During the Middle Ages, books were rare and cherished art forms, individually hand-crafted and decorated both on the pages and on the covers. Monks transcribed religious documents and classical literature with beautiful calligraphy, bound the pages together, and illuminated the covers with leather, silver, gold, ivory, enamels, and jewels.The purpose of this creative project was to research the history of bookbinding and its metal ornamentation, focusing on Medieval treasure bindings, and to explore and execute the historical bookbinding and metalworking techniques which were studied. Four books were constructed using the flexible bookbinding method, covered with leather, and decorated with enamels, stones, etched brass, silver filigree, and constructed closures. / Department of Art

The Development of a Low Profile Alpine Touring BindingLow, Tyrone January 2010 (has links)
The design of alpine touring ski bindings has remained relatively static for the past fifteen years. During this period, the lack of innovative breakthroughs has become obvious through the number of customers who are currently unsatisfied by the products available on the market. This observation has presented a significant commercial opportunity to satisfy these users, plus many more non-consumers, with an innovative binding design. The objective of this project was to design a low profile alpine touring binding with the aim of satisfying the needs of these users.
The resulting design followed a full year of research and development in the field of alpine touring bindings. Not only were concepts formed from completely untethered and open minded thinking, but they were also formed from reviewing various designs that already existed. These designs ranged from previous alpine touring bindings that either failed or succeeded in the market for various reasons, to completely unrelated mechanisms and designs forms. Through this process, several well formed and feasible design concepts were obtained which potentially met the design specification requirements of both high performing alpine touring bindings and downhill bindings. Detailed design and analysis followed, along with the manufacture of a fully functional prototype. This was then tested and evaluated to determine the project as a success.
This project can be grouped only with a small amount of research ever conducted on the topic of alpine touring bindings. The findings, discussion and results of this work can therefore be used as a benchmark for future study into this field. Through the meticulous research conducted on skiing and ski bindings and the thorough design work carried out towards producing a prototype, this thesis presents the complete process of designing a new and innovative ski binding.

Previous issue date: 2011-05-31 / The number of people joining the Computer Science course, in the last years, is decreasing.
Among those who enter, just a few are able to graduate, because there is a great
retention rate and dropout, particularly among the introductory courses in algorithms and
programming. The use of games as a motivational factor is a subject much studied in
recent years, achieving good results for this problem. However, for the implementation
of games in education, using a constructionist approach, students are required to build
games. Several tools are available for this job, but there is a big difference in usability
between the educational tools (that focus on educational programming) and those specific
for creating games. This work proposes a framework for building games, being supported
by an extensible application through scripts which allow it to be adapted for use in various
disciplines throughout the course, and not only in introductory courses. / A quantidade de pessoas que ingressam no curso de Ciência da Computação a cada ano
está diminuindo. Dentre aqueles que entram, poucos conseguem se formar. Há uma grande
taxa de retenção e desistência, principalmente entre as disciplinas introdutórias de algoritmos
e programação. Dessa forma, a utilização de jogos como fator motivacional é um assunto
bastante estudado nos últimos anos, conseguindo bons resultados para tal problema.
Contudo, para a aplicação de jogos na educação, numa abordagem construcionista, é requerido
que alunos construam jogos. Para isso, várias ferramentas estão disponíveis com
tal intuito, mas existe uma grande diferença quanto a usabilidade e recursos disponíveis,
entre as ferramentas educacionais (que focam no ensino de programação) e as específicas
para a criação de jogos. Deste modo, esse projeto propõe um framework para a construção
de jogos, sendo apoiado por uma aplicação extensível através de scripts, que o permite
ser adaptado para a utilização, em várias disciplinas no decorrer do curso, e não somente
nas disciplinas introdutórias.

