Anticipating new media: A faceted classification of material types

Green, Rebecca, Fallgren, Nancy January 2007 (has links)
The emergence of new media types, many seemingly without counterparts in the non-digital world, challenges the readiness of existing knowledge organization schemes to accommodate them. A knowledge organization scheme based on a faceted analysis of existing classes of bibliographic materials is likely to accommodate new developments better than one based on a list of unanalyzed material types. The faceted analysis undertaken here, in which seven facets are recognized (content, generation of content, recording of content, publication/distribution, physical characteristics, perception/use, and relationships) shows the inadequacy of the traditional view of the bibliographic community of a fundamental distinction between content and carrier; interaction between content and carrier is common and enters into the characterization of material types. The facet analysis is validated by applying it to two new material types, wikis and blogs.

Moving Image Works and Manifestations

Yee, Martha M. January 1993 (has links)
Theoretical analysis of the concepts of work and manifestation for moving image materials was carried out, and both concepts were defined. Research was done on the frequency of occurrence of moving image manifestations, on the types of difference that can occur from one moving image manifestation to another, and on the kinds of visible indicators, accessible to catalogers, that are associated with these differences. It was found that continuity, i.e. intellectual and artistic content, varies frequently, 39 per cent of the time; an additional seven per cent of works have added subsidiary matter, and an additional 12 per cent of works have differences in language and sound track. In other words, a total of 58 per cent of the works sampled had at least one instance of difference in intellectual and artistic content between two items. Only eight per cent of the works in the sample were mentioned as having manifestations in standard reference sources such as Maltin. Visible indicators and physical format are very unreliable indicators of actual difference in intellectual and artistic content; 48 per cent of the time, visible indicators vary with no underlying difference in continuity; 23 per cent of the time, continuity varies with no difference in visible indicators. Length differences of three minutes or more are the most reliable indicators of actual difference in intellectual and artistic content. Of the titles with difference in continuity, 72 per cent of these manifestations were detectible by means of length difference. This corresponds to previous findings for books which indicate paging is the most reliable indicator of true differences in manifestation. Findings mean that catalogers need not create nearly as many separate records for the same work as they do under current practice. Fewer records for the same work would also benefit users, who could more easily select the most suitable manifestation of the work they seek if new records were made only for known differences in either intellectual and artistic content or in identification. Since catalogers cannot identify manifestation variation in two items that are no more than two minutes different in length, film scholars and preservationists must watch all available items representing a particular film work before they can be sure they are aware of all manifestation variations that may occur.

The establishment and development of Chinese cataloging standards in Taiwan since 1980 [in Chinese]

Cheng, Heng-Hsiung January 2006 (has links)
Text in Chinese. English abstract translated from Chinese. / The 1980s was a milestone decade in the history of libraries in Taiwan: computer technology began to be widely employed in libraries; collections began to be digitized; manual library operations were automated; in particular, the development of Chinese classification schemes, subject headings, and cataloging rules made tremendous progress. This paper highlights the achievements in Chinese cataloging rules made in Taiwan libraries since 1980. It describes the construction, features and applications of the Chinese cataloging rules in Taiwan, and discusses future challenges that Chinese cataloging faces and possible development strategies.

Curriculum-based Classification: A Case Study at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine Library

Solomon, Daniela January 2005 (has links)
This paper presents classification systems changes that Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM) Library considered necessary in order to organize its collections in ways more readily comprehensible to its users. Because the main purpose of classification is to arrange the materials in ways that facilitate access to information, the classification of the SCNM collections was changed to match more closely the curriculum structure at the College, and thus, to be closer to its users understanding. These changes have been made within areas where the differences between naturopathic and conventional medicine are most obvious, more precisely: diet therapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, physical medicine, botanical medicine, and environmental medicine. Naturopathic medicine uses a natural approach to health and healing. However, many consider naturopathic medicine pseudoscientific. One of the implications of this general attitude towards naturopathy is that within both the Library of Congress and the National Library of Medicine classification systems the naturopathic medicine presence seems to be a minimal afterthought. Although a steadily increasing interest in alternative health use by the general public is observable, both in general and in academic settings, the Library of Congress and the National Library of Medicine have been slow in making any changes in their subject headings and classification systems. The article focuses on changes made within three areas: botanical medicine, homeopathy, and nutrition and diet therapy. The spirit of this process is reflected by the Libraryâ s logo: â A Customized Information Service that Fits Your Natural Health Research Needs.â
