The narrative and the commemorative in the ceramic vessels of Hylton Nel, Wonderboy Nxumalo, Grayson Perry

This study explores the narrative and the commemorative aspect of the contemporary ceramic vessel. It examines the context of the narrative and the commemorative and how it manifests in the works of Grayson Perry, Wonderboy Nxumalo and Hylton Nel. I have tended to take an approach that is Post Modernist and deconstructive which attempts to be inclusive. The narrative and the commemorative are explored and defined within the discourse of literary theory. Hence the concept of memory, history, time, narrative structure and semiotics are evident within these definitions. The relationship between the image and text is also explored and how the artist exploits this narrative device. The contemporary vessel is used within the narrative in the appropriation of ceramic tradition and is explored in the works of these artists. Futhermore these traditions are subverted and manipulated in order to convey the narrative, whose content is both private and collective and extends and transgresses the confines of societal boundaries. It will be demonstrated how each of the artists convey their own dialogue that is driven by their own personal histories. The chapters therefore explore thematically, many aspects of the narratives, all of which are relevant to the artists: · The Concept of the Child · The Didactic Nature of the Narrative. · Narrative, Genre and sign. · Sexuality, Transgression and Queer Politics. · Recalling the Past; History and Nostalgia. I n the final chapter I explore my own work from the required exhibition. Object /Vessel: Narratives of Containment. The subject of the narrative is explored within the context of the ceramic vessel and the mixed media drawing. Many of the aspects of the narrative explored in this study have influenced my own work, in particular the concept of memory, nostalgia and the past.

Diablos, machos, broncos and indios : the politics and poetics of history in northern Guerrero

The tropes of the diablo, the macho, the indio and the bronco have served as a means by which the state of Guerrero, Mexico, has been discursively defined, both externally and internally. I employ a critical reading of these tropes in an analysis of several commemorative performances that characterize the historical imaginary of northern Guerrero. The heart of the study is a description and analysis of the Diablos of Telolopan, a tradition which is celebrated as part of the Fiestas Patrias, and commemorates local participation in Mexico’s War for Independence, 1810-1821. I compare this tradition with other regional commemorations, including alternative fiestas patrias, the Abrazo of Acatempan, and the Festival of Cuauhtémoc, arguing that commemorative performance forms part of a poetics of history which resists the imposition of national hegemonic historiography. I complement the study of local history-making with an analysis of the way in which space and memory come together in the practices that surround death in Teloloapan. / text

Arboreal Eloquence: Trees and Commemoration

This thesis is about the use of trees for commemoration and the memory that they have anchored in the landscape. There has been little written on the use of trees for commemorative purposes despite its symbolic resonance over the last 150 years. To determine the extent to which commemorative trees have been employed, the social practice and context in which the trees were planted, field and archival work was undertaken in New Zealand and Australia. This has been supported with some comparative work using examples from Britain and the United States of America. The research also utilizes the new availabilities of records on-line and the community interests that placed historical and contemporary material on-line. The commemorative tree has been a popular commemorative marker for royal events, the marking of place and as memorial for war dead. It has been as effective an anchor of memory in the landscape as any other form. The memory ascribed to these trees must be understood in terms of the era in which the tree was planted and not just from a distance. Over time the memory represented by the trees and its prescribed meanings, has changed. For all its power and fragility, memory is not permanent but nor is it so ephemeral as to exhibit no robustness at all. Instead memory exists in a state of instability that leaves it open to challenge and to constant reassessment based on the needs of the viewing generation. This instability also allows the memory, and thus the tree, to fade and become part of the domestic landscape of treescape memories (Cloke and Pawson, 2008). However, in some circumstances trees are retrieved and reinscribed with specific memory and made relevant for a new generation. The landscape created by commemorative trees is, therefore, multifunctional, in which social relations support memory, remembrance, forgetting, silences, erasures, and memory slippage.

The significance of dining in Late Roman and Early Christian funerary rites and tomb decoration

