Boredom and the Need for Agency

Kahn, Lauren 06 September 2018 (has links)
Humans are highly motivated to avoid boredom. What is the functional role of boredom, and why is it so aversive? An empirical study tested the hypothesis that a need for agency, or control over one’s actions and their effects, plays a role in our avoidance of boredom. The study also explored the role of an individual difference called experiential avoidance, which captures the tendency to avoid negative internal experiences, sometimes via problematic behaviors. Results were integrated with current clinical techniques that use mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches to address such avoidance of internal experiences. In the study, one hundred twenty-three adults completed a series of computer tasks in which their sense of agency was manipulated. After being oriented to high and medium levels of agency, participants completed a series of 30-second low agency trials in which they had the opportunity to escape to high or medium agency, at a cost. The amount of money they were willing to forego indicated their motivation to avoid low agency, or “need for agency.” After a break, they were then asked to complete a series of 30-second trials in which they did nothing, but again had the option to escape to high or medium agency at a cost. The amount of money they were willing to forego in this task indicated their motivation to avoid doing nothing, or “need for action.” Results demonstrated that on average, people were willing to give up money to avoid both low agency and to avoid a boring situation (doing nothing). Furthermore, their motivation to avoid boredom indeed was driven by the extent to which they felt that doing nothing afforded them a low sense of agency. Finally, those who were higher in experiential avoidance demonstrated a higher need for agency and action, and those lower in mindfulness demonstrated a higher need for agency. These results demonstrate that the motivation to avoid boredom may be rooted in a need for agency, and that acceptance- based clinical approaches may have success addressing this avoidance and the problematic behaviors that follow.

Contemporaneity consists of the current time in which important changes and ongoing influences give the world new forms different from those canonized by the modernity due either to the intensification or radicalization of the modernization process or to the appearance of new process, among which those processes categorized as related to the postmodernity are also found. As per Harvey (1998), postmodernity is characterized by the association and acceptance of ephemeral things and temporary things, making the ideas of acceleration, instability, precariousness, metamorphosis, fragmentation futile, as well as other ideas that compose the human condition in the current time. In this scenario of loneliness, indifference and emptiness caused by velocity, distance from the other, and weakness of relationships, two forms of subjeticvation are highlighted: depression and boredom. The first one is largely found in the current times. However this research has pointed out boredom as a subjectivation typical of the contemporaneity due to its close relation with time, particularly as the expression of an attempt of time deceleration or protest against excessive things and a vertiginous lifestyle. Boredom is characterized by tiredness of living, depotentiation of life. The main purpose of this paper was to identify and analyze expressions of boredom in Brazilian culture, and its corpus consists of lyrics from Brazilian rock in the 80s that deal with boredom. Artistic and cultural productions are considered a safe way for capturing subjectivations emerging in a given time and space, since they act out as expression – symbolic manifestation – of human experience or the experienced reality. These cultural productions were addressed through content analysis, as per Bardin (2002). This method is quite proper for textual analysis, and it induces a systematic treatment of texts which allows the extraction of significat ...

Examination of the shared variance of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory - Revised and the Boredom Proneness Scale

Millsaps, Amanda Jane 03 May 2008 (has links)
The current study was the first of its kind to examine the relationship between psychopathy and boredom. Participants were 233 psychology students, all of whom completed the Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised (PPI-R) and the Boredom Proneness Scale (BPS), both of which demonstrate multidimensional structures. Factor analysis of the BPS revealed a fouractor structure, and three independent factors have been demonstrated in the PPI-R. A multiple regression analysis confirmed the hypothesized relationships, revealing large and statistically significant relationships between Fearless Dominance of the PPI-R and Internal Boredom, as well as between Self-Centered Impulsivity of the PPI-R and External Boredom. Additional statistically and clinically significant relationships are discussed. These results suggest that boredom plays a significant role in the psychopathy personality process.

Copingové strategie u nudy / Boredom Coping strategies

Urbanová, Denisa January 2018 (has links)
The thesis concerns the effectiveness of different types of boredom coping strategies and examines the relationship between them and some of the motivational, attitudinal and volitional characteristics in high school students. In the theoretical part current state of knowledge in the field of boredom and boredom coping including diagnostic possibilites in educational context are discussed. The major part is dedicated to the presentation of current theoretical and empirical conceptions of boredom coping that are relevant to the school context, especially the assuumptions of Nett, Goetz and Daniels. Next, the concept of motivational structure at school and implicit theory of good subject instruction (Hrabal, Pavelkova) and the theory of volition (Kuhl, Fuhrmann) are presented. In empirical part, quantitative methodology is used at various levels of analysis to examine the relationships between different boredom coping strategies and various boredom aspects on one hand and some of the motivational, attitudinal and volitional characterstics on the other hand. The study captures specific individual constellations of boredom coping that are illustrated by casuistic examples and directions for future research are outlined.

Establishing the Construct of Boredom as Distinct From Apathy, Anhedonia and Depression

Goldberg, Yael January 2008 (has links)
Boredom is a common human experience that has received little attention in the literature. To date, researchers have been unable to agree on a unified theory and definition of the construct. The present study investigated the nature of boredom by exploring its relationship to three phenomenologically similar affective states, namely apathy, anhedonia and depression. Structural equation modeling revealed that although related to apathy, anhedonia and depression to varying degrees, boredom is an empirically distinct construct. Establishing boredom as an independent construct provides an important first step in bringing the field closer to a universally accepted definition of boredom, which will undoubtedly facilitate more effective assessment and treatment of the experience of boredom, particularly in individuals with psychopathological and neuropathological illnesses in which boredom is a pervasive symptom.
