A Conductor's Guide to Two Cantatas by Philipp Heinrich Erlebach: Ich will Wasser giessen and Christus ist mein Leben

Sparfeld, Tobin Christopher 17 December 2009 (has links)
Philipp Heinrich Erlebach (1657-1714) was a court composer and music director in the central German town of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. During his day, Erlebach mastered nearly every genre of his era and turned the court of Rudolstadt into a sophisticated musical center. Unfortunately, a fire which consumed the Rudolstadt court in 1735 destroyed many of his sacred and secular manuscripts. Erlebach had a marked influence on the development of the sacred cantata. He was one of the first composers to write a cycle of texts by Erdmann Neumeister, the earliest cycle of Neumeister cantatas that survives. This study provides background and analysis of two cantatas, Ich will Wasser giessen and Christus ist mein Leben, and examines how this music can be performed today in a historically informed, logistically viable fashion.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR CHOOSING AND COMBINING INSTRUMENTS IN BASSO CONTINUO GROUP AND OBBLIGATO INSTRUMENTAL FORCES FOR PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED SACRED CANTATAS OF JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH

Park, Chungwon January 2010 (has links)
As the core of virtually all vocal and instrumental composition in the Baroque music, the basso continuo group had an extremely important role in the sacred cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). During the Baroque period, the choice of instruments was sometimes indicated by the composer, but frequently the performers had to determine which instruments were most appropriate for the particular environment and context of the music. When performing the sacred cantatas of J.S. Bach, the conductor must identify and make decisions regarding the choices and combinations of instruments for both figured and sustained continuo part. In some cases the conductor may even consider changing continuo instrument(s), movement by movement, in a cantata in which a significant shift occurs in the texture, orchestration, or dramatic function of singer's line. Since Bach's cantatas are an encyclopedia of Baroque musical style, and models of compositional techniques of the time, understanding the cantatas is a practical and effective way to gain understanding regarding his other compositions. These cantatas also present musical challenges and rewards to choirs and orchestras. In an attempt to achieve a greater understanding and establish guidelines, I will examine and propose six principles and parameters regarding choices and combinations of basso continuo instruments and obbligato instruments, examining a variety of movement types from six different sacred cantatas of J.S. Bach ; Christ lag in Todesbanden, BWV 4; Ich hatte viel bekümmernis, BWV 21; Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ, BWV 67; Herr, gehe nicht ins Gericct mit deinem Knecht, BWV 105; Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, BWV 140, and Erschallet, ihr Lieder, BWV 172.This study will include:1) A critical review of performance practice and historical evidence regarding the basso continuo part in Bach's sacred cantatas2) Using "4 TAV System: Six Parameters" performance considerations and suggestions for instrument choices in basso continuo group for chorus, solo, recitative, and chorale movements in the selected cantatas3) Examinations and suggestions of several possible choices and combinations of basso continuo instruments

Seven Last Words from the Cross (1993) - James MacMillan

Ordás, Manuel Alejandro January 2008 (has links)
Seven Last Words from the Cross (1993) - Primera audición argentina Cantata sacra para solistas, coro y orquesta de cuerdas I. A Performance Guide to John Carter's Cantata

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this research paper is to discuss John Carter's Cantata, the musical development of this composition, and provide a brief history of this African American musician and composer. Presently, there exists very little research regarding Carter's life and compositions. From a musician's perspective, this paper discusses the challenges of singing and performing the Cantata for future performers and provides a reference for their preparation. This project also examines John Carter's musical style and analyzes the structure of the Cantata. African-American folk songs were an inspiration to Carter's compositions, especially this particular work. As an African-American, his life and background played a role in his inspiration of composition. With borrowed music, he reveals a basic truth about this period of American history; how the lives of slaves influenced in the development of this particular genre. Additionally, John Carter's style of composition is examined, including the application of jazz and modal scales in his Cantata. Performance practice is examined for both the singer and pianist in a way that best represents the composer's original and unique intent. From vocal safety to breath control, a singer may find several challenges when performing this eclectic piece. This paper provides a guide for singers. A brief overview of the pianist's role in the Cantata is also included. Characteristic words of the African-American vernacular found in Carter's Cantata are briefly discussed and identified (i.e. "them" vs. "dem"). It is essential that any performer, both beginning and advanced, should have a proper understanding of the concepts that Carter had so carefully crafted. This paper endeavors to provide a deeper sense of understanding to what Carter had intended for both the performer and the listener. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012

The historical development and a structural analysis of the Yellow River piano concerto

Bai, Shan 08 July 2008 (has links)
The Yellow River Piano Concerto was adapted from the famous Yellow River Cantata, a grand choral work composed by Xian Xinghai in 1939, during the Japanese invasion of China. It is a very famous and important work in China and exhibits strong nationalistic characteristics. The Cantata inspired the entire Chinese nation during their defense against the largest and most brutal genocide in human history. It has since become a symbol of heroism and solidarity of all Chinese people around the world. The Yellow River Piano Concerto was composed by a group of Chinese composer-pianists in 1969 led by Yin Chengzong. All the biographies of the composers of both the Cantata and the Piano Concerto are supplied in this dissertation. The Piano Concerto consists of four movements: The Song of The Yellow River Boatmen, Ode to the Yellow River, The Wrath of the Yellow River and Defend the Yellow River. Each movement has been analyzed in terms of structure. Music examples are provided to assist in the understanding of the work. / Dissertation (MMus (Performing Art))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Music / unrestricted
