Milky Way-like galaxy simulations in the Gaia era: disk large scale structures and baryonic contentRoca Fàbrega, Santi 26 November 2014 (has links)
Simulations have shown to be one of the best tools to study properties of galactic large scale structures and their effects on to the local kinematics of stars. The aims of this thesis are: i) To obtain realistic N-body models that allow us to analyse kinematics, dynamics and internal structure of non-axisymmetric components in galaxies, ii) to learn how to control numerical effects and also how to distinguish them from the proper physical ones, iii) to find observable parameters from stellar kinematics that can give us information about formation, evolution and nature of the large scale structures in galaxies and, iv) to test which of such methods can be used to distinguish among spiral arm natures in real galaxies.
In this thesis, using high resolution simulations obtained with different codes and initial condition techniques, we find that exist two different behaviours for the rotation frequency of transient spiral arms like structures. Whereas unbarred disks present spiral arms nearly corotating with disk particles, strong barred models (bulged or bulge-less) quickly develop a bar-spiral structure dominant in density, with a pattern speed almost constant in radius (Roca-Fàbrega et al. 2013). Preliminary results also indicate that particles in barred models move inside the spiral structures.
A second result we present in the thesis has been obtained mapping the kinematics of stars in the simulated galaxy disks with spiral arms using the velocity ellipsoid vertex deviation (lv). For this study we have used both test particle and high resolution N-body simulations. What we have found is that for all barred models, spiral arms rotate closely to a rigid body manner and there the vertex deviation values correlate with the density peaks position bounded by overdense and underdense regions. However, the most interesting result is that In such cases, vertex deviation sign changes from negative to positive when crossing the spiral arms toward disk rotation, in regions where the spiral arms are in between corotation (CR) and the Outer Lindblad Resonance (OLR). By contrast, when the arm sections are inside the CR and outside the OLR, lv changes from negative to positive. We propose that measurements of the vertex deviations pattern can be used to trace the position of the main resonances of the spiral arms (Roca-Fàbrega et al. 2014).
Finally we present a new cosmological Milky Way like galaxy simulation that includes both the collisionless N-body and also the gas components. This simulation has been obtained using the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) N-body code ART (Kravtsov et al 1999) plus the hydrodynamics and physical processes presented by Kravtsov et al 2003. The MW like system has been evolved inside a 28 Mpc cosmological box with a spatial resolution of 109 pc. At z=0 the system has an Mvir = 7.33·10^11Msun. We have observed how a well defined disk is formed inside the dark matter halo and the overall amount of gas and stars is comparable with MW observations. Several non-axisymmetric structures arise out of the disk. We have also observed that a huge reservoir of hot gas is present at large distances from the disk. Gas column density, emission and dispersion measures have been computed from inside the simulated disk at a position of 8 kpc from the center and in several different directions. Our preliminary results reveal that the distribution of hot gas is non-isotropic according with observations. After a careful analysis we confirm that due to the anisotropy in the gas distribution more than 50 random observations of different sky regions are needed to recover the real distribution of hot gas in the galactic halo.

Bayes ian data analys i s for l i sa pathfinder. Techniques applied to system identification experimentsKarnesis, Nikolaos 13 January 2015 (has links)
Gravitational waves are a prediction of Einstein's General Relativity, the detection and analysis of which will open a new area in our understanding of the Universe. Indeed, these waves carry information from systems with strong gravity and are very difficult to observe with conventional instruments, which are based on the detection of light. Today, we have experimental evidence of the existence of gravitational waves, as the variation of the orbital period of the binary pulsar PSRB1913 + 16 (Nobel Prize 1993). However, there has been no detection. The scientific community is pursuing this detection with several observatories spread around the world: LIGO (USA), VIRGO (Italy, France), GEO600 (Germany, UK), LCGT (Japan ), etc.
