[pt] ALGORITMOS ELEITORAIS: IMPACTO DA MINERAÇÃO DE DADOS DE UMA DEMOCRACIA / [en] ELECTORAL ALGORITHMS: DATA MINING IMPACTS ON A DEMOCRACY

CÁSSIA RAINNY PIRES PINHEIRO 28 February 2019 (has links)
[en] This paper presents as a case study the North American election of 2016 and the use of electoral propaganda as a way to illustrate the new Data Economy. The era of the information society (Castells, 1999) makes use of communication technologies to inform, make purchases, maintain contacts, and part of this process requires that information be provided that will be stored in large databases. Cambridge Analytica is one of the participants in this newly formed market, which has been able to put an economic value on the vast amount of data, and through mining and analysis of data have been able to form a profile of voters, and this is the company s product: targeted advertising. With the rise of the Internet it was possible to increase the intensity with which information is transferred, the ability to change speed and reduce distances is what differentiates the new phase of world history. Giving the appearance of pricing the user information - which eventually become products in this market – this article intends to present the need to strengthen the legislation that prescribes how these companies should act. Especially because in the absence of laws that require consent, the transparency of mining, and how data analysis is done, the rights of individuals are undermined, and we are faced with the possible manipulation of the share of society that is affected by the advertisements . And if democracy is governed by freedom of information and a free society, the disinformation of that society becomes a threat.

The rational theology of Benjamin Whichcote, father of the Cambridge Platonists

Roberts, James Deotis January 1957 (has links)
In the history of the philosophy of seventeenth century England, empiricism overshadows idealism, and the theological treatment of the thought of "old priest and new presbyter" is given preference. The Cambridge Platonists have been woefully neglected by philosophers and theologians alike. In this study we are primarily concerned with the rational theology of Benjamin Whichcote and his thought as reflected in the writings of his disciples and successors. It is natural that since he is the father of the Platonists, any thorough treatment of his life and thought will cast light upon the entire movement and its collective influence. Our purpose in this study is to bring Whichcote from a place of relative obscurity to a point of observation where the real man and his thought may be seen and examined. This being the burden of this study, the obvious place to begin is with the man himself. The clue to Whichcote's influence is to be found in his contemporary setting. A critical examination of his posthumous writings are in order since some works ascribed to him are spurious. Standing as he does at the head of a movement, it is essential to find Whichcote's place in the history of thought. He was not a systematic philosopher or theologian, but this does not minimise the pervasive influence of his thought upon his disciples and successors. He is a rational theologian who recognises truth from all spheres, but his intention is an apology for the Christian faith.

Context and change : a neighborhood block in Cambridgeport

Molestina, Juan Pablo January 1982 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1982. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (leaf 81). / This thesis addresses the problem of developing continuity between an existing residential area and a design of a medium density housing development. An identification of architectural patterns in the area of the site yields an abstract model of a typical block involving different building types on different zones of the block. This model is applied to the organization of the new housing development and modified to suit new programmatic requirements. Ensuing design development shows that continuity with an urban residential context can be found at both an organizational level and at the level of architectural detail, while responding to the demands of a new housing programme. / by Juan Pablo Molestina. / M.Arch.

Architecture that affords play

Fallon, Paul Eric January 1981 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1981. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 190-194). / Play is a form of behavior common to all people. A person's propensity to play depends not only on his physiological and emotional state, but also on his surroundings. This thesis investigates environmental qualities condusive to play, and poses some ideas about how designers can provide opportunities for both active and fantasy play in places that we use on a regular basis. The thesis addresses the issue of 'what is play?' by establishing a working definition of play in terms of an individual player and his surroundings. This definition then serves as the basis for evaluating how a number of quite different environments afford play for their users. These observations provide the framework for developing some design parameters which an architect might use in designing places that afford play. The parameters are then applied to a short design exploration of how the main corridor at MIT might be redesigned to better afford play. / by Paul Eric Fallon. / M.Arch.

Relação entre funções cognitivas e perdas adquiridas na visão de cores de pacientes com esclerose múltipla tipo remitente recorrente / Relationship between cognitive functions and acquired color vision loss in patients with relapsing-remitting type of multiple sclerosis

Teixeira, Rosaní Aparecida Antunes 12 September 2012 (has links)
It is two times more frequent in women. It can be presented in two subtypes: the relapsing-remitting (RR), most common type, characterized by two or more episodes of focal disorders in different sites of the CNS, and remission of the symptoms; and the progressive subtype, less common, characterized by a continuous worsening of the symptoms, since the beginning, usually with no remissions. The present research evaluated color vision impairment and its relationship to attention loss, short-term memory, long-term memory, working memory and executive function in patients with the relapsing-remitting MS type. Methods: 41 patients with multiple sclerosis (20 to 58 years, 35.4 ± 12.2 in average) and 37 controls matched to age (34.7 ± 12.1 in average) and years of education participated of the study. Color vision was tested using the Cambridge Colour Test (CCT) and the neuropsychological assessment was performed using tests of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Testing Automated Battery (CANTAB) - Pattern Recognition Memory, Spatial Span, Spatial Recognition Memory, Information Sampling Task, Stop Signal Task, Rapid Information Processing the Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories and the Functional Assessment of Multiple Sclerosis quality of life instrument. Results: Color vision was diffusely impaired in 24% of the MS patients, with or with no history of optic neuritis. Patients also showed a delay during the tasks execution, impairment in attention, short and long-term visual memory and working memory, and slowness in the information processing. There was a relationship between color vision loss and visual memory impairment, but only in tests with complex and highly detailed stimuli

Property and Democracy¡GA Critical study of Macpherson's Political Thought

Ku, Chen-Min 15 July 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to give a critical analysis of ¡§Macphersonian possessive individualism¡¨, with regards to the issues of historical methodology as well as political theory. Having introduced my project of study in the opening chapter, I begin chapter two with an examination of the very idea of ¡§possessive individualism¡¨ proposed by C. B. Macpherson, and the theory of property and democracy that the thinker comes to develop in his later works. In chapter three, I turn to cope with the methodological problems implicit in Macpherson¡¦s study of history, mainly in terms of the Cambridge School¡¦s serious attack on its anti-historicity. In addition, the relative criticisms that I have addressed to Macpherson¡¦s methodology include the Marxist determinism and the Rationalist mode of modernity that appear his work. In chapter four, by contrast, it is Macpherson¡¦s theory of property and democracy that is under consideration. Here, taking the thought of Hayek as my case, I set out to show how the liberal formulations of democracy and property can still be free from Macpherson¡¦s Marxist charge. Finally, I conclude this thesis with a brief talk about the plausibility of Giddens¡¦ third way as the possible solution for the long-term debate regarding the intricate tension between property and equality.
