Batch soil adsorption and column transport studies of 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) in soils

The explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is currently a main ingredient in munitions; however the compound has failed to meet the new sensitivity requirements. The replacement compound being tested is 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN). DNAN is less sensitive to shock, high temperatures, and has good detonation characteristics. However, DNAN is more soluble than TNT, which can influence transport and fate behavior and thus bio-availability and human exposure potential. The objective of this study was to investigate the environmental fate and transport of DNAN in soil, with specific focus on sorption processes. Batch and column experiments were conducted using soils collected from military installations located across the United States. The soils were characterized for pH, electrical conductivity, specific surface area, cation exchange capacity, and organic carbon content. In the batch rate studies, change in DNAN concentration with time was evaluated using the first order equation, while adsorption isotherms were fitted using linear and Freundlich equations. Solution mass-loss rate coefficients ranged between 0.0002 h(-1) and 0.0068 h(-1). DNAN was strongly adsorbed by soils with linear adsorption coefficients ranging between 0.6 and 6.3 L g(-1), and Freundlich coefficients between 1.3 and 34 mg(1-n) L-n kg(-1). Both linear and Freundlich adsorption coefficients were positively correlated with the amount of organic carbon and cation exchange capacity of the soil, indicating that similar to TNT, organic matter and clay minerals may influence adsorption of DNAN. The results of the miscible-displacement column experiments confirmed the impact of sorption on retardation of DNAN during transport. It was also shown that under flow conditions DNAN transforms readily with formation of amino transformation products, 2-ANAN and 4-ANAN. The magnitudes of retardation and transformation observed in this study result in significant attenuation potential for DNAN, which would be anticipated to contribute to a reduced risk for contamination of ground water from soil residues.

Desenvolvimento de método para separação química de Gálio-67 pela técnica de difusão térmica / Development of method to chemical separation of gallium-67 by thermal diffusion technique

Radioisótopos de gálio são estudados e avaliados para aplicações médicas desde 1949. Nos últimos 50 anos 67Ga tem sido amplamente utilizado no diagnóstico de diversas patologias, incluindo lesões inflamatórias crônicas e agudas, bacterianas ou estéreis e diversos tipos de tumores. No Brasil 30% das clinicas que prestam serviços de Medicina Nuclear utilizam o Citrato de 67Ga com uma demanda de distribuição no IPEN-CNEN/SP de 37 GBq (1 Ci) por semana. O 67Ga apresenta meia-vida física de 3,26 dias (78 horas) e decai 100% por captura eletrônica para o 67Zn estável. Seu decaimento inclui a emissão de raios γ com energias de 93,3 keV (37%), 184,6 keV (20,4%), 300,2 keV (16,6%) e 888 keV (26%). No IPEN o 67Ga era produzido a partir da reação 68Zn(p, 2n)67Ga. Após a irradiação, o alvo era totalmente dissolvido em HCl concentrado e a solução percolada em resina catiônica DOWEX 50W-X8, 200-400 mesh, condicionada em HCl 10 mol L-1. Zinco, níquel e cobre eram eluídos em HCl 10 mol L-1 e o 67Ga em HCl 3,5 mol L-1. O produto final era obtido na forma de citrato de 67Ga. Este trabalho apresenta um método inédito, rápido, direto e eficiente de separação química e obtenção de 67GaCl3 a partir da difusão térmica (aquecimento do alvo) aliada à extração em ácido acético concentrado. A purificação foi realizada por cromatografia de troca iônica. Realizou-se a eletrodeposição do zinco natural em placas de cobre niquelado como substrato e os depósitos de zinco obtidos foram aderentes ao substrato, levemente brilhantes e uniformes. Os alvos foram irradiados com prótons de 26 MeV e corrente integrada de 10 μA.h. Após a irradiação, os alvos foram aquecidos a 300 °C por 2 horas e colocados em contato com ácido acético concentrado por 1 hora. O rendimento médio de extração de 67Ga obtido foi de (72±10)%. Esta solução foi evaporada e o resíduo foi retomado em NH4OH 0,5 mol L-1. O 67Ga foi purificado em resina catiônica Dowex 50WX8 em meio de NH4OH. A recuperação obtida foi de (98 ± 2) %, de 67Ga. O eluido foi evaporado e retomado em HCl 0,1 mol L-1. A pureza química foi verificada por ICP-OES encontrando-se (2 ± 1) μg mL -1 de zinco. As concentrações de ferro, cobre e níquel foram inferiores ao limite de detecção do método e aos limites de utilização de 67Ga. A pureza radionuclídica foi verificada por espectroscopia-γ utilizando um detector de germânio Hiper-Puro encontrando-se valor superior a (99,9%). Este método inédito permite a obtenção de 67Ga com alta pureza química, radioquímica e radionuclídica em condições de processamento menos agressivas e corrosivas que o método comumente utilizado. / Radioisotopes of gallium have been studied and evaluated for medical applications since 1949. Natural zinc electrodeposition was performed on nickel/copper plates as substrate and the zinc deposits were adherent to the substrate, slightly shiny and uniform. The targets were irradiated with 26 MeV protons and integrated current of 10 μA.h. After irradiation, the targets were heated at 300 °C for 2 hours and placed in contact with concentrated acetic acid for 1 hour. The average yield of extraction of 67Ga was (72 ± 10)%. This solution was evaporated and the residue was taken up in 0.5 mol L-1 NH4OH. The 67Ga was purified on cationic resin Dowex 50WX8 in NH4OH medium. The 67Ga recovery was (98 ± 2)%. This solution was evaporated and taken up in 0.1 mol L-1 HCl. The chemical purity was evaluated by ICP-OES that resulted in (2 ± 1) μg mL-1 of zinc. The concentration of iron, copper and nickel was lower than the detection limits and also than the utilization limits for 67Ga. The radionuclidic purity was greater than (99.9%). This method showed to be suitable to obtain high purity 67Ga in less aggressive chemical conditions than before.

