Ensaios dinâmicos de biossorção de cobre com macroalgas em leitos-fixos contendo materiais adsorventes de natureza não-biológica / Dynamic assays of copper biosorption with macroalgae in fixed-beds containing non-biological adsorbent materials

Ricardo Neves da Motta 29 April 2013 (has links)
Its close to adsorption using conventional adsorbents. Biosorption depends on temperature, pH, initial concentration of metal ion and type of biosorbents. The main objective of this dissertation is to study and compare the adsorption of copper ions from aqueous solution in batch and continuous system using Sargassum sp.; wet and dehydrated calcium alginate; powder and granular activated carbon. Calcium alginate was prepared by 4% w/v sodium alginate solution dropwise into 37% w/v calcium chloride dehydrate. Calcium alginate presented 89% of moisture after dry in an oven at 100C for 24 hours. Biosorption parameters were set as follow: dose of adsorbent 2 g/L; temperature at 30C, pH at 5.0, and stirring speed of the rotating plate at 150 rpm. For the kinetic and equilibrium studies, the tests were done in a batch system. In kinetic assays for two concentrations (0.16 and 3.15 mmol/L) was varied contact time (1-120 min) to reach equilibrium. In equilibrium assays were varied concentrations (0.16 to 15.72 mmol/L) using the time determined in kinetic experiments. It was used two kinetic modeling (the pseudo-first-order and second-order) and two equilibrium modeling (Langmuir and Freundlich). The second-order kinetic model better fitted the results. The equilibrium time for adsorption of copper was 60 minutes for Sargassum sp. and wet and dehydrated calcium alginate pellets. For the activated carbon, equilibrium times for the adsorption of copper were obtained faster, but the capacity of copper removal were extremely low. Based on the unfavorable results obtained for the activated carbon they were discharged to proceed with tests of equilibrium. The Freundlich isotherm fitted the experimental data for Sargassum sp. and wet calcium alginate. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated using Freundlich model: at equilibrium concentration of 11.66 0.06 mmol/L was 1.97 0.07 mmol/g for Sargassum sp. and at equilibrium concentration of 12.12 0.03 mmol/L was 1.69 0.04 mmol/g for wet calcium alginate. Biosorption in a continuous system, with bed heights from 10 to 40 cm, had the best performance with a height of 40 cm. In a batch system, the performance of Sargassum sp. was higher than calcium alginate (wet rather than dehydrated), which in turn were higher than the performance of powder and granular active carbon (powder better than granular). The continuous system with initial copper concentration of 8.5 mmol/L, must be operated with a bed height equal or greater 40 cm, or with multicolumn systems for more concentrated solutions

Etude des phénomènes liés à la conception de mini-comprimés orodispersibles par compression directe / Study of the phenomena related to the design of orodispersible mini tablets by direct compression

Soulairol, Ian 05 October 2017 (has links)
Patient acceptability of a medical product is a key aspect in the development of medicines. Oral administration of dry forms presents still several limitations in some medical specialties such as pediatrics, neurology or geriatrics. Orodispersible Mini Tablets (ODMTs) have been described as a potential solution to these drawbacks. In this thesis, the different parameters governing the design of these pharmaceutical forms by direct compression have been studied.Three main lines of research have been followed to carry out this work:- Firstly, the different parameters of formulation and manufacture of orodispersible mini tablets were evaluated.- Secondly, the behavior of different commercial super disintegrants, key excipents in the disintegrating action, was studied in order to improve our understanding of the phenomena governing the disintegration mechanisms of the ODMTs.- Finally, various alginate-based materials were developed and its function as super disintegrants in orodispersible mini tablets was tested. The obtained results can be used as indicatives in the choice of excipient and the technical parameters for an effective manufacture of OMDTs. Moreover, they have highlighted the need to continue defining specifications and characterization techniques dedicated to further development of OMDTs. The results obtained during the hydration studies (swelling ratio, swelling force and water uptake) of the super disintegrants underline the importance of wicking in the disintegration mechanism of the ODMT.Finally, the prepared alginate-based materials have shown to present interesting mechanical properties for the development of effective and available super disintegrants for direct compression. The choice of suitable super disintegrants for ODMTs formulation requires extensive knowledge of their properties for promoting the breakout of the tablet and of their interaction with both, water and the various materials constituting the tablet. Thus, the knowledge gained in this thesis on super disintegrant functionality will promote the appropriate development of this innovative pharmaceutical form.

