Influência da seção de choque na interpretação da composição de raios cósmicos ultra energéticos / Influence of cross section on the interpretation of ultra high energy cosmic rays composition

A determinação da massa de raios cósmicos ultra energéticos é uma questão em aberto devido a flutuação natural da primeira interação e o desconhecimentos da seção de choque para altas energias (E > 1017 eV). Alguns estudos (1) mostraram que modificações sistemáticas das propriedades em interações hadrônicas interfere significativamente no desenvolvimento de chuveiros atmosféricos extensos e, consequentemente, provêm diferentes interpretações para os resultados de raios cósmicos. No limite de altas energias, pode ocorrer a saturação de glúons na superfície nuclear, o que resulta no aumento da seção de choque próton-próton e próton-núcleo em relação ao modelo de Glauber. A seção de choque cresce com a energia e está relacionada com a função de distribuição de probabilidade de encontrar um centro espalhado que é maior no modelo de saturação de glúons. Neste trabalho analisamos a seção de choque próton-ar e núcleo-ar para energias acima de 1018 eV usando a hipótese da saturação de glúons (2). Implementamos a saturação de glúons no modelos de interações hadrônicas de altas energia SIBYLL e estudamos o desenvolvimento do chuveiro atmosférico extenso usando o programa CORSIKA. Comparamos os resultados com a taxa de elongação medida pelo Observatório Pierre Auger. Concluímos mostrando o efeito da saturação de glúons na interpretação na composição da massa de raios cósmicos ultra energéticos. / The determination of the composition of ultra high energy cosmic rays is an open question due to natural fluctuations of the first interaction point and unknow high energy cross sections. Some studies (1) have shown that systematic modifications in the hadronics interaction properties infer significantly in the development of extensive air showers and, consequently, provides different interpretations of cosmic ray results. In high energy limit (E > 1018eV), gluon saturation may occur in the nuclear surface region, so that the cross section proton-proton and proton-nucleus increase more rapidly with incident energy than Glauber theory. The cross section rise with energy is related to the probability distribution function of scattering centers which is larger for gluon saturation models. In this work we analyze the cross section proton-proton and proton-nucleus at energies above 1018 eV using the gluon saturation hypothesis (2). We implemented the gluon saturation physics in the SIBYLL hadronic interaction model and we studied the development of the air shower using the CORSIKA program. Different extrapolation models of high energy interaction with gluon interaction have been implemented in SIBYLL. We compared the simulation results using gluon saturation with the measured elongation rate published by the Pierre Auger Collaborations. We conclude by showing the effect of gluon saturation in the interpretation of cosmic ray by composition.

Propagação de raios cósmicos extragaláticos / Propagation of the extragalactic cosmic rays

Recentemente, o Observatório Pierre Auger tem medido espectro de energia de Raios Cósmicos Ultra Energéticos (Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays - UHECR) (E > 1019 eV) com grande acurácia. No entanto, o estudo de raios cósmicos ultra energéticos na Terra tem uma forte dependência do estudo de sua propagação no Universo. Neste trabalho, abordamos o estudo da propagação de raios cósmicos em diferentes aspectos. Núcleos em alta energia interagem com os campos de radiação no caminho da fonte à Terra. A interação mais importante é a fotodesintegração. Na primeira parte, implementamos de maneira analítica e numérica a solução da razão de fotodesintegração e fizemos uso da solução numérica em um programa de Monte Carlo. Mostramos soluções baseadas na parametrização das seções de choque por uma função Gaussiana e por uma função Lorenztiana. Comparamos nossos resultados com trabalhos prévios da literatura. O seguinte estudo mostrou que sob a hipótese de propagação quase-linear e utilizando várias distribuições de fontes no céu, a latitude do observatório: tem influência no fluxo total medido por um observatório; impõe um limite na capacidade de medida de anisotropia e tem um efeito negligenciável na medida do XMax. No terceiro estudo, um limite superior na integral do fluxo de raios gama em GeV-TeV é usado para obter um limite superior na luminosidade total de UHECR de fontes individuais. A correlação entre o limite superior na integral do fluxo de raios gama e o limite superior na luminosidade total de UHECR é estabelecida através do processo de cascatas de partículas geradas durante a propagação de raios cósmicos nos campos de radiação. / Recently, the Pierre Auger Observatory has measured the energy spectrum of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) (E > 1019 eV) with an unprecedented accuracy. However, the study of ultra-high energy cosmic rays at Earth depends on the models used to describe the propagation of the particle in the Universe. In this work, we present a study of propagation of cosmic rays on different aspects. Nucleus at this high energy interacts with the radiation fields on the way from the source to Earth. The most important interaction is the photodisintegration. In the first part, we implemented analytical, numerical and Monte Carlo simulation solutions for the photodisintegration rate. We show solutions based on parameterizations of the cross-section using Gaussian and Lorenztian functions. We compare our results with previous works. The following study shows that under the assumption of quasi-linear propagation and using several sources distributions of sky, the latitude of the observatory: has influence on the total flux measured by an observatory; imposes a limitation on the capability of measuring an anisotropic sky and has a negligible efect on the Xmax measurement. In the thirdy study, an upper limit on the integral flux of GeV-TeV gamma-rays is used to extract the upper limit on the total UHECR luminosity of individual sources. The correlation between upper limit on the integral GeV-TeV gamma-rays flux and upper limit on the UHECR luminosity is established through the cascading process that takes place during propagation of the cosmic-rays in the background radiation fields.

