Experiments on the colonization of artificial substrates by stream benthos were conducted in upper Chingmei Stream, Taiwan. The artificial substrates were colonized by stream benthos for periods of 3, 6 12, 21, 30 and 42 days.The two experiments were designed for different purposes. Experiment I from December 15, 1990 to January 29, 1991 investigated the colonization patterns of stream benthos at two sites: a polluted site caused by coal mining activities (Site 1) and a recovery site further downstream of the polluted site (Site 2). Experiment II from March 14, 1991 to April 28, 1991 tested the effect of two different sizes of substrate (cobble and gravel) on the colonization patterns of stream benthos at Site 2. In Experiment I, the total number of individuals and taxa were significantly affected by exposure period of experimental substrates and sites which indicate the occurrence of succession and the detrimental effect of coal mining activities on the benthic community. At Site 1, only Caenis sp., Euphaea sp. and Chironomidae occurred on all sampling dates and were abundant. The other taxa may just continue to drift away from the site. The chironomid larvae were most abundant. They accounted for over 90% of the colonizing individuals from day 12 to day 42. At Site 2, Baetis spA and Chironomidae were most abundant. They accounted for over 80% during the experiment, except on day 21. The relative abundance shifted from Baetis sp.A to Chironomidae with an increase in colonization time. Association analysis was performed on the abundance of taxa pairs within the same functional feeding group at Site 2. The results suggest that filter-feeders and predators have concordant colonization patterns. The relationship between taxa and abundance at the two sites also was tested by lognormal distribution to determine the degree of equilibrium of the community. In Experiment II, the substratum types influenced only the total number of individuals colonizing baskets. The gravel substrate provides more surface area for stream benthos and supports more individuals. Baetis sp.A and chironomid larvae were abundant; they accounted for over 84% of the individuals from day 6 to 42 on both gravel and cobble. The chironomid larvae comprised 36% of the fauna on the gravel substrate and 35 - 79% of the fauna on the cobble substrate. The results of association analysis on the abundance of taxa pairs within the same functional feeding group showed that there were more taxa pairs with significant associations on cobble than on gravel. The negatively significant associations also occurred more on the cobble substrate. This indicates that biological interactions may be important in determining the development of community on the cobble substrate. Disturbance caused by floods influenced the colonization patterns, especially on the gravel substrate. It reset the artificial substrates back to earlier conditions. This study only suggests that competition may occur in the subtropical Taiwanese stream and further experimentation is needed to demonstrate whether competition occurs. / Graduation date: 1992

The following pages comprise a translation of the whose sanskrit title was presumably the apramanartha sutra from the 'Yuan' Edition of 1290 A.D., together with an introduction by liu Ch'iu . It was first translated from the sanskrit into Chinese by Dharmagstayadas, a Buddhist monk from North Central India, with the help of Hui Piao, In 485 A.D. La the Wu Tang mountains. The Sanskrit version is not avallable, while there are known to be four Chinese editions of the sutra. They are the (Kao-Ll RAtston 1115 A.D.), 2舊宋本 (the Old Sung Idition 1104-1148 A.D.), (the Yuan Edition 1290 A.D.), and the Ming Idition 1601 A,D.). Although the pre- sent translation was based on the Yuas text, with which the translators have been faniliar for many years, 1t has been compared throughout with the Kao-Ii Idition (Taisbo 276), and an appendix of the variations is added at the end.

Cheng Ching-wen has a wide variety of interests in writing, including novel, short story, fairy tale, literature, political review, miscellaneous writing and translation of Western literary works. Cheng has been engaged in writing for fifty years and accomplished a tremendous amount of quality work. This thesis would focus on three of Cheng¡¦s novels. Structure of the thesis would be the first part which has been finalized after several modifications. Chapter One Explain the reason why to choose Cheng¡¦s novels as the topic of this thesis. Chapter Two Study the writer¡¦s life and creation background. Analyze how his special growing background, learning process, friends and reading preference impact on his writing. Also, discuss the relationship between his inspirations and his works from the three geographic environments where he grew up. Chapter Three Discuss the origin of Cheng¡¦s creation ideas. Analyze Cheng¡¦s creation style and the formation of his tragic philosophy of life from the perspectives of Western literary works and the philosophy of life. Chapter Four Explore how Cheng creates the image of a novel character through artistic portrayal of characters and analyze Cheng¡¦s language style from three perspectives. Chapter Five Discuss Cheng¡¦s novels from four major topics: suffering common people, the greatness of mother¡¦s love, life of the peasantry in Taiwan and the forbidden political issues. Based on these topics, explore the ideas that Cheng embodies in these three novels. Chapter Six Conclusion: Summarize Cheng¡¦s creations and writing style. Abstract of Thesis The title of this thesis is A comparative study of the one ¡V china policy during the eras of Chiang Khai-Shek and Chiang Ching-Kuo. According to the relationship of the China Government and Taiwan, the cooperation on economic issue but the conflict in political ones, and the most controversial issue now is ¡§ One-China ¡¨ policy. Both sides of Taiwan Strait, the Authorities have the different explanations of it because the different of the histories and backgrounds between Taiwan and China since Ming and Ching dynasties. On this thesis, it discuss the policies of Chiang Khai-Shek and Chiang Ching-Kuo ¡¥s eras to handle this problem especially the international relationship of Taiwan and China during that times. After World War ¢º, America becomes a big country to be a turn point of the relationship between Taiwan and China, that ¡¥s what this thesis is written and discussion. According to the different background and histories, it do a comparative study of the policies between Chiang Khai-Shek and Chiang Ching-Kuo in final chapter.

The piano etude is a musical genre that has evolved since the 18th century from a work composed to develop technique into a full-fledged concert piece. The genre has continued to pose a challenge for the composer who attempts to combine the utility of a technical exercise with musical invention equivalent to other genres in the concert repertoire.Falko Steinbach composed his first set of piano etudes, entitled "Figures," 17 Choreographic Etudes, in 2006. This major work is comprised of 17 pieces, which explore all the physical components of successful pianism. These components are outlined in his book A Compendium on Piano Technique. The book also explores psychological disciplines, which can assist the pianist in overcoming technical difficulties, both in practice and performance.This document will consist of an analysis of both "Figures" and A Compendium. It will address the issue of "Figures" as both a didactic work and a work of art in the tradition of the Chopin etudes. It will also discuss how Steinbach synthesizes aspects of both physiological and mental learning disciplines to create a technical approach to the piano that directly impacts both sound and movement.
