Leveraging Software-Defined Radio for a Scalable Wide-band Wireless Channel Measurement SystemJamison, James 01 January 2018 (has links)
Wireless channel characterization is important for determining both the requirements for a wireless system and its resulting reliability. Wireless systems are becoming ever more pervasive and thus are expected to operate in increasingly more cluttered environments. While these devices may be fixed in location, the channel is still far from ideal due to multipath. Under such conditions, it is desirable to have a means of taking wireless channel measurements in a low-cost and distributed manner, which is not always possible using typical channel measurement equipment.
This thesis leverages a software-defined radio (SDR) platform to perform wideband wireless channel measurements. Specifically, the system can measure the scalar frequency response of a wireless channel in a distributed manner and provides measurements with an average mean-squared error of 0.018 % σ and a median error not exceeding 0.631 dB when compared to measurements taken with a vector network analyzer. This accuracy holds true in a highly multipath environment, with a measurement range of ~40 dB. The system is also capable of scaling to multiple wireless links which will be measured simultaneously (up to three links are demonstrated). After validating the measurement system, a measurement campaign is undertook using the system in a highly multipath environment to demonstrate a possible application of the system.

The purpose of the design is to have a best possible radiation patterns and reflection loss of our antenna. Conical monopole is chosen and it is simulated and changed to get the best possible parameters. Two prototypes are manufactured with mechanical changes applied and their parameters measured. Finished antenna is used for experimental channel measurement.

A Physical Hash for Preventing and Detecting Cyber-Physical Attacks in Additive Manufacturing SystemsBrandman, Joshua Erich 22 June 2017 (has links)
This thesis proposes a new method for detecting malicious cyber-physical attacks on additive manufacturing (AM) systems. The method makes use of a physical hash, which links digital data to the manufactured part via a disconnected side-channel measurement system. The disconnection ensures that if the network and/or AM system become compromised, the manufacturer can still rely on the measurement system for attack detection. The physical hash takes the form of a QR code that contains a hash string of the nominal process parameters and toolpath. It is manufactured alongside the original geometry for the measurement system to scan and compare to the readings from its sensor suite. By taking measurements in situ, the measurement system can detect in real-time if the part being manufactured matches the designer's specification. A proof-of-concept validation was realized on a material extrusion machine. The implementation was successful and demonstrated the ability of this method to detect the existence (and absence) of malicious attacks on both process parameters and the toolpath.
A case study for detecting changes to the toolpath is also presented, which uses a simple measurement of how long each layer takes to build. Given benchmark readings from a 30x30 mm square layer created on a material extrusion system, several modifications were able to be detected. The machine's repeatability and measurement technique's accuracy resulted in the detection of a 1 mm internal void, a 2 mm scaling attack, and a 1 mm skewing attack. Additionally, for a short to moderate length build of an impeller model, it was possible to detect a 0.25 mm change in the fin base thickness.
A second case study is also presented wherein dogbone tensile test coupons were manufactured on a material extrusion system at different extrusion temperatures. This process parameter is an example of a setting that can be maliciously modified and have an effect on the final part strength without the operator's knowledge. The performance characteristics (Young's modulus and maximum stress) were determined to be statistically different at different extrusion temperatures (235 and 270 °C). / Master of Science / Additive Manufacturing (AM, also known as 3D printing) machines are cyber-physical systems and are therefore vulnerable to malicious attacks that can cause physical damage to the parts being manufactured or even to the machine itself. This thesis proposes a new method for detecting that an AM system has been hacked. Attacks are identified via a series of measurements taken by a measurement system that is disconnected from the main network. The disconnection ensures that if the network and/or AM system are hacked, the manufacturer can still rely on the measurement system for attack detection. The proposed method uses a physical hash to transfer information to the disconnected measurement system. This physical hash takes the form of a QR code and stores in it the nominal process parameters and toolpath of the build. It is manufactured alongside the original geometry for the measurement system to scan and compare to the readings from its sensor suite. By taking measurements in real-time, the measurement system can detect if the part being manufactured matches the designer’s specification. A proof-of-concept of the proposed method was realized on a common AM system. The implementation was successful and demonstrated the ability of this method to detect the existence of a malicious attack.
A case study for detecting changes to the toolpath is also proposed using the simple measurement of how long each layer takes to build. Given benchmark readings of a part manufactured on the same technology as the proof-of-concept implementation, several modifications were able to be detected. The attack types tested were the insertion of an internal void, scaling the part, and skewing the part. A second case study is also presented where components were manufactured at different extrusion temperatures. By measuring the force required to break the parts, it was determined that temperature has an effect on the final part strength. This confirmed that malicious attacks targeting extrusion temperature are a plausible threat, and that the parameter should be measured in the proposed system.