LISA (Laser Interferomer Space Antenna) is a proposal to put one of these observatories in heliocentric orbit using three satellites that contain masses in free fall. A laser interferometer is used to measure the distance between them. The satellites will be separated 1 Mkm, resulting in a triangular configuration that follows the Earth in its orbit. This proposal was accepted by the European Agency Espacia in 2013, as the subject of a mission to be launched in the early 2030's.
This thesis is part of the LISA Pathfinder mission, which is the precursor mission of LISA and has a release date in 2015. This mission will test the technology required for the future LISA mission and therefore contains the main elements (laser, test mass, etc.) but in a smaller version and in a single satellite. The main scientific objective is to measure the relative acceleration between two masses in free fall to levels down to 10^(-14) m / s^2 / Hz ^(1/2) in the low frequency band, i.e. 1mHz.
This thesis develops the methods known as Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), which are used, among others, for the estimation of parameters. These techniques have been put to the test in recent years through various campaigns with simulated data and are currently part of the LTPDA, a MATLAB toolbox developed by the collaboration for the analysis of data from the mission. The work in this thesis describes in detail the application of these techniques to estimate the parameters that describe the dynamics of the test mass inside the satellite.
Similarly, we have developed statistical techniques beyond the estimation of parameters in order to apply them to what is known as model selection, i.e. the evaluation of different statistical models to determine which one allows a better description of the data. In this respect, we have evaluated the different options available in the literature and, in particular, we have established the Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo (RJMCMC) as a tool to carry out these studies during operations. This technique allows the comparison of models of different dimensionality, which represents a generalization of the MCMC methods.
The techniques and results obtained in this thesis will be used during the operations of the LISA Pathfinder mission, which will open the way for future detection of gravitational waves in space.

On the origin of masses at the LHCGonzález Fraile, Juan 05 September 2014 (has links)
Tesi realitzada a l'Institut de Ciències del Cosmos de Barcelona (ICC-UB) / In this thesis we present several studies on the origin of masses at the LHC. First we study the indirect effects of new physics on the couplings of the recently discovered Higgs boson and on the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) sector interactions. In a model independent framework these effects can be parametrized in terms of an effective Lagrangian at the electroweak scale. In the first Chapter we present the effective Lagrangian description based on the linear realization of the electroweak symmetry, where the Higgs particle is assumed to be part of an SU(2)L doublet. We discuss a choice of dimension–six operators guided by the existing data, and we study the phenomenology of the operators. We perform a global analysis to the existing Higgs, triple gauge boson vertex and electroweak precision data, coming from LHC, Tevatron, LEP and low energy observables. Finally we exploit the interesting complementarity between the studied Higgs and triple gauge boson vertex measurements in order to test the linear realization. In the second Chapter we present two alternative Lagrangian descriptions. First, we study the non–linear or chiral effective Lagrangian, where now the Higgs is not part of an SU(2)L doublet. We describe the chiral operators and, while focusing on the phenomenological di.erences with respect to the linear realization, we also perform the first global analysis of the non–linear basis. Second, we present the Lagrangian parametrization commonly used to measure and describe the triple gauge boson vertex WWZ. We perform a collider analysis where we optimize the LHC capability to measure this vertex, obtaining an impressive LHC potential to improve the current sensitivity on anomalous interactions. We focus on their relation with the disentanglement of the Higgs nature. In the second part of the thesis we study the origin of masses at the LHC by the direct exploration of new resonances related to several beyond the Standard Model descriptions. In the third Chapter we study new vector resonances that couple to electroweak gauge boson pairs, which are common resonances on several EWSB extensions of the Standard Model. We analyze the LHC potential to determine the spin of these resonances, and furthermore we use the present available LHC public analyses to constrain the existence of the new neutral vector resonances, Z’, obtaining the strongest exclusion bounds on their existence. In the last Chapter we analyze the LHC potential to access the mechanism related to the origin of the neutrino masses. We study the different characteristics of a model that, while generating the observed pattern of neutrino masses and mixing, can lead to observable TeV signatures. We describe the phenomenology of the model and the new heavy leptons that are introduced, to finally optimize and analyze the LHC potential to observe these new partners, finding again very promising results.

