse regarding the impact of ethnic differences on rape culture, victim blaming, and gender equality. Indians, Indian Americans, and European Americans completed an online questionnaire that aimed to identify the potential effect of ethnicity and several other predictors on the attribution of blame in cases of marital and non- marital rape. Indian Americans were studied in order to investigate the possible effect of bicultural identity on blame attribution in rape cases. As hypothesized, Indian Americans scored between Indians and European Americans in almost all predictors of perpetrator, victim, and circumstance blame. Also consistent with study hypotheses, there were ethnic differences in blame attribution such that Indians blamed the victim and circumstance the most and blamed the perpetrator the least. There were no significant differences in blame behavior between Indian Americans and European Americans except for in cases of victim blame. As hypothesized, individualism, collectivism, rape myth acceptance, and system justification were significant predictors of victim, perpetrator, and circumstance blame. Additionally, there were significant correlations between types of blame, rape myth acceptance (RMA), and sexism. Also consistent with the hypothesis, perpetrators were blamed more in cases of non- marital rape than in cases of marital rape.
