The focus of this project is to examine current tuba and euphonium applied lessons syllabi and to create a New Orleans brass band curriculum supplement to enhance those existing courses. Through the addition of new method books, exercises, historical texts and articles, listening assignments, and performing experiences, collegiate tuba and euphonium students will be able to apply the knowledge gained in core academic music courses, such as music theory and music history, to mastering a new style of music. Emphasis has been placed on learning chord progressions, stylizations, and how to improvise and walk a bass line.

Power Factor Improvement and Thermal Conductivity Reduction -by Band Engineering and Modulation-doping in NanocompositesYu, Bo January 2012 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Zhifeng Ren / Thermoelectrics, as one promising approach for solid-state energy conversion between heat and electricity, is becoming increasingly important within the last a couple of decades as the availability and negative environmental impact of fossil fuels draw increasing attention. Therefore, various thermoelectric materials in a wide working temperature range from room temperature to 1000 degrees Celsius for power generation or below zero for cooling applications have been intensively studied. In general, the efficiency of thermoelectric devices relies on the dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT) of the material, defined as ZT=(S<super>2</sup>σ)T/κ, where S is the Seebeck coefficient, [sigma] the electrical conductivity, [kappa] the thermal conductivity (sum of the electronic part, the lattice part, and the bipolar contribution at high temperature region), and T the absolute temperature during operation. Techniques to measure those individual parameters will be discussed in the 2nd chapter while the 1st chapter mainly covers the fundamental theory of thermoelectrics. Recently, the idea of using various nanostructured materials to further improve the ZT of conventional thermoelectric materials has led to a renewed interest. Among these types of nanostructured materials, nanocomposites which mainly denote for the nano-grained bulk materials or materials with nano-sized inclusions are the major focus of our study. For nanocomposites, the enhancement in ZT mainly comes from the low lattice thermal conductivity due to the suppressed phonon transport by those interfaces or structure features in the nanometer scale without deteriorating the electron transport. In the last few years, we have successfully demonstrated in several materials systems (Bismuth Telluride, Skutterudites, Silicon Germanium) that ball milling followed by hot pressing is an effective way for preparing large quantities of those nanocomposite thermoelectric materials with high ZT values in the bulk form. Therefore, in the 3rd part of this thesis, I will talk about how I applied the same technique to the Thalllium (Tl) doped Lead Telluride (PbTe) which was reported for an improved Seebeck coefficient due to the creation of resonant states near the Fermi level, leading to a high ZT of about 1.5 at around 500 degrees Celsius. I showed that comparing with conventional tedious, energy consuming melting method, our fabrication process could produce such material with competing thermoelectric performance, but much simpler and more energy effective. Potential problems and perspectives for the future study are also discussed. The 4th chapter of my thesis deals with the challenge that in addition to those nanostructuring routes that mainly reduce the thermal conductivity to improve the performance, strategies to enhance the power factor (enhancing [sigma] or S or both) are also essential for the next generation of thermoelectric materials. In this part, modulation-doping which has been widely used in thin film semiconductor industry was studied in 3-D bulk thermoelectric nanocomposites to enhance the carrier mobility and therefore the electrical conductivity [sigma]. We proved in our study that by proper materials design, an improved power factor and a reduced thermal conductivity could be simultaneously obtained in the n-type SiGe nanocomposite material, which in turn gives an about 30% enhancement in the final ZT value. In order to further improve the materials performance or even apply this strategy to other materials systems, I also provided discussions at the end of chapter. In the last chapter, the structural and transport properties of a new thermoelectric compound Cu<sub>2</sub>Se was studied which was originally regarded as a superionic conductor. The [beta]-phase of such material possesses a natural superlattice-like structure, therefore resulting in a low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.4-0.5 Wm<sup>-1</sup>K<sup>-1</sup> and a high peak ZT value of ~1.6 at around 700 degrees Celsius. I also studied the phase transition behavior between the cubic [beta]-phase and the tetragonal [alpha]-phase of such material from the discontinuity of transport property curves and the change in crystal structure. In addition, I also talk about the abnormal decrease in specific heat with increasing temperature that I observed in the as-prepared Cu<sub>2</sub>Se samples. E Pluribus Unum: An Evaluation of Student Engagement and Learning in the College Marching BandHealey, David Patrick January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Karen Arnold / Student engagement has been associated with a range of desirable outcomes in the undergraduate experience (Astin, 1993, Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005) and music participation has been shown to facilitate important personal and social development among its participants (Hallam, 2010). Despite this, no study has been conducted to evaluate the potential benefits of participation in one of the largest and most visible student organizations on campus: the college marching band. The purpose of this quantitative evaluation was to determine whether marching band students express distinctive patterns of engagement within their respective communities as compared with their non-band peers. Items and scales from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) were administered to marching band members (n=1,882) at 20 participating universities with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-I football programs. Data were compared with a sample of general undergraduate (non-band) responses (n=6,095) from the same institutions provided by the NSSE Institute. Findings suggested that band students are more engaged with diverse peers along racial, ethnic, political, ideological, and religious lines (p<.01; Cohen’s d=0.26) and they are more reflective in their learning as evident in their willingness to imagine another’s perspective and reevaluate their own views (p<.01; Cohen’s d=0.19). Compared with non-band peers, marching band members indicated greater personal social responsibility on an array of vectors (p<.01; Cohen’s d=0.36) including: developing a personal code of values and ethics, understanding people of other racial and ethnic backgrounds, understanding themselves, learning effectively on their own, voting in local or national elections, contributing to the welfare of their community, and solving complex real-world problems. After controlling for a range of pre-college and co-existing variables, marching band membership remained the strongest predictor of these desirable outcomes (β=0.172, p<.01). / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. Apresentamos um estudo das características ogrnanológicas dos conjuntos com dados da nossa pesquisa de campo. Todos os conjuntos pesquisados utilizam o aerofone longitudinal, a gaita, apesar da denominação pífano também ser utilizada. Procuramos a desambiguação dos termos e tratamos das diferenças entre os aerofones transversais, pifanos, e os longitudinais, gaitas. Apresentamos 40 transcrições musicais realizadas e um estudo das característica musicais dos grupos pesquisados. Analisamos aspectos melódicos, harmônicos, formais e os gêneros musicais praticados pelas Zabumbas do sertão baiano. / Investigation of the bands called Bandas de Pífanos or Zabumbas, operating in the region of Bahia\'s countryside, near the town of Canudos. We draft the academic approaches of the subject, up to now, and present a study of the organological characteristics of the musical instruments based on our field research in the countryside of Bahia. All goups researched utilizes the longitudinal aerofone, the gaita, although the designation fife also be used. We seek the disambiguation of the terms and studied the differences between the transverse aerophones, fifes, and the longitudinal, gaitas. We also presented 40 musical transcriptions and a study of the reserched groups` musical caracteristics. Then, we anilysed the melodical, harmonical and forms aspects as well the musical genres practiced by the Zabumbas of the countryside of Bahia. We highlight our experience in field research and present a study of the characteristics of the musical band of Bendegó, from the Canudos Velho village. We analyze aspects of melodic, harmonic and cadential formula of beginning and termination of transcripts from artists in field research.

