The purpose of this dissertation is to examine each of these conditions by focusing specifically on the text of Luke 14:25-33. To do so, an exegetical analysis of the text will be developed, which will serve as a basis for a subsequent theological analysis and consequent hermeneutic actualization. The theme is relevant, since discipleship has been and remains the essence of the Christian life in the sense of a godly life in community. The methodology applied in this work will be guided by a bibliographical research, which will be based on several authors, who have developed studies and research on the subject. The conditions put forward by Jesus, presented in the Lucan text, express the radicality and the necessity of a conscious decision on the position that will be adopted before them. From these factors will depend a genuine position as a disciple of Jesus Christ, who obeys and follows / O evangelho segundo Lucas, na extensa seção da subida de Jesus a Jerusalém (Lc 9,51–19,28), apresenta as condições citadas por Jesus para que alguém se torne seu discípulo. O objetivo da presente dissertação é examinar cada uma dessas condições, focalizando especificamente o texto de Lc 14,25-33. Para tanto será desenvolvida uma análise exegética do texto que servirá de base para uma posterior análise teológica e uma consequente atualização hermenêutica. O tema é relevante, uma vez que o discipulado foi e continua sendo a essência da vida cristã, no sentido de uma vida piedosa em comunidade. A metodologia aplicada neste trabalho se orientará por uma pesquisa bibliográfica, que tomará por base diversos autores que desenvolveram estudos e pesquisas sobre o tema. As condições apresentadas por Jesus e narradas no texto lucano expressam a radicalidade e a necessidade de uma decisão consciente quanto ao posicionamento que, diante delas, se adotará. Identity construction of Roman Catholic religious sisters in the church in Nigeria.

This study was designed against the background of the vital need for a comprehensive research on religious sisters in Africa and Nigeria in particular to address the problems and challenges of identity construction by them within the context of religious community life. It is an interpretative qualitative research study which used an interdisciplinary theoretical approach, drawing on theology of religious life and dialogical self theory to argue that the sisters‘ performance of identity is a context-bound activity. Interview data was drawn from 18 participants from two religious congregations (Daughters of Divine Love and Society of the Holy Child Jesus) in Nigeria in order to understand the meaning sisters give to their intersubjective exchange and the impact it makes on their development and performance of personal/religious identity. The results showed that the sisters used a multiplicity of I-positions to construct identity. This multiplicity of I-positions arises from self-positioning and self as positioned by others (including superiors/formators, senior/older sisters, priests) which are laden with conflicts and dilemmas of identity construction. The major dilemma of identity construction that the participants encountered is based on the discrepancy between the ideal and the lived reality of religious life. The participants presented the ideal as a call to do God‘s will in direct imitation of Christ, but the lived reality offers a mixed experience. On the one hand the participants indicated that relationships within the religious community, Church and wider Nigerian society are supportive, facilitating their development and performance of Christ-like identity. But on the other hand the findings reveal that the participants‘ performance of identity has been hindered by power relations and dominance (including gender related issues) which are prevalent in religious communities, the Church and wider Nigerian society, leading the participants to present their performance of identity as a struggle for survival. Thus their construction of identity is a constant negotiation process, in which they are engaged in appropriation and rejection of positions as they struggle to construct unity-in-multiplicity. To this effect the study recommends that leaders of religious life review their leadership style in order to adopt a more inclusive approach which gives every sister the opportunity to speak and be heard, thus create a more conducive environment for sisters‘ identity construction. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2012.

Training disciplined soldiers for Christ : the influence of American fundamentalism on Prairie Bible Institute during the L.E. Maxwell Era (1922-1980)

This study presents an insider’s view concerning the significant influence of American fundamentalism at Prairie Bible Institute (Three Hills, Alberta, Canada) during the tenure of the school’s co-founder and primary leader, Leslie Earl Maxwell. During much of the period covering 1922-1980, PBI rivaled well-known American schools such as Moody Bible Institute, the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA) and Columbia Bible College in Columbia, South Carolina, in size. These schools were also highly efficient in producing hundreds of missionaries and Christian workers to serve the fundamentalist cause in North America and around the world. As a belated response to Dr. John Stackhouse, Jr.’s portrayal of PBI in his 1993 book, Canadian Evangelicalism in the Twentieth Century: An Introduction to Its Character, this thesis offers clarification and modification to Stackhouse’s work regarding how PBI during the Maxwell era should be viewed by students of church history. It is argued here that the ubiquitous influence of the United States of America on Canadian life is clearly visible in the nature of the Christian fundamentalism that prevailed at PBI under Maxwell’s leadership. The work thereby lends a certain amount of credibility to the suggestions made by some scholars that PBI during Maxwell’s career might legitimately be considered an outpost of American fundamentalism. Employing primarily a quantitative assessment of the evidence in combination with personal anecdotes and a few basic statistics, the thesis reveals that Maxwell’s personality and rhetoric were consistently more militant than Stackhouse allows. PBI’s affinity for many of the distinctives of American fundamentalist theology and culture are also documented. Such an approach serves the additional purpose of enabling the writer to call into question the utility of considering militancy the defining characteristic of twentieth-century evangelicalism when considered from a post-9/11 perspective. It also enables a challenge of Stackhouse’s assumption that what he identifies as “sectish” Canadian evangelicalism is ultimately as substantially different from American fundamentalism as the Canadian scholar infers. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th. The Trinity and the Christian life : issues of integration and orientation

This thesis is an attempt to relate the Scriptural revelation of God's nature to the normal Christian life. It analyses the experiential factors that originally gave rise to a triune awareness of God, arguing that a contemporary recovery of those seminal events is requisite for an integration of the trinity into the Christian life. After a theological summation of the biblical revelation, the thesis then explores the nature of the orientation of the trinity within the Christian life. This orientation is brought about by observing the harmonious arrangement of the different Persons within the Godhead. Once this is done we can then ensure that this arrangement finds an echo and corresponding imprint within the Christian life. As the Christian consistently integrates that tripartite relationship into the Christian life, the doctrine of the trinity will be a continual source of sustenance and direction for life and godliness. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / Th.