Use Of Calcium-alginate As A Coagulant For Low Turbidity Waters

Yuksel, Mete Avni 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to investigate the possibility of using calcium-alginate as a coagulant in low turbidity waters. Jar tests were initially performed with synthetically prepared turbid waters to investigate the effect of alginate and calcium concentrations, alginate&rsquo / s molecular weight, rapid mixing time and speed (schedule), initial pH and alkalinity of synthetic water on turbidity removal efficiency of calcium-alginate system step by step. Alum as a coagulant was then used in jar tests conducted with synthetic water to compare with calcium-alginate in terms of its turbidity removal efficiency and produced sludge properties. Finally, raw water acquired from water treatment plant was tested for treatability by using calcium-alginate based on previously determined optimum parameters via jar tests. Experiments of calcium-alginate system with synthetic water showed that calcium was a key parameter in coagulation and high molecular weight alginate performed better in turbidity removal. Significant improvements in turbidity removal were observed when mixing schedules were rearranged / especially in case of increasing rapid mixing time following calcium dosing. Calcium-alginate system neither was notably affected by pH or alkalinity nor did significantly change the pH or alkalinity of the medium. Alum worked well in turbidity removal with additional adjustments of pH and alkalinity, however / alum produced higher quantities of sludge than calcium-alginate system. &ldquo / Raw water&ldquo / experiments with calcium-alginate did not result in desired level of turbidity removals due to the excessively different characteristics of this water compared to the synthetically prepared turbid water.

Use Of Calcium Alginate As A Coagulant In Water Treatment

Coruh, Hale Aylin 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Coagulation and flocculation processes are important parts of water and wastewater treatment. Coagulation or destabilization of colloidal suspensions results in aggregation of colloidal particles by physical and chemical processes. Flocculation results in the formation of larger and settleable structures by bridging. Alginate, a polysaccharide obtained from marine brown algae, produces a gel structure when mixed with calcium ions, which is expected to be a potential coagulant in water treatment. This study aims to determine the use of calcium alginate as a potential coagulant during water treatment and determine its capabilities and deficiencies in coagulation processes. The study was conducted on turbid water samples prepared in the laboratory and those taken from the inlet of Ankara ivedik Water Treatment Plant (IWTP) by running typical jar tests. The main experimental variables were initial alginate and calcium doses, initial turbidity of water samples and the order with which the two chemicals are dosed. The main criteria investigated to check the success of the system was the final turbidity values and the turbidity removal capacity of calcium- alginate. Experiments were conducted on three different laboratory &ndash / prepared turbid water samples and on the raw water taken from the inlet point of Ankara ivedik Drinking Water Treatment Plant (IWTP). These were prepared as high (150 NTU) medium (80 NTU) and low (10 NTU) turbidity samples. The calcium concentrations tested varied between 30 and 200 mg/L and alginate concentrations tested varied between 0.04 to 40 mg/L. Depending on the initial turbidity and initial calcium concentration of water sample the results depict that calcium alginate could be used as an effective coagulant for high (150 NTU) and medium (80 NTU) turbidity water sample especially at the calcium doses of 120 and 160 mg/L for low alginate concentration doses like 0.4 mg/L. The final turbidity met both the requirements of Drinking Water Standards applied in Turkey and Europe. Generally, the higher the initial turbidity was, the higher the turbidity removal efficiency achieved, even with very low alginic acid concentration. As the initial turbidity decreased, initial concentration of calcium required for the effective coagulation processes decreased. However, for low (10 NTU) turbidity water samples the system did not work properlyHowever, for low turbidity water samples, the turbidity removal efficiency decreased, and it was difficult to meet the limits.