Stellar activity in exoplanet hostsHerrero Casas, Enrique 06 October 2014 (has links)
Tesi realitzada a l''Institut de Ciències de l'Espai (IEEC-CSIC) / Most of the efforts on the search and characterization of Earth-like exoplanets are currently focused on low mass stars. Some important properties related to the structure and processes in this type of stars are still unknown, so a careful characterization is essential as one of the next steps in exoplanet sciences.
The characterization of stellar activity in low mass stars was carried out through several techniques that allowed us both to model and to simulate the relationships between the observational data and the stellar properties. Several empyrical relations for low mass stars allow to find correlations between certain activity indicators and the rotation period. These have permitted us to generate synthetic samples of stars with stochastic distributions of stellar and geometric properties allowing to estimate the inclination of the rotation axis from the distribution in the activity-vsini diagram. The methodology was applied to a sample of 1200 observed low mass stars and the best candidates for a targeted transit search were selected.
Spot modelling techniques allow to obtain physical information about the stellar surface from time series photometric and spectroscopic data. In this work we analyse Kepler photometry of LHS 6343 A, an M-dwarf being eclipsed by a brown dwarf companion every 12.718 days, and showing photometric oscillations with the same periodicity and a phase lag of 100º from the eclipses. The accurate modeling of the Kepler data allowed to explain these oscillations with the presence of active regions appearing at a fixed longitude, thus suggesting a possible magnetic connection between both components. On the other hand, we also studied an alternative explanation for the photometric oscillations in LHS 6343 A in terms of the Doppler beaming effect, showing that this could be the main cause of the observed oscillations.
Stellar activity effects are responsible for the noise observed at different amplitude and timescales on time series data. Such noise represents one of the main limitations for exoplanetary sciences. In order to characterize it, we designed a methodology to simulate the photosphere of an active rotating star through the integration of small surface elements from Phoenix atmosphere models. This allows to characterize the signal produced by activity and further study its relationship with the stellar properties, as well as the possible effects produced on exoplanet measurements. The methodology allowed us to present several strategies in order to correct or reduce the effects of spots on the photometry of exoplanet transits, as these may induce significant variations on the measurement of the planetary radius.
We focused on a comprehensive analysis of HD 189733, a K5 star hosting a giant planet, which has simultaneous photometric (MOST) and spectroscopic (SOPHIE) data available. An accurate surface map was obtained using the methodology above, accurately reproducing the light curve and radial velocity observations. Such map was used in order to study the effects of activity on the exoplanet transits. We showed that the effects of spot-crossing events are significant even for mid-infrared wavelengths. Moreover, the chromatic effects of spots not occulted by the planet show a signal with a wavelength dependence and amplitude that are very similar to the signature of the atmosphere of a planet dom- inated by dust. The radial velocity theoretical curve is in agreement with the observations up to the typical instrumental systematics of SOPHIE.
The results from this work conclude that it is essential to correctly model the stellar activity signals for exoplanetary sciences, and we provide some tools and strategies to characterize and reduce such effects and extract astrophysical information.

Cosmological perturbations including matter loops. A study in de SitterFröb, Markus Benjamin 09 December 2013 (has links)
In this thesis we studied quantum effects in de Sitter space coming from the interaction of gravitons and matter. We derived the lowenergy effective action for metric perturbations which includes corrections from matter loops, in a flat background for scalar fields of arbitrary mass and minimal curvature coupling, and in a de Sitter background for massless scalar fields of minimal and conformal coupling.
From this action we derived the semiclassical Einstein equations, which in this case give a small correction to the relation between the cosmological constant and the Hubble constant. To study the stability of the de Sitter background, we derived the equations satisfied by general linear metric perturbations, using the order reduction method which in contrast to a strictly perturbative treatment produces solutions that are reliable for extended periods of time. We solved these equations for an initial vacuum state and for general initial states. In both cases, the induced changes in the Riemann tensor, which is a gauge invariant and local observable, are small and vanish in the infinite future. In this way, we extended the classical nohair theorems of de Sitter
space to the quantum case.
