Social Change and Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique: A Study of the Charismatic Author-Leader

Morgan, Joanne January 2002 (has links)
In this thesis I explore the significance of the publication of Betty Friedans The Feminine Mystique (1963) to the emergence of the second wave Womens Liberation Movement in the US in the late 1960s. To this end, I deploy key concepts provided through social movement theory (eg collective identity, collective action frames, social problem construction). I also incorporate Max Weber and Antonio Gramscis insights on the indispensable role played by leaders who demonstrate a clear and effective political will. Webers three part model of pure charisma is used as a general template for understanding the impact of Friedans text. I critique aspects of Webers theory of charisma, in particular his failure to appreciate that the written word can mark the initial emergence phase of charisma rather than its routinisation. I augment Webers insights on charismatic leadership by attending to Gramscis emphasis on the necessity of winning the war of ideas that must be waged at the level of civil society within advanced capitalist societies. I examine Gramscis understanding of the power available to the organic intellectual who is aligned with the interests of subaltern groups and who succeeds in revealing the hegemonic commitments of accepted common sense. In the latter part of this thesis, I apply these many useful concepts to my case study analysis of Betty Friedans The Feminine Mystique. I argue that Friedans accessible, middlebrow text gave birth to a new discursive politics which was critically important not only for older women, but for a younger generation of more radicalised women. I emphasise how Friedans text mounted a concerted attack on the discursive construction of femininity under patriarchal capitalism. I question Friedans diagnostic claim that the problems American women faced were adequately captured by the terminology of the trapped housewife syndrome. I conclude by arguing that social movement researchers have to date failed to appreciate the leadership potential of the charismatic author-leader who succeeds in addressing and offering a solution to a pressing social problem through the medium of a best-selling, middlebrow text.

Baroko, rekatolizace a reformace v novějším českém dějepisectví : (narativistická interpretace) / Narativistic interpretation of selected historical works about the 17th and 18th century in Bohemia

Feuereis, Eduard January 2010 (has links)
The main topic of the thesis is the monitoring and analysis of narrative structures of historical works based on the basic assumption that a historical text is in some respect a prosaic work. It means that formal structure of historical text can be seen as poetic and, therefore, at least in part, subject to laws creating fictional literature. The main theoretical framework of this thesis is narrativistic work of H. White, which provides tools to analyze the poetic structure of historical text. In addition to the narrative structures of historical text, thesis consider role of the author (historian) of literary work - more precisely, its stylization and functions of the resulting stylization. Primary sources of thesis are Czech historical works dealing with the Baroque, re-catholicisation process and the Reformation in the Czech lands.

Pojem díla v autorském právu / The Concept of a Work in Copyright Law

Tuláček, Jan January 2020 (has links)
132 The Concept of a Work in Copyright Law Abstract The theme of the work is the author's creation , it's concept in the legal definition and further in the meta-legal sense,ie as defined by the authors's work of art,on the one hand by artists ,on the other by artistic institutions . And, the related delimitation of this concept,it's limits or extensions. On the one hand ,the concept of an author's work seems to be expanding in practice,on the other hand, it narrows,as i will explain. This means that I must first take a closer look at the concept of a work in the sense of copyright law.It is a central concept of the entire copyright law, however ,and perhaps because of this, its definition under this law is very vague. After the introduction ,where I tried to think about the definition and practical possibilities of legal science ,in the 1 Chapter I deal with the legal definition of the concept of the work in general and then the concept of the author's work. I think its legal definition, to a certain extent, revolves around a circle, the author 's work is the result of the author's creative activity and the author is the person creating the author's work. It doesn't make much sense.and historically However, this corresponds to the definition according to the authors convention and historically the definition is...

Can spectators become co-authors in the process of a story narrative

Enning, Tang January 2009 (has links)
This project explores the areas of human perception and story narrative in moving images. Engaged by the research question, “Can spectators become co-authors in the process of a story narrative?”, the research focuses on exploring the co-existence and contradiction between the values of spectators and an author in a process of a narrative by developing a new potential narrative approach with multiple perspectives. I hypothesise that spectators could participate with the story narrative process as co-authors. My key method is to engage with spectators’ participation within a narration (story) by displaying story fragments across multiple screens simultaneously. The potential of having a story spread across multiple screens might bring further interest to authors to re-think the notion of a spectator and tell a story with multiple perspectives in a narrative process with spectators. In order to develop this project, I will use different approaches, such as Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1998), Data Visualisation (Tufte, 1983), Action Research (Kemmis & McTaggart, 1988) and Heuristics (Moustakas, 1990), which I will explain in further details in each chapter of my exegesis.