This project explores how to use band-pass filtering with a variety of filters to filter both two and three dimensional surface data. The software developed collects and makes available these filtering methods to support a larger project. It is used to automate the filtering procedure. This paper goes through the work-flow of the program, explaining how each filter was implemented. Then it demonstrates how the filters work by applying them to surface data used to test correlation between friction and roughness [Berglund and Rosen, 2009]. It also provides some explanations of the mathematical development of the filtering procedures as obtained from literature.

"Du som är man, gör vad du kan" : Maskulinitet i Hoola Bandoola Bands texterHed, Max January 2019 (has links)
Previous research shows how male and female can be reflected differently within the progressive music movement and other music genres. This research often derives from the dichotomy between women and men and analyzes how the prevailing gender order affects culture and its followers. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the progressive music movement portrays men and how these can be sorted into the masculine hierarchy. Through a hermeneutic perspective and with the help of Raewyn Connell's masculinity theory, Hoola Bandoola Band's texts are analyzed to investigate how they portray men and their social position in relation to the masculine hegemony. The study also takes a didactic perspective and in front of a discussion regarding how the music in question can be used in the subject of history at the upper secondary school. The result shows that the lyrics of the band regards men with the hegemonic, the participant, the subordinate and the marginalized masculinity. The result also shows that the most prominent categories are the hegemonic and the participatory masculinity. This is because many texts center around men who possess a dominant position and men who legitimize the prevailing hegemony. The subordinate masculinity is depicted by the men who sympathize with feminism and who want to change women's subordinate position. They can also be portrayed as homosexual men. Men who are categorized by the marginalized masculinity often relate to men who lack the influence of the prevailing hegemony and who do not legitimize the hegemony even though the possibility exists that they possess desirable attributes. Their position is clearly based on a structure that means that their class affiliation places them in a marginalized power position.

