In the Framework of Humans Interacting with Robots

Gebru, Israel Dejene 13 April 2018 (has links)
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in human-robot interaction (HRI), with the aim to enable robots to naturally interact and communicate with humans. Natural interaction implies that robots not only need to understand speech and non-verbal communication cues such as body gesture, gaze, or facial expressions, but they also need to understand the dynamics of the social interplay, e.g., find people in the environment, distinguish between different people, track them through the physical space, parse their actions and activity, estimate their engagement, identify who is speaking, who speaks to whom, etc. All these necessitate the robots to have multimodal perception skills to meaningfully detect and integrate information from their multiple sensory channels. In this thesis, we focus on the robot's audio-visual sensory inputs consisting of the (multiple) microphones and video cameras. Among the different addressable perception tasks, in this thesis we explore three, namely; (P1) multiple speakers localization, (P2) multiple-person location tracking, and (P3) speaker diarization. The majority of existing works in signal processing and computer vision address these problems by utilizing audio signals alone, or visual information only. However, in this thesis, we plan to address them via fusion of the audio and visual information gathered by two microphones and one video camera. Our goal is to exploit the complimentary nature of the audio and visual modalities with a hope of attaining significant improvements on robustness and performance over systems that use a single modality. Moreover, the three problems are addressed considering challenging HRI scenarios such as, eg a robot engaged in a multi-party interaction with varying number of participants, which may speak at the same time as well as may move around the scene and turn their heads/faces towards the other participants rather than facing the robot.

Development of Hardware and Software for a Game-like Wireless Spatial Sound Distribution System

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Several music players have evolved in multi-dimensional and surround sound systems. The audio players are implemented as software applications for different audio hardware systems. Digital formats and wireless networks allow for audio content to be readily accessible on smart networked devices. Therefore, different audio output platforms ranging from multispeaker high-end surround systems to single unit Bluetooth speakers have been developed. A large body of research has been carried out in audio processing, beamforming, sound fields etc. and new formats are developed to create realistic audio experiences. An emerging trend is seen towards high definition AV systems, virtual reality gears as well as gaming applications with multidimensional audio. Next generation media technology is concentrating around Virtual reality experience and devices. It has applications not only in gaming but all other fields including medical, entertainment, engineering, and education. All such systems also require realistic audio corresponding with the visuals. In the project presented in this thesis, a new portable audio hardware system is designed and developed along with a dedicated mobile android application to render immersive surround sound experiences with real-time audio effects. The tablet and mobile phone allow the user to control or “play” with sound directionality and implement various audio effects including sound rotation, spatialization, and other immersive experiences. The thesis describes the hardware and software design, provides the theory of the sound effects, and presents demonstrations of the sound application that was created. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Electrical Engineering 2016

Vídeo-documentação : realidade, técnica, poética /

Brauer, Felippe Falek. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: Starting from the video-documentation of the Tecer Project, a living along experience with autistic called children, the present work makes a research about the history of the cinema and the art, searching for possible approaches between documentary films and artworks. The documentation had two focuses, to assist the development of the Tecer Project, and to create a film capable of modifying the image of the autistic children in the society. The research, that involves a study on the films "The Man with the Movie Camera", from Dziga Vertov, "Nanook of the North", from Robert J. Flaherty, and "Chronicle of a Summer" from Jean Rouch and Edgard Morin, tries to identify artistic aspects of the making of cinematographic documentaries. These are films witch bring a poetical elaboration of the cinematographic language, and, even being considered documentaries, they absorbed methods and typical techniques of the fictional cinema. Traditionally, the documentary film explores a relation with the reality. The development of the documentary language made possible that this relation could be clearer in the artwork, to the point of proper film maker to appear in the screen, as occurs in "Chronicle of a Summer", evidencing that the film maker modifies himself, and modifies the object that he shoots, while filming it. Having conscience of the history and methods of audio-visual production, the present work presents the film "Entre Nós", witch is the result of a five year documentation of the Tecer Project. A video-documentary that reconstructs the experience of living along with autistic children, according to the vision of the documentary film maker. / Mestre
