"Who's the boss?" : A reassessment of gender inequality in workplace authority in the Swedish public and private sector.Wadman, Clara January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine potential gender inequality in authority positions in the Swedish labour market. In addition, this thesis intends to explore whether there is a difference in gender inequality between the public and the private sector. The results show that women have poorer advancement opportunities compared to men. Men have significantly higher probabilities of holding managerial positions and this is valid in both sectors of the Swedish economy. The outcome cannot be explained by family-related factors, or by gender differences in work motivation. Moreover, despite public sector bureaucracy implying more extensive regulations with the intent to equalize recruitments and promotions on factors such as gender and ethnicity; women have greater chances of holding managerial positions in the private sector compared to the public sector. For men, the sector of employment is not related to differences in workplace authority. Women’s greater disadvantage in the public sector compared to the private is primarily due to the large concentration of female-dominated occupations in the former sector, which limit career opportunities substantially for women. In fact, when controlling for the share of women working in the profession there is no longer a significant advantage in terms of workplace authority for women in the private sector compared to the public sector. This thesis argues that public sector formalized regulations, as regards recruitment and promotion, are not able to attenuate the negative effects for women due to the substantial share of female-dominated occupations within this sector.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Coverage Estimates Among Adolescent Females within the Delta Regional Authority Using National Immunization Survey Teen (NIS-Teen) 2008 - 2012.Yankey, David 09 January 2015 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Since 2006, the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended routine vaccination of adolescent girls at ages 11 or 12 years with 3 doses of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. Cervical cancer disparities exist for several populations in the United States. The topic is scantly documented in scholarly literature with modest knowledge of the uptake of the HPV vaccine in the Delta region.
AIM: To examine the HPV vaccination coverage estimates in the counties and parishes that comprise the Delta Regional Authority (DRA) and compare with other non-DRA counties or parishes and the rest of US. This will provide vaccination coverage estimates for adolescent females in the DRA designated Delta region that will provide public health professionals with data for policy and programmatic decision-making.
METHODS: We combined data from multiple survey years (2008-2012) from the National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen). We conducted bivariate analyses to describe the distribution across selected socio-demographic characteristics and multivariable logistic regression models to produce adjusted prevalence ratios.
RESULTS: Teens in the DRA had lower HPV vaccine initiation and completion rates compared to Non- DRA counties or parishes and the Rest of the US. The 3-dose HPV vaccination series completion rate among those who had initiated HPV vaccination and had 24 weeks between their first dose and the NIS interview date was 60.9% (95% CI: 55.8 – 65.8) among adolescent females in the DRA compared to 66.9 (95% CI: 63.7-70.0) of adolescent females in the Non-DRA counties and 67.6% (95% CI: 66.2-69.0) in the rest of the US.
CONCLUSION: The low HPV vaccination coverage among adolescents in the DRA showed that it is important to implement additional strategies to increase HPV vaccination coverage that will prevent cancers associated with HPV in the DELTA Region. Stronger provider recommendations and awareness are important for increasing HPV vaccine uptake.

Nurse satisfaction with delegation to assistive personnel : a descriptive studyChapin, Phyllis A. January 1999 (has links)
Restructuring of health care has become widespread in hospitals across the United States. The emphasis on reducing healthcare costs has forced many organizations to redesign the roles and responsibilities of care givers. The American Hospital Association (1990) reported that 97% of hospitals were using unlicensed assistive personnel for care.The purpose of the study was to determine if registered nurses in central Indiana were utilizing delegation in the workplace and to determine if the use of unlicensed personnel affected nurse satisfaction with work. The theoretical framework was General Systems Theory.The population (N=292) was registered nurses working with unlicensed assistive personnel in a four-hospital network. The number of participants was 66 (23%). The questionnaire, who Helps You with Your Work?, was utilized. Participation was strictly voluntary and the identity of the participants was kept confidential.Data revealed that 95% of nurses who responded were utilizing unlicensed assistive personnel in the workplace. Delegation of certain tasks, such as bed making, weighing of delegation and the personnel should be broadened patients, and measuring and recording intake and output, was occurring. Nurses were not delegating more complex tasks, such as monitoring IV infusions or assisting physicians with examinations.Nurses, overall, were only slightly satisfied with work, as evidenced by a mean of 3.3 (3=neither satisfied or dissatisfied). Job satisfaction was not significantly related to utilization of unlicensed assistive personnel.Unlicensed assistive personnel were being utilized in hospitals in Central Indiana. Nurses were responsible for work delegated to unlicensed assistive personnel. Nurses should realize the importance of determining capabilities and limitations of unlicensed assistive personnel. Job satisfaction was not significantly related to utilization of unlicensed assistive personnel.Future research on the subject utilization of unlicensed assistive to include more than four hospitals. Job satisfaction needs to be measured using different staffing patterns and workload as well as the utilization of unlicensed assistive personnel. The data supported the need for further research on delegation, job satisfaction and the utilization of unlicensed assistive personnel. / School of Nursing