In this context the present work was to study the effects of substitution of mineral nitrogen by chicken litter in oat and corn in succession and chemical characteristics of soil. Two experiments were conducted during the period from May 2009 to March 2010 in Oxisol area located at the experimental farm of the State University of Paraná, municipality of Rondon. The first test was conducted under a randomized complete blocks with eight treatments obtained from different combinations of chicken manure (applied in oat) and mineral N fertilization (applied in corn) and four replications. We studied the production of dry matter and nutrient accumulation in the straw of the oat crop, and yield components and yield of corn. In the second trial, after the corn harvest, we studied the chemical properties of soil under the design of randomized blocks in factorial scheme 8x3, with the eight combinations of fertilizer used in the first trial related to three depths of soil sampling (0 -5, 5-10 and 10-15 cm). Larger quantities of poultry litter in oat provided higher dry matter production and accumulation of N. All fertilization studied provided satisfactory average productivity for corn (8569 kg ha-1). The soil properties were changed with the use of poultry litter associated with mineral N fertilization. There was a decrease in pH, Ca, Mg, and increased the P, potential acidity, the cation exchange capacity and exchangeable Al with increasing proportions of poultry litter in relation to mineral N fertilization / A busca constante pela sustentabilidade dos sistemas de produção têm direcionado as pesquisas à buscar alternativas aos problemas oriundos da intensificação dos sistemas produtivos. Nesse contexto o presente trabalho teve como objetivo estudar os efeitos da substituição da adubação nitrogenada mineral pela cama de frango na cultura da aveia e do milho em sucessão e nos atributos químicos do solo. Foram conduzidos dois ensaios durante o período de maio de 2009 à março de 2010 em área de Latossolo Vermelho eutroférrico localizada na fazenda experimental da Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná, município de Marechal Cândido Rondon. O primeiro ensaio foi conduzido sob o delineamento em blocos ao acaso com seis tratamentos obtidos a partir de combinações de quantidades crescentes de cama de frango aplicadas na aveia combinadas com a adubação nitrogenada mineral de cobertura aplicada no milho e quatro repetições. Estudou-se a produção de massa seca e acúmulo de nitrogênio pela cultura da aveia, e os componentes de produção e produtividade da cultura do milho. No segundo ensaio, após a colheita do milho, estudou-se os atributos químicos do solo sob o delineamento em blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 6X3, com as seis combinações de adubação utilizadas no primeiro ensaio associadas a três profundidades de amostragem do solo (0-5; 5-10 e 10-15 cm). A aplicação de cama de frango na cultura da aveia propiciou aumento da produção de massa seca e acúmulo de maior quantidade de N, enquanto a substituição de parte da adubação nitrogenada mineral pela cama de frango elevou os índices de produtividade da cultura do milho. Os atributos químicos do solo foram alterados pelos fatores estudados, ocorrendo a elevação dos teores de P, MO, Al trocável e acidez potencial, e redução do pH, K, Ca, Mg, soma de bases e saturação por bases.