We calculated also the two-point function of these perturbations, using a generalization of the flat-space iε prescription that permitted us to define an interacting vacuum state ε in the infinite past. From this correlation function, we obtained a cosmological observable, the power spectrum of tensorial perturbations. The size of the quantum corrections is too small to be measured, being appreciable only if the Hubble constant were of a magnitude comparable to the Planck scale, where the effective theory ceases to be valid.
As a local observable, we calculated the two-point function of the Riemann tensor. The result was decomposed into correlation functions of the Weyl and Ricci tensors and the Ricci scalar, which are de Sitter invariant, showing that there is no physical breaking of this invariance. The twopoint function decay exponentially for large separations, showing that the background curvature acts as an effective mass for the graviton.
To generalize these calculations to the interaction with other kinds of matter, we exploited the Bianchi identities to show that the two-point function of the Riemann tensor always is de Sitter invariance if this is the case for the stress-energy tensor. We gave explicit formulas to calculate it, and saw that the result is completely determined except for an integration constant. This constant can naturally be interpreted as the strength of free gravitons which propagate in the background spacetime, and depends on the unknown coefficients that multiply terms in the gravitational action which involve squares of curvature tensors.

Precise photometric redshifts with narrow-band filters, quality cuts and their impact on the measured galaxy clusteringMartí Sanahuja, Pol 16 May 2014 (has links)
El cartografiat Physics of the Accelerating Universe (PAU) al telescopi
correcció podria, doncs, ajudar a mitigar alguns d'aquests efectes
sistemàtics. / The Physics of the Accelerating Universe (PAU) survey at the William
Herschel Telescope (WHT) will use a new optical camera (PAUCam)
with a large set of narrowband
filters to perform a photometric galaxy
survey with a quasispectroscopic
redshift precision of σ(z)/(1 + z) ~
0.0035 and map the largescale
structure of the universe in three
dimensions up to iAB < 22.523.0.
In the first part of the thesis we present
a detailed photoz
performance study using photometric simulations for
40 equallyspaced
12.5nmwide
(FWHM) filters with a ~25% overlap
and spanning the wavelength range from 450 nm to 850 nm, together
with a ugrizY broadband
filter system. We then present the migration
matrix rij, containing the probability that a galaxy in a true redshift bin j is
measured in a photoz
bin i, and study its effect on the determination of
galaxy autoand
crosscorrelations.
Finally, we also study the impact on
the photoz
performance of small variations of the filter set in terms of
width, wavelength coverage, etc., and find a broad region where slightly
modified filter sets provide similar results, with the original set being close
to optimal.
In the first part of the thesis we make use of a photometric redshift
(photoz)
quality cut, that is removing those galaxies from the sample for
which one suspects that the photoz
estimation might be unreliable, in
order to achieve the stringent photoz
precision needed. In the second
part of the thesis, we show that applying these photoz
quality cuts
blindly can grossly bias the measured galaxy correlations within and
across photometric redshift bins. We then develop a simple and effective
method to correct for this using the data themselves. Finally, we apply
the method to the MegaZ
catalog, containing about a million luminous
red galaxies in the redshift range 0.45 < z < 0.65. After splitting the
sample into four Δz = 0.05 photoz
bins using the BPZ algorithm, we see
how our corrections bring the measured galaxy autoand
crosscorrelations
into agreement with expectations. We then look for the
BAO feature in the four bins, with and without applying the photoz
quality cuts, and find a broad agreement between the BAO scales
extracted in both cases. Intriguingly, we observe a correlation between
galaxy density and photoz
quality even before any photoz
quality cuts
are applied. This may be due to uncorrected observational effects that
result in correlated gradients across the sky of the galaxy density and
the galaxy photoz
precision. Our correction procedure could also help to
mitigate some of these systematic effects.