Análise da evolução temporal do sinal nos detectores de superfície do Observatório Pierre Auger / Analysis of the temporal evolution of the signal in surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory

Os detectores de superfície do observatório Pierre Auger são tanques repletos de água e completamente escuros com sensores fotomultiplicadores instalados na parte interna. Quando as partículas carregadas de chuveiros atmosféricos atravessam a água com velocidade acima a da luz nesse meio, geram radiação ultravioleta devido ao efeito Cherenkov. Os sensores fotomultiplicadores desses detectores medem e convertem essa radiação em sinais elétricos que são enviados para a central de dados, registrando assim um evento. Alguns eventos apresentam comportamento incomum, caracterizado por apresentar mais de uma estrutura na série temporal, coincidentes em pelo menos dois detectores de superfície distantes. Esse trabalho se dedicou a investigar sobre as características e origens desses eventos. Devido ao grande número de dados registrados pelo Observatório Pierre Auger, foi preciso desenvolver uma ferramenta computacional para reconhecer e selecionar aqueles eventos que apresentam as estruturas desejadas de forma automática. Após, esse filtro, tentamos determinar um padrão buscando semelhanças ou tendências em variáveis dos chuveiros, como a energia e a direção de chegada. Em segunda análise olhamos para os eventos híbridos, chuveiros observados pelos detectores de superfície e pelos telescópios de fluorescência simultaneamente, de modo a analisar o desenvolvimento longitudinal do chuveiro. Na sequência, foram realizado algumas simulações de chuveiros para alguns dos eventos selecionados com o algoritmo desenvolvido. Esses eventos foram então reconstituídos, simulando uma detecção pelo observatório, com o intuito de determinar se a origem desse sinal anômalo está relacionada a uma resposta dos detectores. O último passo, foi analisar a razão entre a proporção de eventos selecionados e o número total de eventos observados em função da energia da partícula primária, o que revelou uma relação entre essas duas grandezas. / The surface detectors of Pierre Auger observatory are water filled tanks and completely dark with photomultiplier sensors installed indoors. When charged particles of air showers cross the water with velocities above that of light in this medium, ultraviolet radiation is generated due to the Cherenkov effect. The photomultiplier sensors of these detectors measure and convert this radiation into electrical signals that are sent to the data center, thus recording an event. Some events have unusual behavior, characterized by having more than one structure in its time series, coincident in at least two distant surface detectors. This work was dedicated to investigate the characteristics and origins of these events. Due to the large amount of data recorded by the Pierre Auger Observatory it was necessary to develop a computational tool to automatically recognize and select those events that present the desired structure type. After applying this filter, we tried to determine a pattern by looking for similarities or trends in air-shower variables, such as energy and direction of arrival. In a second analysis, we looked at the hybrid events, air showers observed by the surface detectors and the fluorescence telescopes simultaneously, in order to analyze the longitudinal development of air shower. In the sequence, we performed some simulations of air showers for some events selected with the developed algorithm. These events were then reconstituted, simulating a detection by the observatory for the purpose of determinin if the origin of this anomalous signal is related to a response of the detectors. The last step was to analyze the ratio between the proportion of selected events and the total number of events observed as a function of the energy of the primary particle, which revealed a relation between these two quantities.