This work explores the relation between the body and garments by illustrating the cycle of dressing, wearing and undressing in woven images. Based on experimental methods, such as scanning and photographing, images of garments are generated capturing garment details, surface qualities, movement, folds and volume. These demonstrate the constantly changing relation between the body and garments within the cycle of dressing, wearing and undressing. In translating the photographs and scans of the garments into weaves, a shading technique for jacquardweaving is applied that enables a translation of an image of a 3D-garment into a flat weave keeping the 3D qualities present in the picture. Through a gradation of satin weaves, different hues are created in order to define shadows and other surface qualities. The changing relation between the body and garments is interpreted in different ways including the body’s presence as well as its absence which results in immediate material responses of the garments and demonstrates the various appearances of the body within this relation. This work results in a variety of woven images pointing out the different stages within the cycle of dressing, wearing and undressing. By using the image as a tool, its pictorial value of capturing moments of change and succession is emphasized. With this work, a new perception of bodily shapes in textiles is provided. Instead of imitating the body’s presence in garments through 3D – forms, alternative ways are shown in how to achieve a corporal illusion in flat weaving-constructions.

The task of this diploma thesis was to investigate the influence of inorganic pigments on the identification of casein oil and animal glue tempera by mass spectrometry MALDI- -TOF MS (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation - Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry). First, it was necessary to prepare a set of model colour layers containing casein and animal glue tempera together with ten inorganic pigments. Consequently, the method of peptide mass fingerprinting was used to obtain mass spectra of the samples. Finally, it was possible to compare and determine the characteristic peptide fragments for both proteinaceous binders and find pigments that most affected the identification of casein and rabbit glue temperas. The obtained values of m/z casein oil tempera and animal glue tempera were used to improve and complete reference database of protein binders that is used to identify protein binders in works of art at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague.

L'utilisation des méthodes formelles est de plus en plus courante dans le développement logiciel, et les systèmes de types sont la méthode formelle qui a le plus de succès. L'avancement des méthodes formelles présente de nouveaux défis, ainsi que de nouvelles opportunités. L'un des défis est d'assurer qu'un compilateur préserve la sémantique des programmes, de sorte que les propriétés que l'on garantit à propos de son code source s'appliquent également au code exécutable.
Cette thèse présente un compilateur qui traduit un langage fonctionnel d'ordre supérieur avec polymorphisme vers un langage assembleur typé, dont la propriété principale est que la préservation des types est vérifiée de manière automatisée, à l'aide d'annotations de types sur le code du compilateur. Notre compilateur implante les transformations de code essentielles pour un langage fonctionnel d'ordre supérieur, nommément une conversion CPS, une conversion des fermetures et une génération de code. Nous présentons les détails des représentation fortement typées des langages intermédiaires, et les contraintes qu'elles imposent sur l'implantation des transformations de code.
Notre objectif est de garantir la préservation des types avec un minimum d'annotations, et sans compromettre les qualités générales de modularité et de lisibilité du code du compilateur. Cet objectif est atteint en grande partie dans le traitement des fonctionnalités de base du langage (les «types simples»), contrairement au traitement du polymorphisme qui demande encore un travail substantiel pour satisfaire la vérification de type. / Formal methods are rapidly improving and gaining ground in software. Type systems are the most successful and popular formal method used to develop software. As the technology of type systems progresses, new needs and new opportunities appear. One of those needs is to ensure the faithfulness of the translation from source code to machine code, so that the properties you prove about the code you write also apply to the code you run.
This thesis presents a compiler from a polymorphic higher-order functional language to typed assembly language, whose main property is that type preservation is verified statically, through type annotations on the compiler's code. Our compiler implements the essential code transformations for a higher-order functional language, namely a CPS conversion and closure conversion as well as a code generation. The thesis presents the details of the strongly typed intermediate representations and the constraints they set on the implementation of code transformations.
Our goal is to guarantee type preservation with a minimum of type annotations, and without compromising readability and modularity of the code. This goal is already a reality for simple types, and we discuss the problems remaining for polymorphism, which still requires substantial extra work to satisfy the type checker.
