By presenting the auditor as a unifying principle that links Browning's earliest works to his dramatic monologues, this dissertation enhances the importance of the ever-ignored experimental works in developing the dramatic monologue technique. An exploration of the emergence and development of the auditor has an additional, but never ancillary, effect of proclaiming the originality and inventiveness of Browning's dramatic technique.

The present thesis is a study of Robert Browning¡¦s male narrators in his dramatic monologues that deal with problematic man-woman relationships. Being a renovator of the poetic genre of dramatic monologue, Browning employs it to present men¡¦s innermost struggle and obscure emotions in love. While the Victorian gender stereotype emphasizes men¡¦s preoccupation with the business world, he demonstrates men¡¦s intense relation with love. In his poems depicting man-woman relationships, men¡¦s struggles are mainly caused by their eagerness to retain their masculinity, namely, the patriarchal order. This thesis is to explore the concept of masculinity in Browning¡¦s poems. It examines Browning¡¦s typical egoistic men and men¡¦s fantasy about women¡¦s passion. Browning¡¦s female narrators are also discussed to underscore the male-dominated viewpoint on man-woman relationships. Meanwhile it explores Browning¡¦s artist characters, including artists as narrators and not as narrators. Close textual analysis will be made of a selection of poems from Dramatic Lyrics (1842), Dramatic Romances and Lyrics (1845), Men and Women (1855), and Dramatis Personæ (1864) to see the poet¡¦s pondering upon men¡¦s twisted emotions.

Immobilization of selected enriched polyphenol oxidases and their biocatalysis in organic solvent media

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzymatic extracts were recovered from apple fruit and potato tubers and enriched by an acetone precipitation. The enriched PPO extracts were immobilized by adsorption onto a wide range of inorganic supports, including chitin, alumina oxide, glass beads, Celite, Dowex and Silica gel using selected media, including water, sodium phosphate buffer and a ternary micellar system. The highest immobilization efficiencies and specific activities were obtained when the PPO extracts were suspended in sodium phosphate buffer and adsorbed onto alumina oxide. Biocatalysis of the free and immobilized PPO extracts was investigated in selected organic solvent media, including hexane, heptane, toluene and dichloromethane, using chlorogenic acid, catechin, and the endogenous phenolic compounds from apple fruit and potato tubers as substrate models. In the organic solvent media, the free PPO extracts from apple and potato demonstrated optimal enzymatic activities at 28°C and between 25 to 35°C, respectively, whereas the immobilized extracts both showed optimal enzymatic activities at 30°C. The free and immobilized extracts from apple and potato also showed similar pH values for optimal enzymatic activity in the range of 6.0 to 6.5. The immobilized apple and potato PPO extracts demonstrated a 1.5 to 1.8 and 2.1 to 3.2-fold increases in PPO activity, respectively, compared to those observed with their free counterparts, and the lowest Km values were obtained with chlorogenic acid followed by catechin and the endogenous phenolic compounds. The immobilized and free PPOs from apple and potato also showed higher Vmax values in the hexane medium followed the heptane, toluene and dichloromethane media. The end products of PPO biocatalysis were purified by size-exclusion chromatography and detected at 280 nm for the residual catechin and endogenous phenolic compounds, and at 320 nm for the PPO-catalyzed end products. Browning's long dramatic monologue Prince Hohenstiel-Schwangau was published in 1871. No second edition was required. General critical opinion judges the poem a failure both in conception and execution. It has not been anthologised since the beginning of the century and survives only as academic property. / After a summary of existing criticism, the historical and biographical background is examined and a possible motivation for the poem's appearance is suggested. This is followed by what is certainly the first in-depth study of the manuscript. Close examination contributes to our understanding of the mechanics of Browning's poetry. / The bulk of the thesis is devoted to a close reading of the poem, a disentangling of the syntax which, apart from the poem's length, seems to be the main reason for its unpopularity. / A short conclusion argues for the poem's restoration to the canon.

Quantification of Solar Photovoltaic Encapsulant Browning Level Using Image Processing Tool

abstract: In recent years, solar photovoltaic (PV) industry has seen lots of improvements in technology and of growth in market with crystalline silicon PV modules being the most widely used technology. Plant inspections are gaining much importance to identify and quantitatively determine the impacts of various visual defects on performance. There are about 86 different types of defects found in the PV modules installed in various climates and most of them can be visually observed. However, a quantitative determination of impact or risk of each of identified defect on performance is challenging. Thus, it is utmost important to quantify the risk for each of the visual defects without any human subjectivity. The best way to quantify the risk of each defect is to perform current-voltage measurements of the defective modules installed in the plant but it requires disruption of plant operation, expensive measuring equipment and intensive human resources. One of the most riskiest and dominant visual defects is encapsulant browning which affects the PV module performance in the form of current degradation. The present study deals with developing an automated image processing tool which can address the issues of human subjectivity on browning level impacting performance. The image processing tool developed in this work can be directly used to quantify the impact of browning on performance without intrusively disconnecting the modules from the plant. In this work, the quantified browning level impact on performance has also been experimentally validated through a correlation study using short-circuit current and reflectance/transmittance measurements of browned PV modules retrieved from aged plants/systems installed in diverse climatic conditions. The primary goal of the image processing tool developed in this work is to determine the performance impact of encapsulant browning without interrupting the plant operation for I-V measurements. The use of image processing tool provides a single numerical value, called browning index (BI), which can accurately quantify browning levels on modules and also correlate with the performance and reflectance/transmittance parameters of the modules. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 2016
