The New Beginnings community development project :social capacity as prerequisite for sustainabilityLoots, Cedric 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The South African wine industry has a history of super-exploitation. Wine farm
labour practices such as paternalism, tied housing, tied employment and the tot system
have maintained farm worker communities in a trapped and dependent position.
Within these trapped farm worker communities social pathologies such as alcohol
abuse, a highly unstable family life, illegitimacy and illiteracy are common. On an
individual level, members of these communities are predominantly low in selfconfidence,
self-esteem, self-reliance etc. On a communal level, domestic violence,
child battering, drunken brawls, knife stabbings etc. are common in farm worker
communities.
In response to these conditions in wine farm worker communities, a number of
initiatives have been launched within the South African wine industry. This research
study focuses on one of these initiatives, called the New Beginnings project. As one
of the first projects of its kind, it succeeded in releasing a farm worker community
from its trapped and dependent position. This was the outcome since the project
succeeded as a community development process.
The community development process is essentially about building or increasing social
capacity. The building of social capacity refers to a process whereby both agency and
solidarity are increased within a community. Agency or capacity building has to do
with the building of values, attitudes, knowledge, skills and personal qualities, e.g.
self-esteem and self-reliance, of individual community members, while solidarity has
to do with the building of cohesion, trustful relationships and connectivity among
various community members. The New Beginnings project illustrates that
community development practice that abide by guiding principles that aim to achieve
both agency and solidarity building within a community, would eventually result in
the sustainability of the project.
Arbeidspraktyke soos paternalisme, gebonde behuising, gebonde indiensneming
‘n hoogs onstabiele gesinslewe, onwettigheid asook ongeletterdheid
algemeen voorkom in hierdie gevange plaaswerker-gemeenskappe.
gemeenskapslede.
aanleiding sal gee.

La Bibliothèque historique de Diodore de Sicile, fragments des livres VI-X : texte, traduction et commentaire / The Library of History of Diodorus of Sicily, fragments of books VI-X : text, translation and commentaryCohen-Skalli, Aude 30 November 2009 (has links)
This thesis offers a new critical edition of the second pentade of the Library of History, one of the many parts of Diodorus of Sicily’s universal history (first century B.C.), which was transmitted to us in fragments; along with this study comes a translation and a mainly historical, but also philological, linguistic and stylistic commentary. The indirect tradition, thanks to its compilation work, made the transmission of some of the text’s original parts possible; these parts go, historically, from the end of the mythological period (book VI) to the first Persian war (end of book X). It is relatively homogeneous and divided into two separate parts: on the one hand, the Excerpta Constantiniana (an Encyclopedia that Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus wrote in the Xth century) includes a large number of Diodorus’ fragments, mainly used for the moral enlightening they provide with. On the other hand, a few Christian and Byzantine authors have quoted Diodorus in their work (mainly chroniclers interested in his view on universal history). All introductory notes and other notes included in this analysis try to always link these reliquiae with their precise original and historical context, as well as with the general historiographical project of Diodorus’ work, in order to understand the method used by the Sicilian historian and to underline the specific interest of his work, putting aside its unquestionable value as a documentary, which the modern reader will certainly be able to appreciate.

Pražský Hlahol / Prague Hlahol ChoirDandová, Lenka January 2015 (has links)
The introductory chapter of this Thesis describes the development of choir music in Bohemia, starting with unison singing, through polyphonic singing, proceeding to forming of literary societies, and, finally, the form of choir singing as we know it today. In the theoretical part, we use the most important historic and social moments of the Prague Hlahol Choir to illustrate almost 155 years of its existence. The following chapter reflects the most significant concerts, introduces the choir's repertoire and how it changed through times, mentions premieres of choir masterpieces, cooperation with other significant choirs and prominent musicians. In the practical part, we reprint the interviews with long-time choir members and personal experience of some of the artists who have cooperated with the Prague Hlahol Choir. To complete this Thesis, we used anniversary almanacs, annual reports, historic documents and photographs, etc. We also included personal views of the choir members, choir leaders and the prominent musicians who have cooperated with the choir. Based on the assembled data, we can evaluate the progress the choir has made, the changes it has undergone and also the impact it has made from the day it was established. The main contribution of this Thesis is that it brings the overview of the...