Theory & observations of the PWN-SNR complexMartín Rodríguez, Jonatan 21 July 2014 (has links)
In this work, we study theoretical and observational issues about pulsars (PSRs), pulsar
wind nebulae (PWNe) and supernova remnants (SNRs). In particular, the spectral modeling
of young PWNe and the X-ray analysis of SNRs with magnetars comparing their characteristics
with those remnants surrounding canonical pulsars.
The spectra of PWNe range from radio to γ-rays. They are the largest class of identified
Galactic in γ-rays increasing the number from 1 to ∼30 during the last years. We have developed
a detailed spectral code which reproduces the electromagnetic spectrum of PWNe in
free expansion (tage .10 kyr). We shed light and try to understand issues on time evolution
of the spectra, the synchrotron self-Compton dominance in the Crab Nebula, the particle
dominance in PWNe detected at TeV energies and how physical parameters constrain the
detectability of PWNe at TeV. We make a systematic study of all Galactic, TeV-detected,
young PWNe which allows to find correlations and trends between parameters. We also
discuss about the spectrum of those PWNe not detected at TeV and if models with low magnetized
nebulae can explain the lack of detection or, on the contrary, high-magnetization
models are more favorable.
Regarding the X-ray analysis of SNRs, we use X-ray spectroscopy in SNRs with magnetars
to discuss about the formation mechanism of such extremely magnetized PSRs. The
alpha-dynamo mechanism proposed in the 1990’s produces an energy release that should
have influence in the energy of the SN explosion. We extend the work done previously done
by Vink & Kuiper (2006) about the energetics of the SN explosion looking for this energy
release and we look for the element ionization and the X-ray luminosity and we compare
our results with other SNRs with an associated central source.

Observing the VHE Gamma Ray Sky with the MAGIC Telescopes: the Blazar B3 2247+381 and the Crab PulsarGiavitto, Gianluca 21 February 2013 (has links)
veces a descubrimientos sorprendentes.
The goal of this thesis is to expand our understanding of the physics of two
astrophysical source classes amongst the most prominent emitters of non-thermal
radiation: blazars and pulsars. In particular, the thesis reports the
observation of the blazar B3 2247+381 and the Crab pulsar.
This study was carried out by measuring gamma-ray emission above ~50 GeV from
these sources with the MAGIC telescopes.
The two source classes covered in this thesis are not closely related,
however they represent two interesting examples of how gamma-ray observations
between 50 and few hundreds of GeV, an energy range close to the threshold of
MAGIC, can lead to advancements in the understanding of the emission mechanisms,
and sometimes to surprising discoveries.
Blazars are a type of active galaxies with a relativistic jet powered by their
central black hole and directed towards the observer. Gamma-ray emission
originates from charged particles accelerated in the jet.
The nature of the accelerated particles, the position of the emission and the
acceleration mechanism are some of the open questions about blazars.
Furthermore, their observation can provide indirect limits on the extragalactic
background light (EBL), important for understanding early galaxy formation and
evolution.
B3 2247+381 was observed already by MAGIC in monoscopic mode in 2006, but eluded
detection. In 2009, the commencement of stereoscopic observations enhanced the
sensitivity of MAGIC, so it was proposed for re-observation. It was detected in
October 2010, leading to the determination of its spectrum above 200 GeV. No
significant variability could be found.
This evidence, together with observations at other wavelengths, is interpreted
using a simple one-zone Synchrotron Self Compton (SSC) model, with parameters
similar to those adopted for other blazars.
Even if B3 2247+381 was not a surprising source, these results confirm the
validity of SSC models and enlarge the data base to be used in EBL and blazar
population studies.
Pulsars are highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars that emit periodic
radiation at all wavelengths. Until recently, no pulsar was detected above 100
GeV, in agreement with the “outer gap” (OG) model predictions of an exponential
cutoff in the energy spectrum at few GeV. For the Crab pulsar however, the
presence of said cutoff was questioned in 2010 by MAGIC monoscopic measurement.
