Qualified or not? : A case study about integration of people with intellectual disabilities on the labor market in Recife, PE – Brazil, using the “Quota Law” as a starting point.

Jönsson, Lisa January 2013 (has links)
People with intellectual disability, as a category, are an especially disadvantage group, as they often are in need of interventions from the society throughout the whole life. In Brazil, work is considered a human right and important for the construction of the social and personal identity. There is a law, called the Quota Law, which demands all companies with 100 employees or more, to employ between 2 – 5 % people with disabilities. This law aims to ensure this social right for the target group. However, several studies are pointing at the timid result the law has provided concerning employment for people with intellectual disabilities. This study intends to detect barriers, important aspects and possible solutions in order to facilitate for people with intellectual disabilities to enter the labor market using the Quota Law as a starting point.      The study has an inductive and qualitative approach and the data is collected by semi-structured interviews. The respondents are all related to issues of people with intellectual disabilities and their integration on the labor market. Within the sample there are; persons with intellectual disabilities who have an employment on the labor market or have a desire to obtain a competitive employment; relatives to persons with intellectual disabilities; professionals working in two different non-government organizations (NGO´s) in Recife that provides vocational courses for the target group and finally; respondents working at public ministries who act in the area of integration of people with disabilities on the labor market.      The result shows that the main barriers for people with intellectual disabilities in order to reach the labor market were considered; prejudices and discrimination of persons with intellectual disability; the lack of qualification of people with intellectual disability in combination of high qualification requirements by the employers; the lack of support in order to compensate for intellectual disabilities; that the work environments are not customized for the target group and; fear of loosing the Benefit of Continuous Support of Social Assistance (BPC).      Theories of perspectives on intellectual disabilities are used to understand current interventions in order to integrate people with intellectual disabilities on the labor market. One conclusion is that there is a need for further efforts towards the target group in order to really obtain an effective integration for people with intellectual disability on the labor market.

The literature points out that a healthy lifestyle is a beneficial factor to aging, including the regular practice of physical activity. The presence of diseases can be a factor that hinders a practice of physical activity, thus becoming a barrier. Alzheimer's disease (AD) may be one of the factors that act as a barrier. Considering that in AD the practice of physical activity is reputable as non-pharmacological treatment, is it that the patients with the disease are practicing it at optimal frequency and intensity? The aim of this study was to analyze as main barriers that impede a practice of physical activity in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The present study had a cross-sectional, epidemiologically based population-based design. A total of 104 elderly people living in the urban area of the city of Rio Claro - SP, an interior and medium-sized city, were evaluated. The sampling process was performed through consultation with public and private health services that referred elderly with clinical diagnosis of AD for research. The participant with AD and their caregiver answered an interview through tests and questionnaires, which lasted approximately 45 minutes. Among the evaluation instruments used, in particular: Questionnaire on Barriers to Practice of Physical Activities (QBPAF); Supplementary Questionnaire (QC), which was prepared for a category of AD-related direct barriers; Qualitative Questionnaire (QQ) about habits of physical activity practice. Regarding the QBPAF as main barriers found in the caregiver's vision are: 1) Relying on other people to practice; 2) Do not remember to practice; and 3) Need to rest and relax without free time. As for barriers perceived by outstanding patients: 1) Already considered active enough; 2) Do not remember to practice; and 3) you do not have enough time available. The QC also pointed out as a barrier the patient was confused about the place and time of the activity and felt difficulty in engaging in activities. Regarding QQ, it was observed that most caregivers recognized the importance of practicing physical activity, which they consider to be lacking professionals capable of dealing with elderly people with AD, difficulty of availability of the caregivers themselves in attendance as demands of the patient and elderly projects with pathologies should have greater comprehensive coverage. Thus, it is concluded that among all barriers as found dependence of a caregiver can be determinant in the patient's lifestyle.

Middle school teachers' attitudes and perceptions about their role in promoting pupils' mental health in the State of Kuwait

Alradaan, Dalal January 2012 (has links)
This study explores the complexity of teachers’ attitudes towards promoting their pupils’ mental health in Kuwait middle schools, teachers’ perceptions of the contextual factors that shaped those attitudes, the barriers they identify that might hinder the implementation of the promotion process, and changes required to put such a promotion process into practice. A mixed-methodological research approach is adopted within a complementary research design, consisting of two stages. A total of 497 Kuwaiti middle school teachers completed a systematic survey and twelve teachers were subsequently chosen purposely to take part in semi-structured interviews. The study’s findings suggest that Kuwaiti middle school teachers tend to hold moderately favourable attitudes towards promoting pupils’ mental health. However, a variety of personal, interpersonal, socio-cultural, and structural-organizational barriers were perceived by teachers, which could undermine positive attitudes and impact on the implementation of promoting pupils’ mental health. The study also showed teachers’ attitudes and perceptions as markedly embedded within their socio-cultural and religious context.

Human papillomavirus: pathogenesis and barriers to prevention

Patel, Sneh Bhupendrakumar 24 July 2018 (has links)
Cervical cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the world, and human papillomavirus (HPV) is a cause of the vast majority of these patient cases. With many HPV types being oncogenic in nature, HPV as a whole is responsible for over 5% of all cancers worldwide and 15% of cancer in women in developing countries. HPV is a sexually transmitted infection that is spread through contact with infected genital skin, mucosa, or bodily fluids from a partner with acute or subclinical viral infection. While less frequent, various strains of the virus are also responsible for anal and vaginal warts, anal cancer, and cancer of the vulva and penis – these account for approximately 50,000 cases per year worldwide. Data also suggest a potential implication of HPV in oropharyngeal cancers, especially among younger adults. Various behavioral and prophylactic approaches are recommended for the prevention of HPV infection and cancer. For example, there is evidence that behavioral change can be effective, such as condom use and limitation on the number of sexual partners. Besides this, in recent years we have seen the development of various prophylactic or therapeutic vaccines that are highly effective in the prevention of HPV pathogenesis. Despite this, barriers to treatment and prevention exist, making HPV a continuing threat to individuals most at-risk across the globe. Thus, this study reviewed a large collection of current HPV and related cancer literature to understand the process of infection and pathogenesis in various human sites as well as potential barriers to prevention and treatment that may be perpetuating the survival of the virus across the world. Analyzing current and past research on such barriers, this paper delves into important variables that can affect early detection and treatment of HPV, and also explores a novel and promising therapy currently in development that could be valuable in overcoming many of these issues.

Barriers and Best Practices to the Use of Public Transportation: A Case Study of the South Baltic Sea Region

Fellner, Michael, Vierling, James, Ténart, Juliette January 2018 (has links)
Climate change is a pressing issue caused by the systematic increase of greenhouse gasses (GHG). One way to avoid higher GHG emissions is through an increased use of public transportation, transitioning society away from the personal automobile. Public transportation is more sustainable than the personal automobile as its emissions per person are less and it takes up significantly less space. Sustainability is defined through the principle-based definition of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). This research studied barriers and best practices to the use of public transportation in the South Baltic Sea Region (SBSR), in cooperation with the EU funded InterConnect Project. The research team was able to use the resources of the InterConnect Project for their methods in order to discover perceived barriers and potential best practices and ideas to overcome these barriers through the stakeholder perspective. The research team concludes that by addressing the perceived barriers, a first step towards transitioning society within the SBSR towards more sustainable transportation can be done. As transportation is complex and connected to other systems, the need for a systems perspective and a strategic and collaborative approach was identified. This could be achieved through using the FSSD in the SBSR.
