São Paulo na disputa pelo passado : o Monumento à Independência, de Ettore Ximenes / São Paulo in the dispute for the past: the \"Monument to Independence\", by Ettore Ximenes

Michelli Cristine Scapol Monteiro 25 April 2017 (has links)
This thesis analyses the process of establishing the Monument to the Independence of Brazil as a \"place of memory\" representing Brazilian political emancipation. Created within the context of the centennial celebrations of the 1822 Independence, this sculpture was central to São Paulo\'s festivities, and proved to be a representation of the city\'s project to assert itself as the symbolic center of the country, in an overt dispute with the city of Rio de Janeiro for the creation of an official history of Brazil. The history of this piece was retraced back to the earliest intentions of erecting a monument in the Ipiranga district - during the Imperial period - up to its dedication in 1923. The selection process of this sculpture, which was carried out publicly, is herein analyzed, while also examining the debates engendered by its official announcement, its contending projects, and the criticisms published in the press regarding the various projects. The election of a design by Ettore Ximenes - a widely renowned Italian artist - is deemed as a strategy to confer distinction and fame, in national and international levels, to this new monument in São Paulo. The themes found in this set of sculptures and reliefs are shown to be correlated and synergized with the Museu Paulista exhibition - set up by historian Affonso Taunay - for the 1922 celebrations. This convergence of compositions was favored by the fact that Taunay acted simultaneously as member of the public selection\'s judging committee and as director of the aforementioned museum. In addition to the sculpture and to the historical exhibition, the project of aggrandizing and promoting the Ipiranga hill also included creating a monumental urban axis, filled with sculptures and gardens which would connect this historical site to the city center. However, the celebratory intentions of the paulista elite were marred by the delayed construction of the monument and other works connected to it - unfinished in 1922 -, and by the limited repercussion engendered by the inauguration of the Monument to the Independence of Brazil in local and international media.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodrigo Marcondes Rocha1.pdf: 8501462 bytes, checksum: ed5ba05f6c5d0d1512b79237c9a8d232 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-02-22 / The theme of the present master s dissertation stems from the interest in the character and in the work of the German architect Walter Gropius (1883-1969) and it focuses on his coming to Brazil in January of 1954, when he participated in the Exposição Internacional de Arquitetura (event which was part of the II Bienal Internacional de Artes de São Paulo which coincided with the celebrations of the IV Centennial of the city s foundation), he got São Paulo s architecture award, in his first and unique edition he delivered an inaugural speech in the IV Congresso Brasileiro de Arquitetos and visited Rio de Janeiro and Petrópolis. In order to do so, archives of Fundação Bienal and publications and period periodicals were consulted, besides the relevant bibliography. Additional and fundamental information about the IV Congresso Brasileiro de Arquitetos were also recovered directly from the archives kept by the Paulista section of Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil (IAB-SP). Hence, some valuable information were also recovered about the presence of Gropius in Brazil, aiming at complementing the barely spread content about this constant happening in the existing historiography, discussing frictions and proximities within the period in which Walter Gropius was in Brazil.

Heunis, Victoria Regina 18 November 2008 (has links)
ENGLISH : The symbolic ox-wagon trek that started on 8 August 1938 at the Van Riebeeck statue in Cape Town and ended with the foundation stone laying of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria on 16 December 1938, contributed to the revival of Afrikaner Nationalism and the forming of an Afrikaner identity. During the Voortrekker Centenary celebrations in 1938 the wagons visited more than five hundred towns where the inhabitants enthusiastically celebrated the event with historical pageants and processions, church services, speeches and usually stone cairns were layed or a monument or memorial was unveiled to commemorate the occasion. The main aim of this study was to compile a detailed database about these often unknown monuments and memorials that were erected all over South Africa in 1938 and to document them as far as possible. The second aim was to evaluate and discuss the relevance, cultural significance and preservation of these unmovable heritage structures in a post-apartheid South Africa. / Dissertation (MHCS)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Historical and Heritage Studies / unrestricted

Cusson, Jean-Christophe 06 1900 (has links)
This mémoire aims to show that media space, in times of commemoration, is a privileged place for historians who want to capture the dynamics of a community’s memory. Our case study is the media coverage of the centenary of the First World War through the lens of The Guardian, Le Monde and Die Süeddeutsche Zeitung. We analysed in these newspapers the press coverage from June 2014 to July 2017 in the online sections First world war, Centenaire 14-18 and Erster Weltkrieg. This study uses an operative definition of collective memory that allows us to understand the necessity, in the history of memory field, to study journalism not simply as an archive, but also as a discursive space where various complex representations of the past meet and communicate in order to redefine themselves. This discursive space has two points of junction: Practiced history and “mythistory”. The dynamics of this space have been studied for each publication in this research. First, we identify the major historical configurations of the Great War, the role of historians in the coverage, and try to see to which extent these configurations are expressed in the three newspapers studied. Finally, the commemorative intentions of the newspapers are identified and then tested through a study of news-flow and an analysis of the lexical fields of the respective media coverage.
