Beyond Budgeting : Recept eller Koncept? / Beyond Budgeting : Recipe or Concept?

Tunstad, Kristian, Dahlin, Anders January 2016 (has links)
The traditional budgeting has long been a fundamental part of running a business as a management control system. However, it has been subject of criticism for being time-consuming, costly and not dynamic, amongst other. As a result of this, new management tools have been developed, which later on has led to a discussion of leaving traditional budgeting, which has been known as “Beyond Budgeting”. This discussion questions the budget, and its impact on management and control. Since the budget is a cornerstone in organisations, further studies in this area are of interest, to achieve a greater understanding of Beyond Budgeting. Earlier studies on Beyond Budgeting have almost exclusively been focused on the demand-side, that is companies who have chosen to go Beyond Budgeting. However, there has been less focus towards the supply-side, that is operators who communicate Beyond Budgeting to potential customers. By studying the supply-side of Beyond Budgeting a greater understanding of this concept can be achieved. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to achieve a greater understanding of Beyond Budgeting, from the supply-side point of view, and to compare this with the original ideas of Beyond Budgeting. To answer this purpose, we have based our theoretical framework by illustrating Beyond Budgeting theories and how they first were brought up, but also how concepts are spread according to theory. As for methodology, we have a qualitative science approach. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews, but also observations as a supplement, to achieve a deeper picture of how Beyond Budgeting is communicated. The empirical result presents the information that was gathered from the interviews and the observations. In the analysis we discuss the empirical results in the light of the theoretical framework. Based on this, following conclusions can be made: through our study a greater understanding has been achieved in the knowledge that the communication of Beyond Budgeting needs concretisation, to ease customers adopting process. The supply-side’s communication therefore differs from the original Beyond Budgeting theories, which lies in the three processes target setting, forecasting and decision making and resource allocation. Working with these must be seen from the unique situation of any customer, and therefore Beyond Budgeting is a concept, rather than a recipe.

Anatomy of exotic Higgs decays in 2HDM

Kling, Felix, No, Jose Miguel, Su, Shufang 16 September 2016 (has links)
Large mass splittings between new scalars in two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDM) open a key avenue to search for these new states via exotic heavy Higgs decays. We discuss in detail the different search channels for these new scalars at the LHC in the presence of a sizable mass splitting, i.e. a hierarchical 2HDM scenario, taking into account the theoretical and experimental constraints. We provide benchmark planes to exploit the complementarity among these searches, analyzing their potential to probe the hierarchical 2HDM parameter space during LHC Run 2.

Graphene Devices for Beyond-CMOS Heterogeneous Integration

Darwish, Mohamed 01 September 2017 (has links)
Semiconductor manufacturing is the workhorse for a wide range of industries. It lies at the heart of consumer electronics, telecommunication equipment and medical devices. Most semiconductor electronics are made from Silicon, and are fabricated using CMOS technology. The versatility of semiconductor electronics stems from the ever-reducing cost of integrating more computing and memory functions on chip. The small cost for adding extra functions has been maintained in the past 50 years through transistor scaling. Transistor scaling focuses on shrinking the size of transistors integrated on chip. This reduction in transistor size, while keeping the overall cost of the chip fixed allowed us to reduce the cost per function with scaling, and is what is celebrated as Moore’s law. Scaling has been working gracefully up to the last decade, where the exponential rise in manufacturing cost and diminishing gains of scaling on device performance reduce its economic benefit. To revive the cost reduction trend, different techniques were proposed such as augmenting CMOS manufacturing with new materials (Beyond-CMOS), 3D integration, and integrating more non-transistor elements on-chip (More than Moore). In this work, we focus on the efficient implementation of several circuit functions using an allotropy of carbon known as graphene. Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, has unique electronic properties that has been taken the solid-state electronics community by a storm since its first experimental conception in 2004. Despite its promising electronic properties, namely the very high charge-carrier mobility and reduced scattering by impurities, graphene circuits has been held back by a plethora of nonidealities and technological roadblocks that hamper its use in traditional transistor-based circuits. In this work, we attempt to leverage the unique physical properties of graphene to implement non von-Neumann neuromorphic computing architectures, low-loss diodes and evaluate the behavior of diffusive-transport graphene couplers. We focus on the the design, fabrication and characterization of graphene devices in the presence of the current performance-limiting technological nonidealities in heterogeneous graphene-CMOS systems. We present the design, fabrication and characterization of all-graphene resistive data converters devices and diodes, discussing their performance and application as building elements of all-graphene brain-inspired computing architectures. We evaluate the performance of graphene couplers operating in the diffusive transport regime, which serve as a method to analyze the cross-coupling between adjacent graphene interconnects. We also discuss the current technological limitations hampering the performance of graphene devices, and the roles of different processing non-idealities on the characteristics of graphene devices.