Quantifying diffusion in biofilms : from model hydrogels to living biofilms

Golmohamadi, Mahmood 07 1900 (has links)
Biofilms are primarily communities of microorganisms embedded in a complex exopolymer matrix. They are thought to play an important role as diffusive barriers in environmental systems and human health, resulting in increased resistance to disinfectants and antibiotics. Since mass transport in a biofilm is primarily due to molecular diffusion, it is critical to understand the main parameters influencing diffusive fluxes in a biofilm. In this thesis, a Pseudomonas fluorescens biofilm and two model hydrogels, (agarose and calcium alginate), were investigated. Both self-diffusion (Brownian motion) and mutual diffusion coefficients were quantified. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy was used to measure the self-diffusion coefficients in a ca. 1 m3 confocal volume in the gels or biofilms, whereas a diffusion cell setup was employed for mutual diffusion measurements. In addition, microelectrode voltammetry was used to evaluate Donnan potential of the gels in order to determine its impact on diffusion. For the agarose hydrogel, the combined observations of a decreasing self-diffusion coefficient coupled with increasing mutual diffusion as a function of a decreasing ionic strength have been attributed to the gel’s Donnan potential. Measurements of the Donnan effect (difference of -30 mV between ionic strengths of 10-4 and 10-1 M) and the corresponding accumulation of ions in the hydrogel (13x enhancement with respect to the bulk solution) indicated that electrostatic interactions can strongly influence the diffusive flux of cations, even in a weakly charged hydrogel, such as agarose. Somewhat surprisingly, for a more highly charged gel such as calcium alginate, varying ionic strength and pH resulted in only small changes to the diffusion of charged probes in the hydrogel. These results suggested that the direct effect of the cations on gel structure (due to an induced swelling or compression) was much more effective than the Donnan effect when influencing solute diffusion. Similarly, for a bacterial biofilm, self-diffusion coefficients were virtually constant across a range of examined ionic strengths (10-4-10-1 M) for both negatively and positively charged small solutes (Db/Dw≈85%) and nanoparticles (Db/Dw≈50%), suggesting that the obstruction effect of the biofilms again overwhelmed the charge effect. The results of this work indicated that among the various major factors affecting diffusion in an oligotrophic environmental biofilm (steric exclusion, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions), obstruction effects appeared to be the most important when attempting to understand the solute diffusion. While charge effects did not appear to be important to the self-diffusion of charged substrates in the alginate hydrogel or bacterial biofilm, they were key to understanding diffusion through another gel, with numerous biomedical and environmental applications, i.e. agarose. These results should be extremely useful when evaluating the bioavailability of the trace contaminants and nanoparticles in the environment.

Fiol Santaló, Núria 08 February 2005 (has links)
Adsorption with activated carbon is a usual treatment to remove metals from wastewater. In order to reduce the cost of the treatment, several studies have been carried out to evaluate the use of low cost sorbents as an alternative to conventional sorbents used in wastewater treatment. In this work, the use of different vegetable wastes from agricultural or industrial processes has been evaluated as sorbents for metal removal from aqueous solutions. The aim of this work was to study first, the usefulness of olive stones as a sorbent for divalent metals such as Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions and then the use of four vegetable wastes (yohimbe bark, grape stalks, cork and olive stones) for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The vegetable waste powder was encapsulated in calcium alginate to obtain spherical gel beads that were used in continuous flow process for Cr(VI) removal. In all sorption experiments, kinetic data were modeled by the pseudo-second order kinetic equation and determine the constants sorption rates. Langmuir and Freundlich model isotherms were use to describe sorption equilibrium data and to obtain the isotherm parameters. In binary mixtures, the extended Langmuir isotherm model was used. The results showed that olive stones are a good sorbent for studied divalent metal. Metal uptake was pH dependent and the presence of salts in solution provokes a decrease in metal uptake. A clear competence between metals to be adsorbed on the waste was observed in metal binary mixtures. Although results obtained in Cr(VI) removal studies show that the four studied wastes can adsorb Cr(VI), grape stalks and yohimbe bark wastes showed the best chromium sorption capacity. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy analysis on grape stalks and yohimbe chromium loaded samples put into evidence that both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) were sorbed on wastes surface indicating that Cr(VI) sorption process involves a redox reaction. The gel beads obtained when encapsulating grape stalks in calcium alginate showed a significant increase in Cr(VI) sorption capacity compared to the original grape stalks waste. A diffusion model was used to analyze the experimental data and to determine the diffusion coefficient for Cr(VI) sorption by beads containing different percentage of grape stalks encapsulated in calcium alginate. Finally, preliminary studies of Cr(VI) removal in continuous flow using the beads containing grape stalks powder gel in laboratory columns have been carried out. The effect of operating parameters such as feed metal concentration, flow rate and bed depth was studied. The mass transfer and diffusion model used to describe column data showed the effect of feed metal concentration and flow rate in both, diffusion and mass transfer coefficients, respectively. The bed depth service time model (BDST) failed in predicting the service time when changing operating parameters due to the complexity of the sorption process. With these preliminary column experiments we established the basis for Cr(VI) sorption by the proposed sorbent in continuous flow process for further development of the process to be used in higher scale columns.
