Exploring the use of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) in the healthcare sector of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia : rhetoric and reality : evaluate understanding the five perspectives of the BSC : evaluating the understanding of linkage between the BSC and strategy of the hospital : the reality of the implementation of BSC in KFSH

Al Thunaian, Saleh Abdulrahman January 2013 (has links)
This thesis aims to evaluate the implementation of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) based on a case organization; the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH-RC). The study is an exploratory investigation. Understanding BSC perspectives is important for academic comprehension and is crucial for successful implementation. BSC at KFSH-RC includes five main perspectives: Quality of Care; Medical Care; Employees; Financial; and Education and Research (learning and growth). The thesis tackles two main anecdotal, practice-based arguments: BSC helps achieve business strategy, and the implementation of BSC has often fallen short of the assertions made about its potential for impact. A case study with a triangulation approach is justified and pursued. This study contributes to the literature in different ways. The application of the BSC has received limited attention in healthcare organisations in general, and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in particular, and may be one of the first to explore such issues, across management and professional groups, to research BSC in the healthcare organisation in the KSA. It distinguishes between the understanding of financial and non-financial perspectives; and the researcher has developed a conceptual framework, which reflects the main elements of BSC implementation. Quantitative data analysis from the case study indicates that staff members at the KFSH possess only a shallow understanding of various BSC perspectives. The study revealed a consistent lack of understanding of BSC by the department employees, due to their lack of interest. The results show that performance measures following the implementation of BSC created no significant improvement. It also confirms that even some senior managers face difficulties understanding BSC perspectives. The qualitative-based findings indicate that the level of understanding of BSC for clinical services is not significantly different from that for non-clinical services; staff members of the KFSH resist the implementation of BSC in the early stages; and there is 'autocratic' leadership style at the KFSH inhibited the flow of information. The power distance and autocratic leadership style, in combination with an inadequate launch of BSC, fail to follow the implementation steps recommended by both Kaplan and Norton (2001a) and Kotter (1996). These organisational dynamics, it will be argued, are understated in the original BSC methodology, a view consistent with the findings of Woodley (2006) and may be especially so in environments with strong professional norms such as hospitals. The implications for the study and practice of non-profit organisations wishing to adopt methodology developed initially in a commercial context, is considered.

Approche CRONE multivariable : développement et application à la régulation de bancs d'essais moteur haute dynamique / CRONE multivariable approach : development and application for high dynamic test-bench control

Lamara, Abderrahim 27 May 2015 (has links)
The work presented in this Thesis is part of the CRONE (robust control with fractional integration order) multivariable methodology development. It deals with the simplification of the robust multivariable control system implementation with application to the control of high dynamic engine test-benches, including those developed by the D2T company. The first chapter introduces different kind of test-benches and gives a general idea about how those systems work while explaining their problems. While the first part of chapter II presents a simple method for test-benches modeling which then allows their simulation, the second part is dedicated to their frequency-domain system identification. The defined identification procedure is applied to a test-bench equipped with a Diesel engine. The third chapter presents the CRONE multivariable methodology and different developments to simplify its use. Reflecting these developments, the developed CRONE multivariable toolbox is used to design a control system for a test-bench consists of two asynchronous motors. The fourth chapter is dedicated to validate the presented work by applying these developments to a high dynamic test-bench with a spark ignition engine. This chapter presents the various software tools developed to simplify the implementation to D2T products of the CRONE full MIMO methodology.

Characterization of petroleum well drill cutting by instrumental analytical techniques.

Thais Bortotti Fagundes 13 April 2018 (has links)
The present research aimed at characterization of the drill cuttings of an oil well belonging to the Santos Basin, using different instrumental analytical techniques. The main focus was given to the application of X-ray diffraction as an alternative to the routinely applied mud-logging study practices, where essentially visual classifications of the lithological units of the well are carried out and generally in fine granulation samples, giving uncertainties to the descriptions. A total of 164 samples of drill cuttings were chemically analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and classified according to their mineralogical similarities using the multivariate statistical analysis of X-ray diffraction data. This feature allowed minimizing the sample set for subsequent characterization studies. The identification and quantification mineral phases present in all samples, as well as the determination of the sizes and forms of the particles by dynamic images analysis, were carried out only in representative samples of each one of the defined groups of similarities. Results were compared with the data of the geological monitoring profile (drilling data) and the interpretations carried out in the mud-logging unit by geologist, and a high correlation between these data was identified. The viability of using a bench scale diffractometers during the drilling stage of an oil well was also studied considering the feasibility study on representative samples to be applied on site (adequate pulverization time and possible sampling errors) and quality of the results obtained by different X-ray diffraction equipment (collecting conditions and resolution of spikes). The use of bench diffractometers in the study of drill cutting proved to be feasible from the operational point of view, bringing several advantages for the correct characterization of the fragments, with better accuracy in the results, decrease of the uncertainties and a very agile tool.

Large synoptic survey telescope : distorsions électrostatiques dans les ccd / Large synoptic survey telescope : electrostatic distortions in the CCD

Le Breton, Rémy 25 September 2017 (has links)
The removal of the sensor signature in the science images has been identified by the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration as a mandatory path to fullfill its scientific goals. The SAWG working group has been put together to perform this task for the collaboration. It has access to optical benches in some of the laboratories of the collaboration (UC Davis, SLAC, BNL and LPNHE) for this purpose. LSST belongs to a new category of telescopes equiped with large focal planes. For the decade that they have been equipped with thick, high resistivity Charge Coupled Devices (CCD), new effects have been identified. A particular attention is given to the understanding of the electrostatic distortions that are inherent to the CCD properties. These electrostatic distortions have an impact on science measurements. My PhD work is centered on the study of the brighter-fatter effect and the tree-rings. It has been shown that with different kind of illuminations, it was possible to accurately characterize these effects. A fringe projector has been developed on the optical bench of the LPNHE in order to produce these particular illuminations. In this document, we present : a new method, tested on simulations, to characterize the tree-rings; a new method to measure the brighter-fatter effect based on the projection of Ronchi profiles; a complete study of the different properties of the brighter-fatter effect, where we developped a simplified electrostatic model. Finally, the efficiency of a correction method, called descrambling, is evaluated.