Super-Resolution TOA Estimation with Diversity Techniques for Indoor Geolocation ApplicationsLi, Xinrong 29 April 2003 (has links)
Recently, there are great interests in the location-based applications and the location-awareness of mobile wireless systems in indoor areas, which require accurate location estimation in indoor environments. The traditional geolocation systems such as the GPS are not designed for indoor applications, and cannot provide accurate location estimation in indoor environments. Therefore, there is a need for new location finding techniques and systems for indoor geolocation applications. In this thesis, a wide variety of technical aspects and challenging issues involved in the design and performance evaluation of indoor geolocation systems are presented first. Then the TOA estimation techniques are studied in details for use in indoor multipath channels, including the maximum-likelihood technique, the MUSIC super-resolution technique, and diversity techniques as well as various issues involved in the practical implementation. It is shown that due to the complexity of indoor radio propagation channels, dramatically large estimation errors may occur with the traditional techniques, and the super-resolution techniques can significantly improve the performance of the TOA estimation in indoor environments. Also, diversity techniques, especially the frequency-diversity with the CMDCS, can further improve the performance of the super-resolution techniques.

This diploma thesis studies the theory side channels, simple and differential analysis, and types of attacks on the side channel, which may be run against the cryptographic system. The thesis explains the principles of side channel attack on a possible defense against them. The second part of the thesis describes experimental work created, its individual components and their functions. The findings builds custom solutions attack the electromagnetic side channel using electromagnetic probes and the workplace equipment developed for this task. The final part of the thesis is devoted to the description of the implemented algorithm, a description of measurement, measurement results and possible modifications of algorithms implemented in the microcontroller for full automation of the attack on the device, against which the attack was conducted.

Measurement and Modelling of a Free-Space Optical Link and In-Field OFDM ExperimentMostafa, Ayman 04 1900 (has links)
<p>Free-space optical (FSO) communication is a potential technology for last-mile applications. Key advantages are the unlicensed spectrum, high transmission rates, and inherent security. Moreover, Radio-over-FSO (RoFSO) allows seamless integration between the incompatible radio frequency (RF) and optical networks. Such advantages qualify FSO systems to take a front seat in next-generation broadband communication networks. However, the main challenge for FSO systems is the performance degradation imposed by the atmospheric attenuation and turbulence. To exploit the advantages of FSO systems, accurate and computationally-efficient channel models are required. This thesis represents in-field experimental work related to FSO channel measurement as well as the transmission of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) over the FSO channel. A 1.87-km FSO link installed at McMaster University is employed. A high-speed field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based digitizer board is used as the underlying hardware platform for interface with the link. A system-on-three-FPGAs is implemented to act as a universal transceiver for signals composed using MATLAB. A new technique is developed for conducting the FSO channel measurement. An optical signal intensity-modulated by a high frequency sinusoid is transmitted. The received signal undergoes a fast-Fourier transform (FFT) to filter out a large portion of the interfering noise providing more accurate measurements. Fitting with the log-normal distribution is investigated. A finite-state Markov model is also derived and its accuracy is verified by the simulation results. The first realization of an in-field OFDM over FSO transmission system is implemented and tested over the link. The received signal is investigated on the symbol level and constellation diagrams are visualized. Transmission rates up to 300 Mbps are achieved with average symbol-error rate (SER) on the order of 10<sup>-6</sup>.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Previous issue date: 2014-08-22 / Esta tese discute a medição e a caracterização das redes de distribuição de energia elétrica de baixa tensão (RDE-BT) e externa (outdoor) como meio de comunicação de dados para sistemas power line communication (PLC). São apresentados e discutidos diversos parâmetros obtidos a partir de uma campanha de medição realizada na RDE-BT de uma concessionária brasileira. Dentre os parâmetros analisados destacam-se o tempo de coerência, banda de coerência, espalhamento do atraso, comprimento da resposta ao impulso do canal e capacidade do canal, quando se considera as bandas de frequências de 1,7 a 30 MHz, 1,7 a 50 MHz e 1,7 a 100 MHz. As análises estatísticas evidenciam o potencial da rede de energia elétrica como meio de comunicação e discute os limites dessa potencialidade. Além disso, são propostos modelos de densidade espectral de potência dos ruídos, caracterização esparsa de canais PLC e proposto um modelo para geração de canais PLC variantes no tempo, cujo tempo de coerência entre as realizações dos canais é controlado. A estimação de canais PLC é apresentada como uma oportunidade de aplicação das técnicas de amostragem compressiva. Os resultados relacionados com as modelagens propostas constituem um ferramental de grande utilidade para projetar e analisar o desempenho de sistemas PLC. / This dissertation aims at discussing the measurement and characterization of outdoor electric power grid of low voltage as communication medium (power line communication - PLC). Statistical analyses carried out on several parameters such as average channel gain, coherence time, coherence bandwidth, delay spread, length of the channel impulse response, and channel capacity, when it is considered the frequency bands from 1.7 to 30 MHz, from 1.7 up to 50 MHz, and from 1.7 up to 100 MHz, are presented. These analyses reveal the circumstances in which outdoor and low-voltage electric power grids can be advantageous to support a reliable and efficient PLC system operation. Moreover, power spectral density models of additive noise and sparse representation of PLC channels are proposed. Also, a PLC time-varying channels model generator that makes use of coherence time is introduced. The proposed model generator, which is validated with measured PLC channels, is an effective tool to carry out performance analysis of PLC systems. Finally, PLC channel estimation is highlighted as an opportunity for the application of compressive sampling-based techniques. The use of traditional OFDM - based channel estimation techniques and the ones based on compressive sensing gives some directions for advancing channel estimation techniques for PLC channels.

