Traduttori Traditori: The Tasks of the Creative “Traitor” and the Problematic of Translation (Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, José Martí, and Octavio Paz)January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Every act of communication, and therefore, reading, are in themselves acts of translation and interpretation, as the reader creates a mental representation or reconstruction of the text, extrapolating meaning from it. Interlinguistic translation adds another dimension to these hermeneutic processes, and in the movement through space and time, constant re-interpretation, new translations, and, often, modern theories and perspectives, can interfere with or bring clarity to the meaning of the original text, as well as add to the myth-creation of the writers themselves.
This study centers on some of the great literary figures in poetic and essayistic production in the world of Spanish-speaking letters: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, José Martí, and Octavio Paz. These figures represent not only important literary movements going from the baroque to modernismo, to the vanguardia and to the creation of the self-conscious “modern” poet, but also are among the most well known Spanish-language writers in the English-speaking world. They are all self-aware creators, who, in distinct ways, join poetry, critical essays and theory that are at once an extension of and revolve around their personal poetics, projected toward the currents of their respective epochs.
Finding problematic moments in translation theory and practice, and studying them in the context of the analysis of these great literary figures, at the same time contributes to a new understanding of translation theory itself. These ‘case studies’ expose certain key moments of existing translations, moments that later contribute to critical and interpretive dialogue in a type of hermeneutic spiral of influence. They also show the importance of translation as a contribution to cultural changes and literary movements. This ultimately aids in the understanding of the important points of contact between the many worlds occupied by these great writers and the ways in which they, and in turn, their translators, recreate the contexts in which they were produced. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2016

České překlady Johna Donna v kontextech širší překladatelské poetiky svých autorů. / The Czech translations of John Donne: a translator's poetics and its consequencesŠťastná, Zuzana January 2016 (has links)
The PhD thesis studies the translations and the overall reception of John Donneʼs poetry in the Czech literary culture. Its introduction explains the choice of the topic, outlines the structure of the text and the main question to be answered: to what extent Donne has become a significant presence in the Czech cultural context and how his work has been transplanted through translations. The first chapter gives a brief overview of the historical changes in the appreciation of Donneʼs poetry and, drawing on a range of Donnean literature, attempts to define the main features of his poetics. The second chapter traces the gradual building of an awareness of Donneʼs poetry among Czech readers through translations, translation paratexts and references in the works of Czech literary scholars. It introduces the Czech translators of Donne and discusses their motives for translating his work where these could be ascertained. The first part of Chapter 3 describes the method used in analyzing the Czech translations. It introduces the model of translation criticism presented by Antoine Berman in his analysis of French Donnean translations (Pour une critique des traductions: John Donne, 1995) and comments on its application in the study of the Czech translations. The second part sums up the findings of two...

Convenzionalità barocca e coscienza individuale nella lirica religiosa di Johann Christian Günther / Baroque conventionality and Individual Consciousness in Johann Christian Guenther's Religious PoetryBIGNOTTI, LAURA 21 February 2007 (has links)
Critical interest in the rich literary production of Johann Christian Günther has been focussing on the possibility of recognizing in his poems the first example of subjective poetry after the great rhetoric season of the 17th century. Most studies investigating the innovative value of Günther's work concentrate on his Liebeslieder or Klagelieder. The present work concentrates instead on his religious poems, and aims to demonstrate that also in his geistliche Lyrik the author is able to offer a personal, sometimes autobiographical, reading of traditional themes, despite the persistence of typical baroque elements. While his early lyrics tend to remain faithful to the scarcely original imitation of pre-existing models, his later poems show a different approach to religious material. This evolution takes the form of a personal and conscious elaboration of spiritual themes, characterized by a considerable influence of pietism. The present research examines in particular Günther's Perikopenlieder, known as Geistliche Oden uber einige Sonn- und Festtage des sogenannten Christlichen Jahres des Herrn de Sacy verfertiget, his Bibeldichtung, his Weihnachtslieder and his Bußlieder.