Different approaches to determine the composition of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays in the Pierre Auger Observatory / Différentes approches de la détermination de la masse des rayons cosmiques d'ultra haute énergie faite à l'Observatoire Pierre Auger

L’objectif de cette thèse est d’améliorer la détermination de la masse des rayons cosmiques d’ultra haute énergie faite à l’Observatoire Pierre Auger. Aujourd’hui cette mesure est faite à travers l’utilisation de télescopes à fluorescence qui nécessitent des conditions de luminosité spéciales réduisantle cycle utile à environ 10%. Trois approches différentes sont proposées:La première approche est une nouvelle analyse. Les muons issus des gerbes horizontales sont déviés par le champ magnétique terrestre. Cette déviation modifie l’empreinte au sol des gerbes atmosphériques et est fonction de la longueur de parcours des muons. Un estimateur de Xμmax, leur point de productionmaximum, qui dépend de la masse du primaire peut être construit.La deuxième approche explore la détection du rayonnement radio émis par les gerbes atmosphériques, une technique similaire à la fluorescence mais sans limitation du cycle utile. La détection du rayonnement de Bremsstrahlung moléculaire est revue et explorée de différentes manières.La troisième approche propose un nouveau type de détecteur pour le réseau de surface, ces détecteurs ayant une réponse distincte aux différentes composantes des gerbes atmosphériques : électromagnétique et muonique. La mesure de la composante muonique est aussi un moyen d’accéder à la nature du primaire.La nouvelle analyse semble un outil prometteur qui peut s’appliquer à tout lot de données. La radio-détection en revanche n’apparaît pas comme une alternative compétitive face aux techniques traditionnelles. Le nouveau détecteur offre de belles perspectives et devrait être considéré pour l'équipementdes futurs observatoires. / The motivation of this PhD thesis is to improve the capabilities to determine the mass composition of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays in the Pierre Auger Observatory. The measure of their mass composition is done with the fluorescence technique, that needs special luminosity conditions that reduce the exposure time to about 10% of the time. Three different approaches are proposed.The first approach is a new analysis. Muons in the horizontal showers are deviated by the magnetic field of the Earth. This deflection is related with different characteristics of the extensive air shower that allow the construction of an estimator to obtain an alternative measure of Xμmax, an observable sensitive to the mass of the primary.The second approach is to explore the detection of the radio emission produced in the extensive air showers, a technique similar to the fluorescente one, but without the limitations in the duty cycle. The detection of the Molecular Bremsstrahlung Radiation emission is revised and investigated from different points of view.The third approach is to propose a new surface detector that obtains different responses to the different components of the extensive air shower: electromagnetic and muonic. The access to the muonic component is another way to access to the composition of the primary particle.The new method of analysis proposed appears as a promising tool to be applied in any data set. The technique of the radio detection did not show clear indications of being an alternative to traditional techniques. The new detector represents a promising alternative to be considered in any future ultra-high energy cosmic rays experiment.

A degradação de energia no espectro primário da radiação cósmica que chega ao topo da atmosfera terrestre é então analisada para diferentes redshifts das fontes injetoras. São utilizadas simulações de Monte Carlo bem como uma abordagem analítica, com a posterior comparação dos resultados obtidos em cada método. Uma vez conhecido o fluxo propagado, é feita uma estimativa da forma da resolução de energia do Observatório Pierre Auger, com a decorrente convolução desta resolução com o fluxo propagado, novamente utilizando-se ambos os métodos. Os resultados mostram que o corte GZK pode se mostrar severamente atenuado no fluxo convoluído, o que dificulta a sua constatação experimental / Abstract: In this work, we study the propagation of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) which are injected into the intergalactic medium by sources with flat spatial distribution for several redshifts. The energy spectrum of UHECR observed on the Earth is directly influenced by the energy losses due to both the adiabatic expansion of the universe and interactions with the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (e-e+ pair production and photoproduction of pions), which cause the so-called Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff. We perform Monte Carlo simulations and also consider a semi-analytical approach and compare the results obtained by each method. Once the propagated primary flux is known, we make a simple estimate of the shape of the Pierre Auger Observatory energy resolution. This resolution is folded with the propagated primary flux again utilizing both methods. Como modelo de interações hadrônicas usou-se o EPOS LHC, QGSJET 01c, QGSJET II-4 e SIBYLL 2,1. As colisões p-p foram simuladas com energia igual a 7 TeV no referencial centro de momenta e foi estudada a distribuição de multiplicidade de hádrons carregados e a densidade em pseudorapidez. Comparando estes observáveis com dados do CMS escolheu-se os modelos que melhor reproduzissem os dados para posteriormente, simular chuveiros atmosféricos extensos. Estes chuveiros foram gerados com partícula primária de energia igual a 1019eV no referencial do laboratório. Observou-se a densidade de múons na altitude do Detetor de Superfície do Observatório de raios cósmicos Pierre Auger. O objetivo é estudar a possibilidade de usar esta densidade para sondar modelos de interações hadrônicas e identificar a partícula primária dos eventos detetados pelo Observatório Pierre Auger / Abstract: In this work CORSIKA program was used to generate events from proton-proton collision and extensive air showers with primary particle being proton or iron. The hadronic interaction models used was EPOS LHC, QGSJET 01c, QGSJET II-4 and SIBYLL 2,1. The p-p collisions were simulated with energy equal to 7 TeV in the center of momenta reference system and the charged hadron multiplicity and the pseudorapidity density was studied. Comparing this with data collected by the CMS detector at the LHC it was chosen the best models to generate air showers. The extensive air showers were generated with primary particle energy equal to 1019 eV in the laboratory frame. It was observed the muon density in the altitude of the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Studium interakcí částic kosmického záření při extrémně vysokých energiích / Study of Interactions of Cosmic Rays at Ultra-high Energies

