This thesis explores the possibilities of communication in the context of a sound composition. In RevealingReveilingReveling, a series of questions concerning communication posed by John Cage, coupled with an extension of those questions posed by myself, are set to recorded sounds-in-the-world. The intention is to create a greater awareness of that which there is to listen in our world. The first part of this essay discusses influences of philosophical thought during the process of composing RevealingReveilingReveling. Two distinct twentieth-century thinkers that have impacted the creation of this piece and their areas of thought are Martin Heidegger: language and Being; and John Cage: sound, silence, and awareness. The second part of the essay is a structural analysis of the piece, discussing the recording of Cage's questions, sounds-in-the-world, sound-manipulation techniques and thought-processes, as well as periodic mention the aesthetic decisions made.

Impact of the Northern Fowl Mite on Laying Hen Production and Welfare Beginning at 17 Weeks of Age

<p> The northern fowl mite (<i>Ornithonyssus sylviarum</i>) is an obligate blood-feeding ectoparasite of poultry that can cause decreased egg production, profit loss, anemia, irritation to flocks and personnel, and death to hens in extreme cases. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the northern fowl mite (NFM) on laying hen performance and welfare quality beginning at 17 weeks of age. Two flocks (Trials 1 and 2) involved 800 Tetra Brown hens (n=200 per room) housed in four cage-free rooms at the Purdue University Poultry Unit. Two rooms were infested with NFM and two rooms served as controls. In Trial 1, initial NFM infestation occurred at 24 weeks on 2% (4 hens) in each of the NFM rooms. Because NFM populations were scarce, a second infestation on 2% of hens occurred at 35 weeks. A final attempt to infest with NFM occurred at 41 weeks with all hens in NFM rooms being infested. In Trial 2, initial NFM infestation occurred at 24 weeks on 2% (4 hens) in each of the NFM rooms and a second infestation took place on 2% of hens at 30 weeks of age to boost the NFM population. Egg production and mortality were recorded daily and case weights were recorded weekly. Monthly Welfare Quality® assessments were taken, as well as monthly mite counts on all birds beginning at 28 weeks. Mite checks were conducted periodically on 25% (50 hens) in all rooms between weeks 25 and 38. Data were analyzed in SAS® using the GLM procedure and an ANCOVA and all significant statistical differences were reported at P < 0.05. Proportion of hens with a mite infestation was treated as the covariate. In Trial 1, regardless of treatment, mortality increased dramatically after 21 weeks, leading to a loss of 473 hens by period 7. NFM hen-day production percentage (HD) was approximately 2% lower than the Tetra management guide and control HD was 7% higher than the Tetra management guide. In Trial 1, treatment had an effect on HD, case weights, and feather damage on the belly (P < 0.05). Proportion of hens infested with mites had an effect on percent shell and feather damage on the belly. Cannibalism and pecking in Trial 1 led to extreme feather loss, high mortality, and negatively impacted production parameters. Feather loss and high mortality contributed to the low NFM populations. In Trial 2, percent livability remained high (approximately 97% for both groups) and HD remained slightly lower than the Tetra management guide (9% and 8% lower for control and NFM), respectively. In Trial 2, treatment had an effect on eggs per hen housed, mortality, feather damage on the head and neck, and skin lesions (P < 0.05). Proportion of birds infested with mites had an effect on feather damage on the back, crop, head, and neck (P < 0.05).</p>

Outcomes and Presurgical Correlates of Lumbar Interbody Cage Fusion

Rates of lumbar fusion surgery have been increasing with an estimated 192,000 procedures performed annually. However, satisfactory outcomes of lumbar fusion vary considerably and often emphasize technical success, such as arthrodesis, rather than Ill functional and quality of life outcomes. Interbody cage fusion was recently developed and touted as a superior alternative to existing lumbar fusion procedures. There is, however, a paucity of research to support these claims, particularly with regards to functional and quality of life outcomes. Moreover, predictive correlates of outcomes for interbody cage fusion have not been given adequate attention in the literature. The aims of this study were to characterize patients undergoing this new procedure, examine functional and multidimensional outcomes, and investigate the predictive efficacy of presurgical variables. A retrospective cohort research design was employed and entailed medical record reviews for presurgical data and telephone outcome surveys at least 18 months following surgery. Seventy-three patients who had undergone lumbar interbody cage fusion were identified from the private practice of an orthopedic surgeon and the Workers' Compensation Fund of Utah. Presurgical variables coded for analysis included age at the time of surgery, severity rating of presurgical spinal pathology, smoking tobacco, depression, and pursuing litigation at the time of surgery. Of the total sample, 56 patients (76.7%) completed outcome surveys that assessed patient satisfaction, back-specific functioning, disability status, and physical and mental health functioning. While arthrodesis was achieved for most patients (84%), almost half were dissatisfied with their current back condition. Outcomes regarding disability and functioning were mixed. Arthrodesis was only moderately associated with better outcome and for a quite limited set of measure s. Three of the five presurgical variables (tobacco use, depression, and litigation) were consistently predictive of patient outcomes. Findings are discussed and compared to existing data on lumbar fusion procedures , and clinical implications for improved patient selection and possible interventions are highlighted. Consideration is given to the limitations of this study, such as retrospective design, no matched controls , and sample size. Directions for future research are suggested.

Synthesis and Characterization of Silver-Gold Nanocage With Enhanced Thermal Stability

Silver-gold nanocages have attracted considerable research interest recently due to their excellent performance in the fields of biomedicine and photocatalysis. These applications oftentimes manipulate at elevated temperatures and therefore impose demands on the thermal stability of the cage structures. To better understand this subject, in this work, we systematically evaluated the thermal stability of two nanocages with different wall thicknesses of 3.8 nm and 13 nm, both in the solution-phase (diethylene glycol) and solid-phase (in-situ STEM). The results revealed that the nanocages with thicker walls exhibited better thermal stabilities in both phases. By monitoring and analyzing the morphology changes of the nanocages, we determined that the nanocages with thin and thick walls undergo deformation processes differently. Nevertheless, they both deformed into more thermodynamically stable structures eventually. The plasmonic properties of the nanocages were also examined.

Wall, traditionally an enclosing element in architecture, has been used throughout the ages for functions like privacy, protection, definition of spaces, and also to provide attractive facades. Visually walls can be more than a mere static element. Over time, attempts have been made by various architects to explore and redefine the role of a wall as an architectural element. The wall can enhance, adorn, aggrandize, beautify, embellish...... My thesis aims at exploring the role of a wall in a building and moving beyond the boundaries of its primary functions. The wall in this project is a multi-layered , transparent, clear and lucid enclosure wrapping the inner solids. The idea is to have solid and opaque geometrical planes and volumes as inner cores and masking these with an outer envelope of double-glass and steel. The study delves further into the interaction between the three assemblies. / Master of Architecture