Fermionic fields with mass dimension one as supersymmetric extension of the O'Raifeartaigh model

Wunderle, Kai Erik 25 November 2010
The objective of this thesis is to derive a supersymmetric Lagrangian for fermionic fields with mass dimension one and to discuss their coupling to the O'Raifeartaigh model which is the simplest model permitting supersymmetry breaking. In addition it will be shown that eigenspinors of the charge conjugation operator (ELKO) exhibit a different transformation behaviour under discrete symmetries than previously assumed.<p> The calculations confirm that ELKO spinors are not eigenspinors of the parity operator and satisfy (<i>CPT</i>)2 = - 1 which identifies them as representation of a nonstandard Wigner class. However, it is found that ELKO spinors transform symmetrically under parity instead of the previously assumed asymmetry. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that ELKO spinors transform asymmetrically under time reversal which is opposite to the previously reported symmetric behaviour. These changes affect the (anti)commutation relations that are satisfied by the operators acting on ELKO spinors. Therefore, ELKO spinors satisfy the same (anti)commutation relations as Dirac spinors, even though they belong to two different representations of the Lorentz group.<p> Afterwards, a supersymmetric model for fermionic fields with mass dimension one based on a general superfield with one spinor index is formulated. It includes the systematic derivation of all associated chiral and anti-chiral superfields up to third order in covariant derivatives. Starting from these fundamental superfields a supersymmetric on-shell Lagrangian that contains a kinetic term for the fermionic fields with mass dimension one is constructed. This on-shell Lagrangian is subsequently used to derive the on-shell supercurrent and to successfully formulate a consistent second quantisation for the component fields. In addition, the Hamiltonian in position space that corresponds to the supersymmetric Lagrangian is calculated. As the Lagrangian is by construction supersymmetric and the second quantisation of the component fields is consistent with their general supertranslations, the Hamiltonian is positive definite. This is confirmed by the results for the Hamiltonian in momentum space and the derivation of the creation and annihilation operators in momentum space. Based on these results, fermionic fields with mass dimension one represent an intriguing candidate for supersymmetric dark matter.<p> As an application the coupling of the fermionic fields with mass dimension one to the O'Raifeartaigh model is discussed. It turns out that the coupled model has two distinct solutions. The first solution representing a local minimum of the superpotential spontaneously breaks supersymmetry in perfect analogy to the O'Raifeartaigh model. The second solution is more intriguing as it corresponds to a global minimum of the superpotential. In this case the coupling to the fermionic sector restores supersymmetry. This is, however, achieved at the cost of breaking Lorentz invariance. Finally, the mass matrices for the multiplets of the coupled model are presented. It turns out that it contains two bosonic triplets and one fermionic doublet which are mass multiplets. In addition it contains a massless fermionic doublet as well as one fermionic triplet which is not a mass multiplet but rather an interaction multiplet that contains component fields of different mass dimension.<p> These results show that the presented model for fermionic fields with mass dimension one is a viable candidate for supersymmetric dark matter that could be accessible to experiments in the near future.

A discussion on regenerative design : the 2012 Beyond LEED symposium

Beard, Matthew Brannon 08 August 2012 (has links)
This is a report about modern theories of sustainability and the progression of regenerative design. I utilize a framework of sustainability put forth in 2001 by Simon Guy and Graham Farmer to analyze the content of the Beyond LEED Symposium held in January, 2012 on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Using the six logics of sustainability proposed by Guy and Farmer; eco-technic, eco-centric, eco-aesthetic, eco-cultural, eco-medical, and eco-social, I examine the results of the symposium and determine which of these logics is being employed in the development of a new, regenerative design paradigm. I will also examine whether or not the Guy and Farmer framework of sustainability, and its contained logics, represent an incomplete definition of contemporary theories of sustainability. The results of this study and of the Beyond LEED Symposium suggest a change in how we think about sustainability and regenerative design. / text

Beyond the Ground Row: The Lighting Design for Beyond the Horizon by Eugene O'Neill

McKenzie, Delaney Lea 01 May 2016 (has links)
In December of 2016, the Theater Department at Southern Illinois University (SIU) presented a production of Beyond the Horizon by Eugene O’Neill. This play, the first full-length published by O’Neill, is the journey of the Mayo family as they deal with love, loss, and the persistent need to continue reaching for a dream. This thesis document will outline my struggles to create an idealistic horizon while keeping the main characters physically rooted to their farm. Chapter 1 details my analysis of the source material and includes reviews on symbols and connections between characters. Chapter 2 is a narrative on my experience during the design process, and Chapter 3 is a review of my work and a personal critique.