Disertační práce je zaměřena na měření a modelování kanálu uvnitř a vně vozidla pro komunikaci a lokalizaci. Pro účely vytvoření integrovaného inteligentního dopravního systému ITS (Intelligent transportation system) je důležitý odhad vlastnosti kanálů pro vnitřní a venkovní scénáře. Za tímto účelem je vhodné provést řadu činností, které jsou obsahem disertační práce: Simulace fyzické vrstvy 802.11p, její srovnávání s 802.11a, měření kanálu pro různé scénáře pro 802.11p a pro širokopásmový systém (UWB), vytvoření modelů kanálů pro 802.11p a UWB a výzkum vlastností lokalizace založené na měření v pásmu UWB. Výzkum komunikace vozidla s okolím založená na IEEE 802.11p standardu. Jedním z cílů disertační práce je ukázat rozdíly mezi standardy fyzické vrstvy IEEE 802.11a a IEEE 802.11p prostřednictvím simulace s použitím modelu kanálu HIPERPLAN/2. V práci je uvedena simulace přenosu signálu 802.11p kanálem ITU-R M.1225 s odlišným zpožděním a středním výkonem (pro chodce a vozidla). Vliv kanálu na signál je analyzován za použití simulace v prostředí MATLABu pomocí vyhodnocení chybovosti. Určení vlastností kanálů v kmitočtovém pásmu 5,8 GHz pro standard IEEE 802.11p a UWB. Experimenty byly prováděny pro vnitřní a vnější prostředí vozidla. Bylo zjištěno, že pro protokol 802.11p může být trend (dlouhodobý vývoj) profilu PDP (power delay profile) nejlépe aproximován pomocí modelu obsahujícího dvě klesající exponenciální funkce, na rozdíl od Saleh-Valenzuelova (S-V) modelu, který je více vhodný pro UWB systémy pracující v pásmu 3 až 11 GHz. Vytvoření odpovídající impulzní odezvy (CIR) s využitím trendu PDP. Informace o CIR byla použita pro simulaci 802.11p za účelem vyhodnocení chybovosti při použití Ricianova modelu. Výsledky odhadu BER ukazují vhodnost protokolu pro vnitřní a vnější prostředí bezdrátových aplikací. Výsledky simulací dále ukazují, že se chybovost zásadně nemění a proto je možné určit střední křivku BER pro celou sadu změřených dat. Určení vlivu malé změny polohy antény na vlastnosti kanálu. Práce ukazuje náhodnost parametrů UWB kanálu pro malé změny polohy antény okolo vozidla, zaparkovaného v podzemní garáži. Ztráty šířením jsou monotónně rostoucí se vzdáleností, avšak náhodně se mění v závislosti na úhlu a výšce antén, a proto je vyhodnocení vzdálenosti pomocí síly signálu pro tyto scénáře nevhodné. Na druhé straně může být pro spolehlivé určení vzdálenosti bez ohledu na úhel nebo výšku antény použita doba příchodu prvního svazku. Ověření vlivu změn konfigurace kanálu na parametry S-V modelu. Práce demonstruje závislost parametrů Saleh-Valenzuela modelu v na vzdálenosti a výšce antén, avšak ukazuje, že jejich průměrné hodnoty jsou blízké IEEE 802.15.3 standardu. Ověření možnosti lokalizace pomocí metody TOA (time of arrival). Vzdálenost mezi anténami byla určena z profilu PDP s využitím lineární závislosti vzdálenosti na zpoždění. Souřadnice vysílací antény byly nalezeny pomocí dvou přijímacích antén pomocí 2-D lokalizační techniky TOA. Porovnání vypočtených souřadnic s původními vykazuje chybu menší než 6%, což ukazuje vhodnost navrženého přístupu pro lokalizaci vozidel.