By introducing tellurium into the kesterite structure there would be an improvement in the semiconducting property of the kesterite material. This research focused on incorporating tellurium into kesterite structure in order to reduce its band-gap thereby improving its light absorption and ultimately lead to a more efficient photovoltaic effect. For a typical synthesis, kesterite nanoparticles were synthesized by anion hot injection process which involved the injection of the anion precursor comprising of sulfur, selenium and tellurium in diethylene glycol into a solution containing the cation precursor which are copper (II) chloride, Zinc chloride and tin (II) chloride which are dissolved in diethylene glycol. The synthesized nanoparticles were copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS), copper zinc tin sulfide selenide telluride (CZTSSeTe) and copper zinc tin sulfide telluride (CZTSTe). Morphological characterization of the synthesized nanoparticles was carried out by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) to obtain the shape of the surface and internal structure of the nanoparticles respectively. The micrograph obtained from HRSEM shows that all synthesized nanoparticles had a flower-like surface appearance which is a common morphology obtained for non-vacuum synthesized kesterite nanoparticles. The micrograph obtained from TEM showed that all nanoparticles were agglomerated and had a black surface covering which attributable to the solvent used during synthesis, washing and centrifugation. The internal structure of the synthesized nanoparticles was obtained through small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) plot of the shapes. The shape obtained for the nanoparticles were core shell hollow sphere for CZTS, core shell dumb-bell for CZTSSeTe and solid sphere for CZTSTe.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The continuous increase in energy consumption and decrease in fossil fuels reserves are a primary concern worldwide; especially for South Africa. Therefore, there is an urgent need for alternative energy resources that will be sustainable, and environmentally friendly in order to tackle the ecological degradation generated by the use of fossil fuels. Among many energy ‘niches’, solar energy appears to be one of the most promising and reliable for the African continent because of the constant availability of sun light. Organic conjugated polymers have been identified as suitable materials to ensure proper design and fabrication of flexible, easy to process and cost-effective solar cells. Their tendency to exhibit good semiconducting properties and their capability to absorb photons from the sunlight and convert it into electrical energy are important features that justify their use in organic photovoltaic cells. Many different polymers have been investigated as either electron donating or electron accepting materials. Among them, poly(3-hexylthiophene) is one of the best electron donor materials that have been used in organic photovoltaic cells. It is a good light absorber and its Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) energy level is suitable to allow electron transfer into an appropriate electron acceptor. On the other hand, the molecular ordering found in dendrimers attracted some interest in the field of photovoltaics as this feature can ensure a constant flow of charges. In this work, I hereby report for the first time, the chemical synthesis of a highly crystalline dendritic star copolymer generation 1 poly(propylene thiophenoimine)-co-poly(3-hexylthiophene) (G1PPT-co-P3HT) with high molecular weight and investigate its application as donating material in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics.

Exploring Flow Amongst Experienced Middle School and High School Band DirectorsRoche, Robert James January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore and identify flow characteristics in experienced middle school and high school band directors in the context of their teaching. The research was conducted using a qualitative multi-case study through the use of non-participant observations, field notes, and interviews with observational video with stimulated recall to identify the characteristics of flow in a total of five experienced middle school or high school band directors. It was apparent from the findings that every experienced middle school and high school band director experienced flow characteristics at different times while instructing their bands; conditions that facilitated and inhibited characteristics of flow as well as qualities that sustained characteristics of flow also were observed. This research may contribute to improved professional development and preparation of band directors; it may help them to recognize and achieve flow and develop good teaching practices, thereby enabling their students to reach their learning potential.

Bohumir Kryl (1875-1961): An American Musical IconJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: For those familiar with the name of Bohumir Kryl, he may be known simply as a cornetist who regularly utilized the extreme pedal register of his instrument. However, his life was much more complex than that. Born in 1875 near Prague, Kryl was trained by his father as a sculptor, and, for a brief stint in his childhood, he was a circus tumbler. Returning to his family vocation, he traveled with them to America and spent much of the 1890s sculpting the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument and busts on the English Hotel in Indianapolis, as well as the friezes adorning the Lew Wallace study in Crawfordsville, Indiana. In the late 1890s, he left sculpting to become a professional cornet soloist, touring with the bands of John Philip Sousa and Frederick Innes, among others. Kryl soon garnered the title of World’s Greatest Cornetist. He formed his own band in 1906 and continued to solo and conduct well into the 1930s, eventually becoming known as one of the five greatest bandmasters in the world. He stopped soloing in the 1930s, but continued to conduct various orchestras until the late 1940s, gaining notoriety for his women’s orchestra. He also became infamous in the way he chose to parent his two daughters. He was financially successful, spending a short time as a bank president in the 1920s and amassing a significant art collection over the span of his life. When he died in 1961, he was worth nearly $2,000,000. This document is the first comprehensive biography of the extraordinary life of Bohumir Kryl.
Many documents were reviewed in preparation for this biography, including thousands of newspaper articles, telegrams, and letters. Much of Kryl’s personal correspondence used for this study was acquired through the Redpath Chautauqua Collection, located in the University of Iowa Library in Iowa City. Because there are few secondary sources, this biography of Kryl is based on these primary sources, which were carefully organized, reviewed, and documented.
