Atminties kodas / Memory code

Lapinskaitė, Monika 25 January 2010 (has links)
Master’s thesis spatial composition ” Memory code” aims to encourage the viewer think about the book’s as one of the most significant cultural heritage of mankind multiple meaning. Human cultural and technological development becomes more and more momentum for new modern technologies influence, gradually disappearing traditional graphical rendering techniques favor of this vast area of virtual web. The rapid development of information technology and computer reality provokes reflection not only about the future of the book but also about the book as a phenomenon of artistic destiny. Spatial composition “Memory code” is laid down in the centre of a circle of black paper on the square podium. This is a symbol of human intellectual development circle surrounded by pulsating character curve. In the historical evolution of the book its pattern gradually changed into another and also changed its medium- book. Design, written on the rock, turns into a letter, replacing papyrus parchment, it changes the paper and the paper changes the digital media. Historical facts mix and jump like a modern sinusoid curve on the modern screen.

Bookbinding with metal ornamentation

Parmenter, Dorina Miller January 1996 (has links)
During the Middle Ages, books were rare and cherished art forms, individually hand-crafted and decorated both on the pages and on the covers. Monks transcribed religious documents and classical literature with beautiful calligraphy, bound the pages together, and illuminated the covers with leather, silver, gold, ivory, enamels, and jewels. The purpose of this creative project was to research the history of bookbinding and its metal ornamentation, focusing on Medieval treasure bindings, and to explore and execute the historical bookbinding and metalworking techniques which were studied. Four books were constructed using the flexible bookbinding method, covered with leather, and decorated with enamels, stones, etched brass, silver filigree, and constructed closures. / Department of Art

Limp, laced-case binding in parchment on sixteenth-century Mexican printed books

Romero Ramírez, Martha Elena January 2013 (has links)
With the arrival of the Spaniards in the New World, the way of living of the indigenous population who habited Mesoamerica was blended with the traditions and customs of the European settlers who arrived as conquerors, and the emigrants from Europe that arrivedlater searching for fortune or a better kind of life from the one they had left behind in their land of origin. This encounter of cultures gave rise also to a technical and cultural exchange, and in the case of Mexico, this clash of cultures and techniques is well represented by the printing press, which was established in 1539 with the specific aim of accelerating the evangelisation and education of the Indians. As a consequence of this development, Mexico was turned into a centre of innovation, with the first printing press using movable metal type to be set up outside Europe, and other trades that support printing, such as bookbinding, were also developed. This thesis investigates the influence of the Spanish and other European bookbinding practices on sixteenth-century Mexican limp, laced-case parchment bindings by the analysis of the features of the bindings of Mexican printed books from that period. In addition, by the analysis of the materials and techniques used to bind these books, as well as the specific structural characteristics of the bindings, the patterns of work that could be described as typically Mexican in the sixteenth-century, are also identified. The research is divided into two parts: the first, theoretical, explains the historical context of Mexico during the sixteenth century when the printing press and bookbinding were developed. The second part concerns the archaeological study of the books as artefacts. For this purpose, thirty-nine sixteenth-century Mexican printed books bound in limp, laced caseparchment covers were analysed. The analysis of the features of these bindings, which form the majority of the whole sample, made possible the identification of Mexican patterns of work in the sixteenth century. Given the lack of information and of complete studies of the craft of bookbinding in Mexico in the sixteenth century, this thesis aims to enhance our current knowledge of the historyof bookbinding as well as of the booktrade and the market for books in Mexico.

Investigations into botanical contact printing (where the light meets the trees; thirteen variations)

Manwiller, Christine Marie 01 May 2018 (has links)
Investigations in Botanical Contact Printing (Where the Light Meets the Trees; Thirteen Variations) explores the process of botanical contact printing on paper, culminating in a series of thirteen handmade artist books. Each of the thirteen books contains a poem from a collection of thirteen poems written by Alice Yousef. Every element of the book: materials, structure, calligraphed text, type of botanical contact print, sometimes the enclosure, responds to the poem, providing a visual interpretation of the written word. The completely different approaches to binding structure in this series intend to not only visually support the text, but also explore the possibilities of botanical contact print imagery in the book form.