The presented thesis examines dining practices associated with ancient funerary rites, and representations of meals that decorated Roman tombs. Evidence for dining, and its significance in mortuary rites, comes from various sources: from pagan, Christian and Jewish literary examples that describe funerary and commemorative events, and archaeological material of food remains and dining installations at the cemeteries, to pictures of meals depicted on different media: cinerary urns and altars, gravestones, frescoes, mosaics and sarcophagi. The aim of this thesis is to investigate available sources, focusing mainly on pictorial representations of late Roman and early Christian dining in order to assess the purpose of decorating the tombs with convivial images. The thesis begins with a discussion of how the Roman catacombs were used by early Christians, and how they were perceived by the post-sixteenth-century explorers and researchers. As our understanding of the development of the subterranean cemeteries has changed over the past centuries, so has our view of the late ancient societies and their funerary practices. Chapter 1 investigates both written and archaeological evidence for Roman funerary meals (silicernium and novemdiale) and commemorative rites during several festivals for the dead (e.g. parentalia0or0rosalia) performed by families and members of collegia. This Chapter also presents the development of the funerary Eucharist, and discusses evidence for early Christian funerary prayer. Chapter 2 focuses on memorials decorated with diners reclining on klinai, which were intended to represent the status of the deceased. Chapter 3 discusses painted collective meal scenes represented on stibadia, which are differentiated according to their interpretation: Elysian picnic scenes, images representing status of the deceased, or refrigeria (commemorative events) held by family and collegia. This section also includes an investigation into early Christian convivial images, which portray biblical stories and refrigeria. Chapter 4 presents convivial images from the catacomb of SS. Pietro e Marcellino, which provide evidence of a group of foreigners who migrated to Rome. Chapter 5, the final chapter, presents collective meal scenes on sarcophagi, which depict mythological events and picnic scenes reflecting elite villa life style. However, a small group of early Christian examples were also designed to portray honorary meals. In conclusion, the thesis provides evidence for shared funerary practices amongst different religious communities in the Roman world. Additionally, in the majority of cases the dining scenes focus on the representations of the deceased (their status or profession) rather than any particular religious affiliation; while both pagan and Christian images of refrigeria were designed to strengthen, or substituted for, actual commemorative rites.