This thesis is dedicated to study of interactions of utra-high energy cosmic rays using measured data from the Pierre Auger Observatory, automatic alarm system called Shift Guard and analysis of correlation of temperature and detector response. The Pierre Auger Observatory is the largest experiment to study ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The assumed relation between temperature and fluorescence detector response is studied together with descriptive temperature analysis, which shows that the air-conditioning system is not able to stabilize temperature enough. The temperature influence on camera response is investigated in order to measure the calibration correction factor. Shift Guard - the alarm system dedicated to protect fluorescence detectors and data taking is introduced and its functionality is described. The alarm system informs shifters about some events and situations that can endanger detector or deteriorate data quality. The basic parameters and alarm system logic are described together with light and sound signals. The discrepancy between measured and predicted number of muons at ground level calculated by EAS generators is showed and possible sources of this disagree- ment are studied. Cellular radiotoxicity of iodine-123

Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Auger electron emitter iodine-123 was examined in the form of 4- [12311iodoantipyrineand as [12311Nal for its effectiveness in killing cells of different sensitivity to photon irradiation. Micronucleus assays showed that 4- [12311iodoantipyrineis two to three times more effective in cell inactivation than C2311Nai.This can be attributed to the fact that antipyrine, for reason of its lipid solubility, can enter cells and can reach the cell nucleus, whereas C231]Nai is excluded from the cytoplasm. The differential targeting of intra- and extracellular compartments was confirmed by radionuclide uptake experiments. In the nucleus, Auger decay conceivably is located on the DNA where it may invoke high-LET irradiation damage. Irradiation damage by [12311Naisl by long range y-irradiation and hence low-LET. Results of the present study demonstrate however that the enhancement of MN-frequency seen with 4-[123I]iodoantipyrine over [12311Nalis similar for all cell lines and that the narrowing of MN-response expected for 4- [12311iodoantipyrinedoes not occur. Experiments with the free radical scavenger, DMSO, indicated nearly identical dose reduction factors for both iodine-123 carriers. These two observations strongly suggest that the cell inactivation by 4- [12311iodoantipyrine is not by high-LET direct ionisation of DNA, but due to an indirect effect. The indirect radiation effect of Auger decay in the nucleus is attributed to shielding of DNA by histones. Such a protection mechanism is not unrealistic if it is realised that histones and DNA associate in a 1: 1 weight ratio and that higher order folding of the nucleosome chain into solenoids, loops, and chromatids generates considerable protein density. In the nucleosome core, the histone acta mer measures 7 nm and closely approximates the 10 nm dimention of the Auger electron range. It is suggested that the interlacing of protein density with DNA density suppresses direct ionisation from Auger decay at the DNA and directs the majority of Auger decay to the histones. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Auger-elektron-uitstraler, jodium-123, is ondersoek in die vorm van 4- [123l]jodoantipirien en [12311Nal om die effektiwiteit te bepaal waarmee dit selle met verskillende grade van sensitiwiteit vir fotonbestraling doodmaak.