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (!GAD) has played a major role in
conflict resolution in the Sudan. The strength of the !GAD Peace Initiative particularly
has been its clarity in identifying the key issues at the core of the conflict in its
Declaration of Principles (DoP). From that time the Sudan People's Liberation
Movement/ Army (SPLM/A) and Government of Sudan (GoS), though later, embarked
on a path to seek a negotiated settlement to the conflict. Another achievement had been
IGAD's ability to help Sudan pool its resources that seemed to provide an answer to the
perennial power constraints that bedevil African mediators. It is without doubt that the
Machakos protocol signed in July 2002 was a breakthrough for the history of IGAD's
conflict resolution in Sudan, because of the acknowledgement, for the first time, of the
right of self-determination for the south, and the guarantee of the right to opt for self-determination through a referendum at the end of a six-year interim period. From this
time IGAD's mediators became more flexible, the Sudan peace process moved speedily
and to the highest level; and between 2002 and 2003, the substantive agreements were
signed, leading to the final agreement in 2005. At the same time, the hard-pressed role of
the United States cannot be undermined for real progress in the IGAD peace process in
Sudan. Furthermore, though IGAD faced a lot of challenges as the parties' willingness to
negotiate correlated with their military successes and failures, the organization
commitment in the peace process assisted in achieving IGAD's stated objective. Its also
worth noting that there was a lack of inclusivity in the IGAD negotiations and the
mediators at times were unable to articulate common visions of their roles and sustain
adequate attention to their intervention; however, despite several competing mediation
attempts such as the "Joint Libya-Egyptian Initiative" (JLEI), IGAD has provided the by
and large undisputed negotiation framework for the Sudan conflict since the mid-nineties.
Crucial and worthy as this achievement is that, the IGAD Initiative will engross a
continuing involvement in Sudan that would not end until the terms of the peace
agreement are fulfilled and the necessary stability is achieved, because only then would
there be confidence that peace would be secure. This objective is not realisable unless
there are significant and continuing democratic reforms; IGAD must understand that this
objective is an integral part of the peace process. Finally, IGAD's continued engagement
with the Joint IGAD Partners and the international community as a whole to provide for
support for peace building and reconstruction in Sudan is imperative. If peace is
consolidated in the South, it will demonstrate the benefits of negotiated solutions to other

This study examines the effect that divided or unified government, in the United States of America, has on the delegation of trade authority to the President. Using a qualitative analysis approach, I examine competing views and formulate an independent opinion based on the peoples’ preferences and evaluation of the principles of America’s Constitutionalism. I conclude that overemphasis on the impact of divided government is misleading because trade issues provide the primary mechanism which determines the implementation of America’s trade policies, and the principles of Constitutionalism are valuable guidelines. Blended with the discussion is the awareness of an American ethos which challenges formulation of trade agreements in an era of increased globalization.

Speaking from the inside: participation in aboriginal health planning in a regional health authorityCheema, Geeta 13 December 2005 (has links)
This case study explores participation in Aboriginal health planning as perceived by members of the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Advisory Committee of the Interior Health Authority, a regional health authority in British Columbia. By prominently featuring the voices of Committee members as recorded in personal interviews, this research identifies issues and tensions in participatory Aboriginal health planning. Document review and personal observations enrich and support the analysis.
The research findings convey that, although Committee members express a range of perceptions and beliefs about Aboriginal health planning, the Committee provides a foundation for meaningful participation. Strengthening accountability relationships and employing Aboriginal population health approaches are suggested means by which meaningful participation in Aboriginal health planning can be actualized. This study emphasizes the importance of genuine relationship building between the health authority and Aboriginal communities for achieving gains in Aboriginal health.

