How Sleep and Burnout Interact in the Treatment of Poor Sleep

ISAMAH, UCHE January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores the interaction between sleep and burnout in the treatment of poor sleep. Sleep isvital for overall health and recovery from daily life demands, while stress is closely related to sleepdisruptions. Chronic insomnia can develop from sleep disturbances caused by stress. Burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, physical fatigue, and cognitive weariness, is a prevalentconsequence of chronic stress. Sleep quality is greatly influenced by various factors and has a significantimpact on overall well-being. This study investigates how sleep quality and burnout at baseline of ashort, student-led, group treatment, affect sleep quality as a treatment outcome. It hypothesizes thathigher stress and poorer sleep at baseline would predict unchanged or impaired sleep qualityimmediately after treatment, and that poor sleep and burnout would individually have a positiverelationship with sleep as a treatment outcome. The data for this study is obtained from a sleepintervention program conducted by students from the Master's Program in Clinical Psychology at UmeåUniversity in collaboration with Region Västerbotten. The participants completed questionnairesassessing their background information, stress levels, burnout, and sleep quality at baseline and aftertreatment. The findings showed no interaction effects between sleep and burnout but indicate thatpatients with poorer sleep at intake may not benefit from the treatment program whereas high burnoutdoes not affect the treatment outcome. The short, student-led, group treatment does not seem tobenefit people with severe sleep problems.

Effects of Burnout Treatmenton Cognitive Functions and onSubjective Well-Being

Dervisic, Jasenko January 2019 (has links)
Burnout syndrome is increasingly affecting more people in Westerncountries. The question of treatment is important. In this study, we recruitedand investigated 27 burnout patients (16 women, 9 men) and 20 healthycontrols (8 men and 12 women) before and after an intervention. Theintervention consisted of a combination of both cognitive therapy, cognitivebehavioral therapy, individual counseling, and a form of mindfulness grouptherapy (centered around own body awareness) to see whether the treatmenthad an effect on cognitive functions possibly affected by burnout and onsubjective well-being. A battery of neuropsychological tests andquestionnaires were administered to all participants, once before treatment, and once after. All test scores were z transformed and reduced to compositevariables, measuring executive function, verbal memory function andpsychomotor function. No significant interaction effects between group andtest occasions were found. Treatment does not appear to influence cognitivefunctions affected in burnout. However, reports of subjective well-being asmeasured by questionnaires improved after treatment.

Burnout prevention interventions for mental health professionals : a systematic review and investigation into the role of personal resources in the development of burnout in mental health nurses

Hall, Louise January 2016 (has links)
Mental health professionals are at high risk of experiencing work-related stress and burnout due to the challenging and highly emotive environments in which they work. This may lead to a range of physical and psychological symptomology which may affect them and also the quality of care provided to patients. This thesis presents a systematic review of the literature regarding the effectiveness of workplace interventions designed to reduce or prevent work-related stress and burnout when compared to no intervention or alternative interventions for mental health professionals working in adult mental health settings. The thesis then presents an empirical study, using the Job Demands-Resources model of burnout. Personal resources (styles of coping, self-compassion, cognitive fusion and valued living) were tested as (a) moderators of the relationship between job demands and exhaustion and (b) mediators of the relationship between job resources and disengagement within a sample of mental health nurses. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomised controlled trials (N-RCTs), controlled before and after (CBA) and interrupted time series workplace (ITS) interventions were conducted. Primary outcomes were occupational stress and burnout. An assessment of strength of evidence was made using GRADE criteria. A quantitative cross-sectional survey of 214 mental health nurses was used to examine the role of: self-compassion, cognitive fusion, engaged living and coping in the development of burnout. Results Thirteen eligible studies were identified comprising 11 RCTs and 2 CBA’s. Overall, there was no beneficial effect of organisational and relaxations intervention was found for reducing burnout or work-related stress. There are some promising findings for the effectiveness of staff training and psychosocial interventions in the short and medium-term. Overall, the quality of studies was low due to risk of bias and a lack of precision due to low number of participants in each study. In the empirical paper, the moderating role of personal resources in the development of exhaustion was not supported. By contrast the mediating role of personal resource between job resources and disengagement was supported. Discussion At present, there is limited evidence for the effectiveness of workplace interventions. This is influenced by the low number of intervention studies and the quality of interventions to date for mental health professionals. There is preliminary evidence for the potential for third-wave cognitive behavioural interventions such as acceptance commitment therapy in reducing disengagement in mental health nurses. Interventions to reduce exhaustion need to include strategies to reduce job demands.

In this study, the instrument was translated to Portuguese and afterwards the survey was applied in a financial institution. The instrument was submitted to a statistic validation with the use of factorial analysis - Equamax rotation and tests KMO and Barlett - opening the way to the comparison with Barnet works et al. (1999), Gil-Monte (2002), Jimenez (2002) and Maslach & Jackson (1986). It was identified a structure with five factors in the process of validation of Maslach Burnout Inventory opening new perspectives of analysis of this syndrome in the working place. The octagonal rotation did not confirm the factors predicted by Maslach and Jackson. This way the factors were called: 1 - Street in the workplace; 2 - Interpersonal relationship; 3 - Satisfaction in the workplace; 4 - Interest in the customer service; 5 - Apathy in the workplace. / Burnout, um fen??meno amplamente estudado, tem sido definido como tendo uma estrutura fatorial de tr??s dimens??es. One of the reasons for the increase in research on this topic is the repercussions of working conditions on health, well-being and employee engagement and, consequently, on the functioning and effectiveness of organizational results. In the organizational results, the negative impact of these variables has been estimated based on the results of research that stressed workers decrease their performance and increase the costs of organizations with health problems, increasing absenteeism, turnover and the number of work accidents . While engaged employees work more effectively, generating better results, feeling more satisfied and refreshed. Considering the relevance of the theme, the present study proposed to analyze the effects of burnout, stress and work engagement on work and general welfare. To that end, the participants were submitted to an occupational stress scale, burnout scale, engagement scale, work wellness scale and answered a self-administered questionnaire. The final results of this study were published in the form of a master's thesis and articles published in scientific circles.