By measure of

Hartman, Kristen A. 01 May 2016 (has links)
A limited variable editioned artist book, by measure of depicts an allegorical conversation between medieval author Christine de Pizan and a contemporary woman. It is, in essence, an exploration of edges in which the characters examine the parameters of identity, both personally and societally designated–how to define/re-define/emphasize/blur them, and what happens in the space where they meet.

Blaževičiūtė, Aistė 27 February 2014 (has links)
Magistro darbo objektas - netradicinių, rankų darbo įrišimo knygų-objektų grupė „City Book“, kuria siekiama plėtoti senąsias knygų įrišimo technikas, paskatinti šiuolaikinius, nuo skaitmeninių technologijų vis labiau priklausomus žmones, prisiminti jau primirštą knygą ir skaitymą, kaip dvasinį ir kultūros paveldo šaltinį. Magistro darbą sudaro dvi: teorinė ir praktinė dalys. Pirmajame skyriuje pateikiama susisteminta rašto atsiradimo ir vystymosi chronologija. Aprašoma knygos raida. Nagrinėjamas knygos statusas šiuolaikinėje skaitmeninėje eroje. Antrajame skyriuje pateikiama glausta knygrišybos istorinė apžvalga. Analizuojama knygų įrišimo raida ir metodai. Plačiau aprašomas itališkasis knygų įrišimo būdas. Pateikiama knygrišystės vystymosi istorija Lietuvoje. Trečiame darbo skyriuje pateikiamos lietuvių ir užsienio menininkų kūrybinės interpretacijos knygos-objekto tema. Analizuojami šiuolaikinių dizainerių darbai, vizualiai atspindintys pasirinktą tematiką. Ketvirtajame skyriuje pateikiama anketinė apklausa, kuria siekiama išsiaiškinti šiuolaikinio žmogaus požiūrį į klasikinę ir skaitmeninę knygas, bei skaitymą. Penktame skyriuje pateikiama kolekcijos koncepcijos analizė, pristatomos netradicinės knygų grupės-objekto meninio ir technologinio sprendimo paieškos, projektavimo etapai, galutiniai projektai, vykdymo eiga. Teorinėje darbo dalyje naudojami metodai: teorinės studijos, mokslinės literatūros sisteminė ir lyginamoji analizė, analogų paieška ir tyrimai... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The subject of the master’s thesis is the ”City Book”, a group of non-traditional handbound books-objects, which aims to develop the old bookbinding techniques, encourage modern people increasingly dependent on digital technology to remember forgotten books and reading as a spiritual and cultural resource of heritage. The master’s paper consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. The first chapter provides a systematic chronology of script occurrence and its development. It describes the development of the book. Also the status of the book in today’s digital era is discussed. The second chapter provides a brief historical overview of bookbinding. It analyzes the evolution and methods of bookbinding. The Italian method of bookbinding is described more broadly. The history of the development of bookbinding in Lithuania is also provided. The third chapter presents the creative interpretations of Lithuanian and foreign artists on the topic of the book-object. Works of contemporary designers, visually reflecting the chosen topic, are analyzed. The fourth chapter presents a questionnaire aimed to establish the approach of the modern human to classical and digital books and reading. The fifth chapter provides an analysis of the concept of the collection, presents non-traditional searches of the creative and technology solution of a group of books-object, the design stages, the final projects and the execution speed. Field Guide

Helland, Madeline 01 January 2018 (has links)
Field Guide is a mixed-media artist book detailing the exploration of a fictitious culture through cartography, narrative, and illustration. It is presented through the lens of an amateur archaeologist, navigating a chain of islands to search for ruins and artifacts. In part, the project is focused on the fantasy of an imagined world. The island chain is a place entirely of my own creation. By creating the viewpoint of an outside explorer, it was possible to navigate through this world. Although I, as the artist, can know everything about this fictitious world, adopting the perspective of someone distanced by time and place allowed for discrepancies, misinterpretation, and the sense of mystery that typically colors interpretations of foreign, ancient cultures. This character is forced to fill in the context for what she is viewing based upon her conjectures, which may or may not reveal the full truth. Overall, perspective on cultures is often shaped by the observations of a few individuals. In the same way, viewers are forced to consider this culture through the lens of one character, without being entirely certain if they are consuming objective truths.