This study examines the changing patterns of authority both within and between the local Christian communities at the end of the second century and during the third. Amid the general tightening of Church discipline, the most significant development is the expansion and consolidation of a "monarchical" episcopate rather than the monepiseopate. A monarchical bishop is distinguished from one of the latter type by a greater control over the local congregation, a universal acceptance within his community of his position as chief teacher, having the last word on questions of orthodoxy, and the ability to act without the approval of his clergy and laity. The activities and writings of the chief Christian writers during the period under review are considered separately, and there is a section devoted to the relationships between the local Churches. The period commences as the Church begins to emerge from the crisis tfce variegated and largely heretical movement called Gnosticism inflicted upon her. Among the Gnostics, only the Valentinians and the Marcionites formed Churches, as the remainder were gathered (around their teachers) in little groups, usually compared to the philosophical schools, tut also having some similarities with the mystery religion groupings. The general aim was the acquisition of saving knowledge, and the movement was generally characterised by rigid internal divisions, a passionate subjectivity and objection to community discipline, and a belief in secret traditions. Eventually the orthodox communities rejected this entire authority pattern, although the process took longer in Alexandria, where a more refined philosophical Gnosticism exerted considerable influence on Clement, and to some extent on Origen. The organization of the Marcionites was roughly the same as that in the orthodox community at Rome around the middle of the second century, and was quickly bypassed and rejected.

The thesis describes the concept of municipality institutional structure. Historical development of local government, problems and urgent issues of local government after Ruling of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania of 24 December 2002 after which many substantial changes have taken place in the local government structure, one very significant of them being separation of representation and executive institutions and delimitation of their functions, are discussed in this thesis.
A summary of changing of institutional structure of Lithuanian municipalities during 1990-2006 is provided, three principal models applied during that period are shortly described and analyzed. New provisions of Law on Local Self-Government and Law on Public Service are compared. Analyzed problems in local government are related with status of director of administration, mayor, member of municipality board, establishment of municipality institutions and enterprises, right of the public servants to work in another positions.
Procedure of direct elections of mayor, internal organizational structure of municipalities and other legal aspects of organization of their activity are analyzed, and some problems of legal regulation of activity of these institutions are overviewed.

“Every Atom of Me and Every Atom of You”: Relationships Between Authority, Family, and Gender in His Dark Materials and Paradise LostHale, Talia Joy 11 May 2012 (has links)
This thesis project examines Philip Pullman’s controversial trilogy, His Dark Materials (1995-2000), and its relationships in theme and content to John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667). Though Pullman has publicly discussed the influences of Paradise Lost on his trilogy, very little academic work has been published examining the similarities and differences between the two. Specifically, I analyze the paradigms of gender, family, and authority as they are represented by each text. I contrast Pullman's Lyra to Milton's Eve, drawing conclusions about the inherent meanings and differences in the two female protagonists and, consequently, the narrative worlds surrounding them. References cited include works examining His Dark Materials, Paradise Lost, and children's literature.

Manifestation of Religious Authority on the Internet: Presentation of Twelver Shiite Authority in the Persian BlogosphereValibeigi, Narges January 2012 (has links)
Cyberspace has diversified and pluralized people’s daily experiences of religion in unprecedented ways. By studying several websites and weblogs that have a religious orientation, different layers of religious authority including “religious hierarchy, structures, ideology, and sources” (Campbell, 2009) can be identified. Also, using Weber’s definition of the three types of authority, “rational-legal, traditional, and charismatic” (1968), the specific type of authority that is being presented on blogosphere can be recognized.
The Internet presents a level of liberty for the discussion of sensitive topics in any kind of religious cyberspace, specifically the Islamic one. In this way, the Internet is expanding the number and range of Muslim voices, which may pose problems for traditional forms of religious authority or may suggest new forms of authority in the Islamic world. The interaction between the Internet and religion is often perceived as contradictory, especially when it is religion at its most conservative practice. While the international and national applications of the Internet have increased vastly, local religious communities, especially fundamentalists, perceived this new technology as a threat to their local cultures and practices.
If we look at the Internet as a central phenomenon of contemporary modernity that interacts with practiced fundamentalist religious traditions, we can ask how broad the interactions are between religious fundamentalism and the Internet and whether these relations can be reconciled. More specifically, this thesis presents a study of the junction of the Internet and religious fundamentalism reviewing the presentation of Shiite religious authority on the Persian blogosphere.
As a case study, Persian weblogs are studied for content analysis for this thesis. Weblogs’ texts are analyzed to find evidences for Shiite beliefs and shared identity, usages and interpretations of the main Shiite religious texts, references to the role of recognized Shiite leaders, and descriptions of Shiite structural patterns of practices and organizations.
This research will demonstrate how the Internet has been culturally constructed, modified, and adapted to the Iranian community’s needs and how the Shiite fundamentalist community of Iran has been affected by it. Based on one of the most structured research in this area, the study by Baezilai-Nahon and Barzilai (2005), in this article I identify four principal dimensions of religious fundamentalism as they interact with the Internet: hierarchy, patriarchy, discipline, and seclusion.