Karel Hynek Mácha na střední škole / Karel Hynek Mácha: The Image of the Author at the Secondary School Level Textbooks

Chromý, Jan January 2015 (has links)
The poet Karel Hynek Mácha belongs to one of the classic writers of the Czech literature. That is the reason why this personage and his work play an important role in the teaching of literature at secondary schools. This diploma thesis analyses an important element of teaching practice. It focuses on Mácha from the point of view of literature textbooks. On the basis of synchronous comparison of these textbooks, we can find out the striking similarity since all the texts choose the same events of Mácha's life. He is appraised nearly with the same terms. The texts create an image of Mácha, the image of the author, which as a significant paratext highly influences the way new texts and other didactic materials are created and literature taught. This diploma thesis is from its bigger part a casual study bringing a detailed analysis of the contemporary image of Karel Hynek Mácha in the literature textbooks. Moreover, it offers a look at its diachronous perspective as well. The key theoretical concept of this thesis is the term image of the author which has not been a fixed part of literary criticism terminology. That is why it is widely described in the first chapter together with its relations to other concepts about the author. Keywords author, the image of the author, Karel Hynek Mácha, literature...

Från skam till självaktning : En tematisk läsning av judisk identitet i Jascha Golowanjuks Främmande fågel

Haas Forsling, Jessica January 2020 (has links)
This essay offers a thematic analysis focusing specifically on antisemitic motifs, in Jascha Golowanjuk’s novel Främmande fågel (1944). The Jewish identity of the protagonist is analyzed as a parallel development to his other identity processes, in which his artistry as a violinist is especially emphasized. This analysis is mainly achieved by using Jean-Paul Sartre’s theory of the anti-Semitic Jew, as well as Frantz Fanon’s writings about racism. By reason of the insufficient previous research on Jascha Golowanjuk, a brief introduction to the author and his Swedish authorship is provided, along with its reception during the 1930s and 40s. I argue that the protagonist’s development of a Jewish identity is essential to his artistry. Finally, this essay explores the contrast between the discussion of Jewish identity within Golowanjuk´s novels, and the complete disregard the literary establishment had for this very same discussion.

Řeč obrazů (Obraz autora jako paratext v perspektivě kulturního transferu) / The Language of Images (The Image of an Author as a Paratextual Phenomenon in Cultural Transfer)

Králíková, Andrea January 2014 (has links)
This PhD. Thesis "The Language of Images (The Image of an Author as a Paratextual Phenomenon in Cultural Transfer)" deals with the teoretical questions of the notion "The Image of an Author" and the way the term is constituted and its conections to a specific cultural space in the frame of cultural transfer. The Image of the Author is interpreted as a paratextual phenomenon which is on the one hand created through review acceptance and medial discurs in the cultural space, and on the other hand has influence on the way the text is accepted by the reader. The question of the image of an author is approached in the context of other paratextual elements, paratexts are from our point of view read as cultural (semantic) units, which participace on semiotic space of culture. The first three chapters form the teoretical basis of the thesis and focus on the theme of cultural transfer and paratexts. The core of the thesis is in its second part which presents four case studies about four different author's types in contemporary Czech literature (Jáchym Topol, Petra Hůlová, Jaroslav Rudiš, Miloš Urban). Each case study analyses the main points of their reception, the speech of the medial discourse and the way of their presentation and self-presentation. A comparison with distinc attributes of reception in...

Terapia ocupacional e grupos: em busca de espaços de subjetivação / not informed by the author

Samea, Marisa 13 August 2002 (has links)
The present project focus on an occupational therapy group in order to study a group process in the rehabilitation field in terms of the relationship between the participants subjectivity and their social space. It is our aim to consider the possibility of making the occupational therapy group a space to build new life project for the participants, taking into account their limitations - physical, psychic, social and institutional -and their potentialities. This discussion is supported by a seven-month study carried out at Estação Especial da Lapa in an Occupational Therapy group formed by disabled or psychically disturbed people. Activities were developed inside the institution as well as in social environments outside. The group process analysis was based on E. Pichon-Rivières theoretical reference (although the group work followed the Occupational Therapy procedures) combined with the knowledge obtained in the occupational therapy practice. According to the Pichonian reference, the institutional aspects take part in the process, therefore, the group reading includes the institutional context issues. Considering the disability and mental health fields, we discuss the possibility of a more intensive interchange of knowledge between these two areas in order to make the group a device for the rehabilitation investigation and intervention. The Occupational Therapy group approach is analyzed in terms of its condition to promote the manifestation of contents related to subjective and inter-subjective history and in terms of its formation and the its possibility of acquiring a new meaning. Based on the manifested contents and the group process analysis, the effectiveness of this device as well as its prospects to provide new practical and theoretical basis were studied
