Fredriksson, Anna, Sandberg, Rebecka January 2020 (has links)

History of Virginia's 4-H Camping Program: A Case Study on Events Leading to the Development of the 4-H Educational Centers

Meadows, Robert Ray 21 March 1997 (has links)
Residential camping has long been used as a tool to reach and teach educational concepts to youth. Since the founding of the first organized residential camp in 1823 at Round Hill School's Summer Camp in Massachusetts, private and public organizations have used camping as a means to teach youth their respective missions and goals. Although a relative newcomer in the camping business when compared to other agencies and groups, 4-H has been involved in camping since the first county camp was conducted in 1915. Virginia has long been in the business of 4-H camping, reaching thousands of youth throughout the years on an annual basis. Now, ranked third nationally in total numbers of youth attending 4-H camping on an annual basis, the 4-H mission "...assisting youth, and adults working with those youth, to gain additional knowledge, life skills, and attitudes that further their development as self-directing, contributing, and productive members of society" continues to be carried out through the residential camping program. The purpose of this dissertation is to describe, record and analyze the concept that provided the foundation for the Virginia 4-H camping program becoming a reality of the 4-H educational centers. It includes the early history of the camping movement in the United States, the beginnings of the 4-H club program in the United States and Virginia, and 4-H involvement in reaching and involving youth audiences through camping programs. The population for this study consisted of early pioneers in the 4-H camping program representing Virginia Cooperative Extension administrators and extension agents, camp staffs, and campers from both white and African-American camping programs, as separate 4-H camping programs were conducted. A systematic document research and structured interviews of the early pioneers was conducted to reach defensible conclusions about the establishment, operation, and purpose of the 4- H camping movement in Virginia. The outcomes of this study are fourfold. First, the study serves to document the organized camping movement in the United States and the beginnings of 4-H. Second, the study explores the early beginnings of the 4-H camping movement in the country with the national 4-H camping movement. Third, the study examined the persons, events, founding and early development of the 4-H camping program in Virginia, including the separate white and African-American camping programs for Whites and African-Americans. Fourth, the study documented the history of Virginia's six 4-H educational centers. The study endeavors to contribute to the body of knowledge concerning the history of the 4-H movement in Virginia. / Ph. D.

Larsson, Anna January 2023 (has links)
This scientific study has focused on seeing whether the phenomenon of glamping can be implemented as a development strategy within campsites in Västra Götaland and Värmland. Environmental sustainability based on the participating businesses has also been studied to make it possible to see similarities and differences between businesses within glamping, camping with glamping and pure camping businesses. Camping and glamping businesses were chosen partly through an interest in glamping, partly through experience of working on campsites during the study period. Both the interest in glamping and the experience in working with camping, the author believes, has given both insight into the field of camping as well as an increased interest in glamping as a business development strategy for camping businesses. The study's method consists of a qualitative content analysis based on qualitative semi-structured interviews. Furthermore, an analysis of the participating businesses' websites has been carried out, to get as good an overall picture of the business's environmental sustainability work as possible.  The study has resulted in seeing whether glamping can be used for the purpose of business development within existing camping operations. The results show that there are different answers to what glamping is, and what it is not, but that glamping can be used as a business development strategy to enable a new target group of visitors, but also as a Unique Selling Point "USP" for businesses that offer glamping in relation to businesses that does not offer glamping. The study has also resulted in a checklist to simplify the development of businesses that want to move from camping to glamping to enable future sustainable tourism.

Patterns of coastal tourism growth and multiple dwelling : implications for informal camping along the Ningaloo coastline

Lawrie, Misty Suanne January 2008 (has links)
Over the past few decades, the development of coastal areas has become an increasingly contested arena. For many years, tourism in remote coastal areas has been the preserve of a few intrepid campers, surfers and recreational fishers. More recently, however, numbers along parts of the coast have increased rapidly, not only contributing to an expansion of camping activity, but also pressure for more commercially oriented tourism. This has contributed to concerns about the environmental sustainability of tourism in remote coastal areas. Governments have increasingly been faced with the challenge of balancing ecological concerns with the pursuit of economic development. Adding to the complexity are the differing needs and demands of various segments of the tourism market all looking to enjoy particular places. Balancing the demands of campers, backpackers, package tourists and others in a single place is often wrought with conflict. This study explores some of these issues in a remote coastal area in Western Australia. The Ningaloo coast has evolved from a difficult to reach destination used by a small number of campers, to one of Western Australia's most popular tourist destinations in just two decades. The thesis examines the factors underlying the growth and change of tourism in the region, tracing its evolution from a few small rudimentary campsites to proposals for large scale resort developments. Of particular interest to this thesis is how planning and policy processes aim to address developmental pressures and resource use/planning conflicts. Additionally, this study provides an insight into the issues facing the informal, long term camper as the traditional segment of Ningaloo's tourism market. It examines how current planning and policy for the Ningaloo coastline affects this group by reshaping traditional tourism use of the area.