Detection and Quantification of Expansive Clay Minerals in Geologically-Diverse Texas Aggregate Fines

Expansive clay mineral contamination of road aggregate materials in Texas is a persistent problem. Hydrous layer silicate minerals - particularly smectites - in concretes are associated with decreased strength and durability in Portland cement and asphalt concretes. The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) and Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) evaluated the methylene blue adsorption test for its potential to identify and estimate quantities of expansive clays in aggregate stockpiles. Clay mineral quantification was completed for 27 geologically-diverse aggregate materials from Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) of separated clays on glass was conducted, and NEWMOD was utilized to model the resulting diffraction patterns. Methylene blue adsorption (MBA) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of clay fractions (< 2µm) and -40 mesh screenings (< 400 µm) were determined for most aggregates. Many of the aggregates exhibited significant quantities of expansive clay minerals such as smectite, which are linked to deleterious performance properties in concretes. While the majority of aggregates were derived from crushed limestone or calcareous river gravel parent materials, severalexhibited uncommon origins and unusual clay mineralogy. Due to the relatively low number of aggregates tested and diverse geological origins of the different aggregates,it proved difficult to formalize any conclusions abouttrendsbetweenthedifferent aggregate performance properties.

PERFORMANCE OF GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINERS IN COVER, SUBSURFACE BARRIER, AND BASAL LINER APPLICATIONS

The use of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) as (i) covers for arsenic-rich gold mine tailings and landfills, (ii) subsurface barrier for migration of hydrocarbons in the Arctic, and (iii) basal liner for sewage treatment lagoons were examined. After 4 years in field and laboratory experiments, it was found that best cover configuration above gold mine tailings might include a layer of GCL product with polymer-enhanced bentonite and a geofilm-coated carrier geotextile serving above the tailings under ≥ 0.7 m overburden. However, acceptable performance could be achieved with using a standard GCL with untreated bentonite provided that there is a minimum of 0.7 m of cover soil above the GCL. When GCL samples were exhumed from experimental landfill test cover with complete replacement of sodium in the bentonite with divalent cations in the adjacent soil, it was observed that the (i) hydraulic head across the GCLs, (ii) size of the needle-punched bundles, and (iii) structure of the bentonite can all significantly affect the value of the inferred in-situ hydraulic conductivity measured at the laboratory. The higher the hydraulic head and the larger the size of the needle-punched bundles, the higher the likelihood of internal erosion/structural change of bentonite at bundles that will cause a preferential flow for liquids to occur. A key practical implication was that GCLs can perform effectively as a single hydraulic barrier in covers provided that the water head above the GCL kept low. The hydraulic performance of a GCL in the Arctic was most affected by the location within the soil profile relative to the typical groundwater level with the highest increase in the hydraulic conductivity (by 1-4 orders of magnitude) for GCL below the water table. However, because the head required for jet fuel to pass through the GCL was higher than that present under field conditions, there was no evidence of jet fuel leakage through the barrier system. Multiscale Modeling of Molecular Sieving in LTA-type Zeolites : From the Quantum Level to the Macroscopic

LTA-type zeolites with narrow window apertures coinciding with the approximate size of small gaseous molecules such as CO2 and N2 are interesting candidates for adsorbents with swing adsorption technologies due to their molecular sieving capabilities and otherwise attractive properties. These sieving capabilities are dependent on the energy barriers of diffusion between the zeolite pores, which can be fine-tuned by altering the framework composition. An ab initio level of theory is necessary to accurately describe specific gas-zeolite interaction and diffusion properties, while it is desirable to predict the macroscopic scale diffusion for industrial applications. Hence, a multiscale modeling approach is necessary to describe the molecular sieving phenomena exhaustively. In this thesis, we use several different modeling methods on different length and time scales to describe the diffusion driven uptake and separation of CO2 and N2 in Zeolite NaKA. A combination of classical force field based modeling methods are used to show the importance of taking into account both thermodynamic, as well as, kinetic effects when modeling gas uptake in narrow pore zeolites where the gas diffusion is to some extent hindered. For a more detailed investigation of the gas molecules’ pore-to-pore dynamics in the material, we present a procedure to compute the free energy barriers of diffusion using spatially constrained ab initio Molecular Dynamics. With this procedure, we seek to identify diffusion rate determining local properties of the Zeolite NaKA pores, including the Na+-to-K+ exchange at different ion sites and the presence of additional CO2 molecules in the pores. This energy barrier information is then used as input for the Kinetic Monte Carlo method, allowing us to simulate and compare these and other effects on the diffusion driven uptake using a realistic powder particle model on macroscopic timescales. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 4: Manuscript.</p>