[en] BEGINNINGS OF THE PSYCHE: ELEMENTS FOR THE CLINIC OF LIMIT CASES. (THE PARADOX OF THE DUAL UNIT) / [pt] PRIMÓRDIOS DO PSIQUISMO: ELEMENTOS PARA A CLÍNICA DOS CASOS-LIMITE. (O PARADOXO DA UNIDADE DUAL)CRISTIANA REGINA FERREIRA DE AGUIAR PONDE 26 May 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis aims to contribute to the discussion on the clinic of so-called borderline cases from an investigation into the intersubjective elements that constitute the beginnings of the psyche. The conductive thread consists of the paradoxical experience of dual unit, characteristic of the initial moments of relationability, and which also constitutes a starting point for analytical work with very regressed patients. To this end, this research will be divided into two thematic axes. The first axis, composed of the first two chapters, consists of an investigation into the beginnings of the psyche in sufficiently good conditions and then on environmental failures and their vicissitudes for the etiology of limit cases. The second axis refers to a discussion on the clinic of limit cases. Initially, an articulation of the main elements of early intersubjective experience with the concept of countertransference is considered. Then, the analytical work is proposed with the so-called difficult cases from a Transformational Model. This occurs within the scope of a field optician in which the non-symbolized psychic elements can be welcomed, metabolized and transformed within the analyst/analyzing dyade, considered as one of the pathways of this field.

Vyobrazení rasových a etnických stereotypů v amerických kreslených filmech / The Portrayal of Racial and Ethnical Stereotypes in American Animated CartoonsVejvodová, Iva January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the depiction of racial and ethnic stereotypes in American animated cartoons particularly from the first half of the twentieth century. It studies the relationship between animation and American culture and examines how animation reflects and shapes American identity in terms of race and how it critiques and promotes American values and attitudes regarding race and ethnicity in particular. Considering the historical, political, legal and cultural background of the contemporary eras of American animation, the thesis analyses the portrayal of racial and ethnic features in animated cartoons from the 1920s to the 1960s. Such stereotypes represent, in my opinion, significant aspects of societal and cultural changes in American society of the examined eras of animation. The beginnings of the entertainment industry affected the booming era of animation by implementing commonly recognised literary stereotypes of the African-Americans into animated cartoons. This thesis strives to study the development of animated features of the racial stereotypes throughout the contemporary eras. It provides a brief systematic overview of the main eras that have significantly highlighted the start of animation as markers of race and ethnicity. Simultaneously, it discusses the problematic...

Awakening the Calabrian Story: The Diverse Manifestations of Acquiring KnowledgeMarchese, Pina 02 March 2011 (has links)
It all began in the village. We would wake up with the sun, we would rest our laboured bodies underneath the moon. Gli vecchi (old folks) often told us: “In the end, all that will remain is our story. Nothing else really matters.” This thesis “Awakening the Calabrian Story: The Diverse Manifestations of Acquiring Knowledge” will take you into the lives of ten Southern Italian women from Calabria. They will lure you back to their villages: their place of birth, their hearth, to the midst of the olive trees. Their stories will then migrate to Canada, as these women take their first steps on Pier 21.
“In the end, all that matters is our stories.” This thesis will give voice to ten Southern Italian women who will tell the world what, to them, matters most. They will tell their tales and pass on the wisdom they have learned along the way. With each breath and each step, they are always growing, never remaining the same. They go along and live out their villages wherever the thread takes them.
This thesis itinerary will begin in the village, follow a journey across the Atlantic Ocean to a life in Canada. Chapter One: (Introduction) will outline and describe the background, purpose and objectives, on this journey of awakening. Chapter Two: (Literature Review) will look at pedagogical perspectives in curriculum theory. Chapter Three: (Methodology) will focus on the research methodology applied throughout this thesis process. Chapter Four: (Stories as Data) will lure readers into the personal lives and experiences of participants. Chapter Five: (Interpretation of Stories) will reveal the analysis of acquired knowledge as reported by participants. This thesis itinerary will continue and conclude by the fireside with a collection of Calabrian folktales told by these participants, and translated from the Calabrian dialect into English. / PhD

DIY technologie v digitálním sochařství / DIY technologies in digital sculptureVáňa, Dušan January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation thesis is focused on the search for the presence of DIY (Do It Yourself) technologies in the practice of digital sculpting, from the beginnings of this progressive way of creation to the present. The work, through three thematic areas, answers the main research questions: What kind of technology is or has the DIY phenomenon been represented in digital sculpture? How have these technologies influenced and are influencing the development and direction of digital sculpture? Within the first thematic area, the presence of the DIY phenomenon in the beginnings of digital creation of a spatial work of art is mapped until the moment of constituting the concept of Digital Sculpture, as a designation of this new way of creation. The second area deals with specific technologies of digital sculpture, in terms of technical tools and their DIY alternatives. The development of these alternative technologies and their influence on the gradual democratization of digital sculpture tools is investigated. The third area examines the creative methods of DIY, which have been integrated into the practice of digital sculpture.
