The Effect of Group Assertiveness Training on Selected Cognitive VariablesWilliams, Dale W. 12 1900 (has links)
This study was conducted to investigate whether cognitive variables (as measured by six self-report inventories) covaried with changes in behavior following group assertiveness training as postulated by several assertiveness training theorists and practitioners. Statistical analysis of the data did not support any of the hypotheses. No significant differences were found between the groups on any of the self-report measures or the behavioral ratings, although experimental group subjects consistently scored higher (in the predicted direction) on all self-report measures or were rated higher than placebo group subjects. The hypotheses that experimental group subjects would exhibit significantly higher levels of self-reported assertiveness, self-acceptance, self-esteem, and self-confidence than placebo group subjects were rejected. The hypothesis that the experimental group would exhibit a significantly greater shift toward self-reported internal locus of control than the placebo group was rejected. The hypothesis that the experimental group would exhibit significantly larger decreases in levels of self-reported anxiety than the placebo group was also rejected. Furthermore, no support was found for the hypothesis that experimental group subjects would exhibit significantly higher levels of objectively-rated assertive behavior than placebo group subjects. An examination of the data revealed substantial improvements on each of the six self-report measures for subjects in both groups. These data were treated statistically with a one-tailed t-test for correlated means. The t-test data indicated that both groups improved significantly on all cognitive variable measures from pretest to posttest.

The present study aimed determine the relationship between Assertiveness and Coping styles of a group of workers from a Family Business of the Poultry sector in Peru. The sample consisted of 77 workers, 44 men and 33 women, aged between 18 and over 55, belonging to the administrative areas of the company. The instruments that were used the Coping Test adapted to Peru (Casuso, 1996) and the Rathus Assertiveness Test, the Costa Rican version (León and Vargas, 2009). The results revealed the existence of a moderate correlation between both variables, as well as internal correlations between coping styles and between assertiveness types. Which were discussed in four main findings: a) Relationship between assertiveness and coping style focused on the problem; b) Relationship between assertiveness and coping style focused on emotion; c) Assertiveness in family firms; and d) Coping styles in family firms. Finally, recommendations were given for the future management of both variables in the company where the tests were applied. / Tesis

Исследование ассертивности у старших дошкольников : магистерская диссертация / Study assertive preschoolersКожевникова, М. Л., Kozhevnikova, M. L. January 2016 (has links)
Master's thesis contains theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part deals with the formation of assertiveness in preschoolers as a purposeful process, contributing to a more complete disclosure of their inner personality, successful social adaptation among peers and society in general. Since it is in the pre-school age, there is a necessity of formation of assertiveness, motivation background in training activities, and achievement motivation in the future. In the empirical part of the dissertation presents a program aimed at consolidating the obtained skills and knowledge about the features of assertive behavior preschoolers podobranny exercises aimed at all components of assertive behavior by means of emotional content. Thus, the need to build assertiveness in preschool children is considered as one of the urgent problems of modern education of the younger generation. In conclusion, the thesis made the appropriate conclusions for the problem under study.

The Effects of Assertiveness Training on Marital AdjustmentMead, Valerie H. 01 May 1978 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of v assertive training on the marital adjustment of tho se participating. It was of particular interest to identify the effects of training wives only as compared to training couples jointly in assertiveness.
There were a total of 56 subjects sampled for this study, constituting 28 marriages, all investigated for marital adjustment. All of the subjects were volunteers and were obtained through the Women's Center at Utah State University. The subjects were placed in one of two treatment conditions depending upon the condition for which they volunteered. The wives only treatment condition provided assertiveness training exclusively for the wives of the couples participating. Both husbands and wives received training in the couples treatment condition. All of the 56 subjects, both husbands and wives, completed the Marital-Adjustment Test during the first and last session of assertive training. The assertive training groups met for six weeks for two hours each week.
An analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data for the first two hypotheses. The pretest scores for both treatment conditions for husbands and wives were held constant and the posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test were compared for both husbands and wives of the other treatment condition.
The f test for significant differences in correlations was used to test the following questions: (a) Is there a difference in the amount of correlation of the pretest scores and the posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test for husbands and wives in the wives only treatment condition? and (b) Is there a difference in the amount of correlation of the pretest scores and the posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test for husbands and wives in the couples treatment condition?
It may be concluded that there is no advantage for marital adjustment when husbands and wives are both given assertiveness training as opposed to the wife only receiving training.
There was a statistical difference (beyond the .01 level of significance) between the correlations of the pretest and posttest scores for husbands and wives in the wives only treatment condition. No difference in amount of correlation was found between pretest and posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test for husbands and wives in the couples treatment condition.
It was concluded that when spouses were trained together, no change in perceptions of marital adjustment occurred. When wives were trained alone, perceptions of marital adjustment between spouses was in greater agreement.
No evidence was found that marital adjustment was affected by teaching assertion skills to the wife only as opposed to teaching the couple.

The Role of Relaxation and Systematic Desensitization in the Efficacy of Assertiveness TrainingCarlson, Larry J. 01 May 1978 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to clarify the role of anxiety management techniques (cue-controlled relaxation, systematic desensitization) as components of an assertiveness training program.
Volunteers from Utah State University and the surround ing community were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups and a control group which were used in a pre-post change comparison design. Treatment groups consisted of: (1) cue-controlled relaxation plus assertiveness training, (2) systematic desensitization plus assertiveness training, and (3) assertiveness training extended. The control group was a delayed treatment control. All subjects were administered pre-tests with the following instruments: two self report inventories (the College Self-Expression Scale and the Rathus Assertiveness Scale) and a Behavioral Performance Test. The Behavioral Performance Test consisted of ten separate multiple stimulus role playing situations (five pre-test and five posttest) which were videotaped and rated on four performance variables: (1) verbal content, (2) percent of eye contact, (3) assertive affect, and (4) overall assertiveness.
All treatment groups were exposed to four two-hour sessions of basic assertiveness training which consisted of shaping procedures (i.e. behavioral rehearsal, modeling, etc.). Treatment groups I and II were provided six additional hours of training in cue-controlled relaxation and systematic desensitization, respectively, while Group III was provided six additional hours of basic assertiveness instruction. Each of the treatment groups received equal amounts (14 hours) of training exposure over an eight-week period. At the conclusion of training, all subjects were posttested using the same measures used for pre-testing.
The results of the study indicated (l) that no one treatment approach can be considered superior or inferior to the other in its effectiveness in increasing assertive behavior, and (2) that all treatment groups showed significantly greater ability to increase assertiveness than was evidenced with the control group.