MAGIC observed the Crab pulsar in stereoscopic mode between 2009 and 2011,
collecting 73 hours of good quality data. A plug-in for the TEMPO2 timing
software was written to calculate the event phases using radio ephemerides. The
analysis cuts were customized to obtain the lowest energy threshold possible.
A significant pulsation (>6.8 sigma) was detected in the energy range 46 - 416 GeV.
The folded light curve shows two peaks (P1 and P2), aligned with the ones at
lower energies, but narrower and with P1/P2 ratio of ~0.5.
The phase-resolved gamma-ray energy spectra continue as a power-law with a
spectral index ~-4 up to the highest energies, in stark disagreement with all
predictions. An extended OG model interprets this emission as high-altitude
inverse Compton scattering of secondary and tertiary pairs on IR/UV photons.
Other explanations exists, some predicting spectral features testable with
further MAGIC observations. It remains to be understood if the Crab pulsar is
unique in its kind or if gamma-ray emission up to hundreds of GeV is present in
other pulsars.
During the course of this thesis I was also actively involved the work for the
MAGIC camera and readout upgrade, which will assure more efficient and stabler
observations in the future.

Constraining Cosmological Models of Dark EnergyDuran Sancho, Ivan 19 July 2013 (has links)
Nowadays the Universe appears to be undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion, as witnessed by supernovae data and later corroborated by a host a cosmological measurements -very recently by the Planck satellite. While this expansion can be described in Einstein’s theory of gravity by invoking the existence of a positive but exceedingly small cosmological constant, Λ, connected to the quantum vacuum, many alternative, and sometimes sophisticated, explanations have been proposed. Roughly, the energy content of the present universe can be split into 5% of baryonic matter and 95% of a non-visible (dubbed the “dark sector” because its components do not interact electromagnetically) whose 25% consists of non-relativistic, weakly interacting massive particles (“cold dark matter”) and a 75% of a component with a huge negative pressure, the so-called “dark energy”. The nature of the latter component is completely unknown; this justifies that many “trial” candidates have been proposed. By far, the simplest and most successful one is the cosmological constant, mentioned above. However, it suffers from two main drawbacks at the theoretical level: the coincidence problem and the fine tuning problem. The aim of this Memoir is to propose and constrain cosmological models of dark energy that circumvent these difficulties.
This Memoir is organized as follows: The Chapters §2, §3 and §4 introduce basic concepts widely used when considering the different models that conforms our research work. The following Chapters focus on the different cosmological models. In §5 dark energy is considered connected to the holographic principle and posits that it interacts (also non-gravitationally) with dark matter. The holographic principle sets a length scale, in this case the Hubble length, i.e., the scale of the causally connected events. In §6 the previous model is studied more deeply and an alternative to it is presented. Both models share identical background evolution but each component behaves differently, which induces a diverse behavior at the perturbative level. This allows to observationally discriminate one model from the other.
A further holographic dark energy model is proposed in §7; this one based on the Ricci length (i.e., the maximum size a perturbation can have leading to a black hole). Again, a non-gravitational interaction is assumed between dark energy and dark matter. In §8, a unified dark model (featuring a unification between dark matter ad dark energy) previously proposed is studied. Since the parameter space that fits the observational data is very narrow (and also in view of its theoretical interest), we decompose the single energy component into cold dark matter and quantum vacuum interacting with one another. As a
consequence the allowed parameter space gets substantially augmented. Although the models mentioned above mimic at the background level the standard ΛCDM model, the dark components evolve very differently. To rigorously study them, the numerical codes for the cosmological perturbations must be suitably modified, with the drawback of notably increasing the computational time. This is much alleviated in §9 where a novel method
to calculate the matter power spectrum of dark energy models is proposed. Finally, in §10 three model independent parameterizations of the deceleration parameter, based on solid thermodynamic arguments, are proposed and contrasted with the observational data.
