Combinatorial Interpretations Of Generalizations Of Catalan Numbers And Ballot NumbersAllen, Emily 01 May 2014 (has links)
The super Catalan numbers T(m,n) = (2m)!(2n)!=2m!n!(m+n)! are integers which generalize the Catalan numbers. Since 1874, when Eugene Catalan discovered these numbers, many mathematicians have tried to find their combinatorial interpretation. This dissertation is dedicated to this open problem. In Chapter 1 we review known results on T (m,n) and their q-analog polynomials. In Chapter 2 we give a weighted interpretation for T(m,n) in terms of 2-Motzkin paths of length m+n2 and a reformulation of this interpretation in terms of Dyck paths. We then convert our weighted interpretation into a conventional combinatorial interpretation for m = 1,2. At the beginning of Chapter 2, we prove our weighted interpretation for T(m,n) by induction. In the final section of Chapter 2 we present a constructive combinatorial proof of this result based on rooted plane trees. In Chapter 3 we introduce two q-analog super Catalan numbers. We also define the q-Ballot number and provide its combinatorial interpretation. Using our q-Ballot number, we give an identity for one of the q-analog super Catalan numbers and use it to interpret a q-analog super Catalan number in the case m= 2. In Chapter 4 we review problems left open and discuss their difficulties. This includes the unimodality of some of the q-analog polynomials and the conventional combinatorial interpretation of the super Catalan numbers and their q-analogs for higher values of m.

Parking Functions And Generalized Catalan NumbersSchumacher, Paul R. 14 January 2010 (has links)
Since their introduction by Konheim and Weiss, parking functions have evolved
into objects of surprising combinatorial complexity for their simple definitions. First,
we introduce these structures, give a brief history of their development and give a
few basic theorems about their structure. Then we examine the internal structures of
parking functions, focusing on the distribution of descents and inversions in parking
functions. We develop a generalization to the Catalan numbers in order to count
subsets of the parking functions. Later, we introduce a generalization to parking
functions in the form of k-blocked parking functions, and examine their internal
structure. Finally, we expand on the extension to the Catalan numbers, exhibiting
examples to explore its internal structure. These results continue the exploration of
the deep structures of parking functions and their relationship to other combinatorial
objects.

Invariants of Polynomials Modulo Frobenius PowersDrescher, Chelsea 05 1900 (has links)
Rational Catalan combinatorics connects various Catalan numbers to the representation theory of rational Cherednik algebras for Coxeter and complex reflection groups. Lewis, Reiner, and Stanton seek a theory of rational Catalan combinatorics for the general linear group over a finite field. The finite general linear group is a modular reflection group that behaves like a finite Coxeter group. They conjecture a Hilbert series for a space of invariants under the action of this group using (q,t)-binomial coefficients. They consider the finite general linear group acting on the quotient of a polynomial ring by iterated powers of the irrelevant ideal under the Frobenius map. Often conjectures about reflection groups are solved by considering the local case of a group fixing one hyperplane and then extending via the theory of hyperplane arrangements to the full group. The Lewis, Reiner and Stanton conjecture had not previously been formulated for groups fixing a hyperplane. We formulate and prove their conjecture in this local case.

Generalizations of the Arcsine DistributionRasnick, Rebecca 01 May 2019 (has links)
The arcsine distribution looks at the fraction of time one player is winning in a fair coin toss game and has been studied for over a hundred years. There has been little further work on how the distribution changes when the coin tosses are not fair or when a player has already won the initial coin tosses or, equivalently, starts with a lead. This thesis will first cover a proof of the arcsine distribution. Then, we explore how the distribution changes when the coin the is unfair. Finally, we will explore the distribution when one person has won the first few flips.

No total, são exibidas 29 bijeções / Abstract: In this work, we study the sequence of Catalan Numbers, which appears as a solution of many counting problems involving trees, words, graphs and other combinatorial structures. Nowadays, about 200 different combinatorial interpretations of the Catalan Numbers are known and that motivates the study between them, i. e., the study between sets whose cardinality is given by the terms of this sequence. The main objective of our work is therefore to show bijections between these sets. In the beginning, we make a short historical introduction of the Catalan Numbers and define some ways to represent the sequence. After that, we show some classical bijections between sets counted by the Catalan Numbers. Additionally, we exhibit other bijections between sets involving several combinatorial objects. Altogether, 29 bijections are presented / Mestrado / Matematica Aplicada / Mestre em Matemática Aplicada

In this thesis, we study a morphism of mono"id $mu$ between the free mono"id on the alphabet of integers $nb$and the modular group $PSL_2(zb)$ considered as a mono"id, defined for all integer $a$by $mu(a)=begin{pmatrix} 0 & -1 1 & a+1 end{pmatrix}.$ The Catalan Numbers arised naturally in the study ofsubsets of the kernel of the morphism $mu$.Firstly, we introduce two rewriting systems, one on the finite alphabet ${0,1}$, and the other on the infinite alphabet of integers $nb$. We proove that bothof these rewriting systems defines a mono"id presentation of $PSL_2(zb)$ by generators and relations. On another note, we introduce the morphism of loop associated to the abelianised of the universal covering group of $PSL_2(zb)$, the group $B_3$ ofbraid group on $3$ strands. In two different contexts, the morphism of loop is associated to the number of "half-turns".Then, in the fourth and the fifth parts, we numerate subsets of the kernel of $mu_{|{0,1}}$ and of the kernel of $mu$,bi-graduated by the morphism of lengthand the morphism of loop. The sequences of Catalan numbers and other diagonals of the Catalan triangle come into the results.Lastly, we present the geometrical origin of this research : we detail the connection between our first aim, which was the study of convex integer polygones ofminimal area, and our interest for the mono"id generated by these particular matrices of $PSL_2(zb)$.
