Begging for a title : an ethnographic research report on Zimbabwean blind beggars.

Katsande, Rukariro 04 September 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to examine what blind begging is; why it exists; what it means; what causes it; and how beggars operate. It explores the theme that begging has evolved in Southern Africa through the influence of colonialism linked with institutionalised religion and traditional cultural conceptions: Christian, Muslim or Buddhist that equates giving, particularly to blind beggars, to receiving some form of salvation. The underlying theme is that blind beggars fulfil a requirement in society which satisfies a hierarchal social identity and the need to discard the excess or unwanted articles to those less fortunate in the guise of blind beggars. The hypothesis can be extended to the civilized west needing to be the developed and a polar opposite undeveloped Africa to which to donate and thus discard the excess or unwanted articles to appease some moral outlook but not to extract the blind beggar or underdeveloped state from poverty. Thus, blind begging is a professional response to a perceived market need and the blind beggars have the physical infrastructure to successfully exploit this niche market and thus make a sustainable livelihood that allows them to develop a business plan that guarantees a return that allows them to invest and eventually retire. I used a parachute method where I observed where the beggars operate and approached them for a focus group discussion, then individual interviews with participants. In Johannesburg they operate differently so I approached each beggar individually. This research is important to examine some lives of marginalised disabled in our society that may be misunderstood because of stereotypical social attitudes. It serves to highlight their plight and contribute to possible solutions to social mis-conceptions and practices. Most of the people I encountered giving donations made up the panel of givers.

The Effect of Nest Acoustics on the Begging Calls of Nestling Tree Swallows

Fairhurst, Elizabeth 06 December 2010 (has links)
Animals’ long-distance acoustic signal structure minimizes habitat-specific attenuation and distortion, but it is unknown how environmental acoustics shape the signals of dependent young, or short-range signals generally. I investigated the influence of the nest environment on nestling tree swallows’ begging calls by relating nest reverberation and resonance to nest structure; relating call features to nest reverberation, resonance and structure; and testing whether call structure reduced distortion in the home nest. Reverberation was stronger in wider cavities with intact ceilings. Nestlings used shorter calls in more reverberant cavities, and longer calls with higher middle frequency and lower minimum frequency in wider cavities with smoother walls, but did not adjust call frequency in relation to resonance. Calls originally produced in a given nest did not transmit with less distortion than calls originally produced in other nests. These findings suggest that the nest environment may shape the structure of begging calls.

Romer & tiggeri : En mediestudie och intervjuer med romer i Umeå / Romani & begging

Norberg, Marie, Norgren, Emma January 2014 (has links)

Service Delivery Agents' Perceptions of the Impact of Panhandling Policy in Virginia

Brown, Nancy 01 January 2019 (has links)
Panhandling (also called begging and mendicancy) has been a problem for lawmakers. Although current crime control measures (based on the broken windows theory) have identified a perceived link between disorders (i.e., panhandling) and crime, previous attempts to ban panhandling were deemed unconstitutional. The purpose of this work was to investigate the impact of the latest attempt to curb panhandling in Hampton Roads, Virginia, known as the Public Education Campaign. This phenomenological inquiry examined the perceptions and work-related experiences of service delivery agents to explore the impact of the panhandling policy on panhandling and policy enforcement. Purposive sampling was used to recruit, interview, and record 7 service delivery agents (social workers and law enforcement officers). After the interviews were transcribed, member-checking and triangulation were used to contribute to the trustworthiness of this project. Results indicated ineffective communication and duplication of services were issues. Therefore, positive social change may result from an improved screening process for the Department of Social Services personnel. Furthermore, educating the public concerning the legality of panhandling may eliminate the duplication of services for the Housing Crisis Hotline personnel.

Att ge eller inte ge? : En studie om tänkande och agerande kring tiggeri

Jonsson, Jennifer, Sara, Gustafsson January 2015 (has links)
Begging has become a common phenomenon in Sweden, both in cities and on the countryside. This made us interested of how different people think and act around begging. Which emotions and thoughts arise within when we see people beg. The purpose of the study is to investigate how a few Swedes in different ages relate to begging. To be able to answer the purpose we broke it down into questions of what thoughts arise within the interviewed people around begging and how the interviewed people act around begging. The study has been guided by a social construction approach though we believe that begging and actions around begging is something we create and therefore also can be recreated. The theory of actions by Max Weber has been used to investigate how people act around begging. Weber uses four different types of actions; instrumental rational-, value rational-, affective-, traditional actions. The data was collected through a qualitative method with focus group discussions. Age and Swedes was chosen as common factors in the focus groups. The result of this study shows that there is a big uncertainty around begging and how people should feel and act. The conclusion is that the human act is connected to the social context in which they grow up and lives. Begging is a relatively new phenomenon in Sweden and there is still no certain knowledge about the situation or how the local authorities should work with the issue.