Performing remembrances of 9/11

The attacks of 11 September 2001 have had a profound impact for many, altering lives, perceptions, politics and policies. The last decade saw the construction of numerous memorials commemorating the events across the United States. Most prominent is the National 9/11 Memorial in New York City at Ground Zero. Highly contested in its planning and building stages, the memorial site was designed to be a national symbol of mourning, remembrance and resiliency, and has since become one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. This thesis casts the matter of memorialising 9/11 as a performance of remembering. It utilises an analytical frame that draws from theoretical resources of collective memory and performance studies to examine how and by whom public remembrances of the event are framed, performed and maintained. Theories of social remembering render it an active process. A performance lens used analytically allows for a recognition of commemorative practices not as a mode of representation, but rather as a doing, (en)acting and interacting in the moment. By understanding public remembrance as performance, this thesis explores the implications of thinking about public memory in those terms. Through ethnographic methods the research unpacks the doing of public memory in three scenarios, each with their own setting and cast of characters, and interprets how, if and when individuals subscribe to the public and/or official memory of the events being memorialised. The first is set at the 9/11 memorial. Although the performances at the memorial site occur in an institutionalised, scripted and choreographed environment, the bodily (en)acting of and at the site can shift complex boundaries and commemorative narratives. The second provides the example of commemorative walking/ running events as performed remembering. These public processions are ritual-like (re)enactments that solidify and reaffirm the politicised national commemorative master narrative of 9/11. Lastly, the annual ritual of commemoration on the anniversary of 9/11 highlights and intensifies the separation of official and vernacular public memory and shows how in both settings organisers and actors utilise embodied performance strategies to gain or regain visibility in the public sphere.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Visando apontar as vicissitudes que possam estar relacionadas ao fato de alguns rompimentos conjugais ocorrerem em datas comemorativas foi produzida a dissertação. O tema surgiu em pesquisas sobre separação conjugal e guarda de filhos do Instituto de Psicologia da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, nas quais se observou que as dissoluções que ocorreram nas datas festivas eram relevantes. Foram desenvolvidas análises bibliográficas sobre casamento, dissolução da conjugalidade, comemorações, memórias e rituais. Devido à interdisciplinaridade da temática realizou-se estudos em Psicologia, Antropologia, Direito, História e Sociologia. Pretendeu-se verificar quais os sentidos atribuídos pelos ex-cônjuges à data comemorativa na qual ocorreu a separação. Buscou-se constatar se houve alteração ou reconfiguração do significado das datas após o rompimento e visou-se apresentar reflexões que possam auxiliar a prática clínica e jurídica, mediante a atuação do profissional psicólogo nas questões tangentes à separação conjugal. A metodologia utilizada foi de História de Oral História de vida. Foram entrevistados quatro sujeitos, um rapaz que tomou a iniciativa no seu aniversário, uma moça que anunciou a decisão no aniversário de vinte seis anos de casamento, uma mulher que recebeu a notícia no Natal e um homem que foi comunicado no Ano Novo. Todos são do Estado do Rio de Janeiro e de classe média. A partir do discurso foi realizada a análise qualitativa dos dados, classificando-se as respostas em categorias essenciais à pesquisa. Como resultados verificou-se, no que se refere às datas comemorativas, que os entrevistados vivenciaram esses momentos como se estas possuíssem algo de mágico. Como se nestas épocas todos os problemas pudessem ser colocados de lado e tréguas pudessem ser feitas. Entretanto, os relatos mostraram que a tal mágica não ocorreu, as dificuldades continuaram expostas e, pelo contrário, o clima do evento evidenciou as convergências ficando difícil progredir como se nada estivesse acontecendo. Os sujeitos que tiveram a iniciativa em terminar com o relacionamento afirmaram que as datas das bodas de casamento e o aniversário natalício deram força e coragem que não tinham tido até aquele momento. Este ato favoreceu a sensação de realização e conquista que, no entanto, vinham misturada de dor, frustração e mágoa. Os sujeitos que receberam o comunicado da decisão do rompimento do casamento no Natal e no Réveillon reconheceram que a noticia configurou-se numa surpresa impactante, ao ponto de provocar silêncio. Identificou-se que não houve reconfiguração nos sentidos atribuídos às datas comemorativas, ao contrário o rompimento nestes eventos sociais fortaleceram o acontecimento. No entanto, foi possível perceber uma adição ao calendário oficial. O Natal, o Réveillon, as bodas e o aniversário é, também, o dia do rompimento conjugal. Soma-se marcos e fortifica-se o evento na memória dos sujeitos que vivenciaram estas histórias. Dentre as contribuições para a prática da Psicologia Jurídica e da clínica evidenciou-se que estes profissionais devem estar atentos ao caráter cíclico das festividades que estão nos calendários, configurando-se em momentos de transição, de inícios e fins. / The thesis has been elaborated having an objective to underline the vicissitudes which may refer to the fact of some conjugal breaking-offs taken place on the commemorative dates. The topic resulted from researches of the Institute of Psychology of the State Rio de Janeiro in respect of conjugal dissolution and guardianship of children. Through the said research it has been observed that dissolutions which occurred on festive dates were relevant in this regard. There have been conducted certain bibliographical analyses on marriage, conjugal dissolution, commemorations, remembrances and rituals. Due to correlation with other subjects certain study has been realized on such disciplines as Psychology, Anthropology, Civil Law, History and Sociology. It has been an intention to verify meanings attributed by ex-husband and ex-wife to the commemorative date on which the dissolution occurred. The research has been made to ascertain whether there has been alteration or reconfiguration of the date meanings after the dissolution event with a purpose to present certain reflections which may contribute to clinical and juridical practice through the performance of the professional psychologist within the areas related to the issues on conjugal dissolution. The methodology of Oral History Life History has been applied. Four persons have been interviewed: a guy, who took initiative on his birthday, a girl who announced the decision on her twenty sixth wedding anniversary, a woman who received such news on Christmas day and a man who was communicated that information on the New Years Day. They all are from the State Rio de Janeiro and are representatives of the media class. The qualitative data analysis has been made to classify responses into essential categories to align with the research. As far as commemorative dates are concerned, it has been verified that interviewees experienced those moments in such a way as if those moments were of some magical nature. As if at that time all the problems could have been put aside and a truce could have been concluded. However, results have demonstrated that such magic did not occur and problems continued to exist, and on the contrary, the climate of the event proved that it was difficult for convergence to progress as if nothing has happened. Those persons who took an initiative to terminate the relationships confirmed that the dates of wedding anniversary and birthdays gave them such a strength and courage which they have not had before that moment. This action has favoured to the sensation of an ability to realize and explore being, however, mixed with pain, frustration and misfortune. Those persons who received the information about conjugal dissolution on the Christmas and New Years Days expressed that such information turned to have an effect of surprise causing a moment of silence. It has been identified that there were no reconfiguration in the meanings attributed to the commemorative dates, on the contrary, the breaking-off on such social events have strengthen the occasion. However, this made possible to perceive an appearance of the additional official date to the calendar. Christmas, New Years Day, birthday and anniversary, in addition are also date of conjugal dissolution. Such event is fortified in the memories of those persons who have experienced these occasions. Among contributions to the practice of the Juridical Psychology and of the clinical one, evidenciou - in case that than it is to these professionals must be advertent to the character cíclico of the festivities than it is to they are at the calendars , configuring - in case that well into moments transitional , as of starts AND fins.

The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada’s Representation of Indigenous History from 1945 to 1982

Canada formed the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada in 1919 to commemorate subjects of national historic importance, the terms of which were very subjective and initially narrowly interpreted. This thesis explores the development of the Board’s representation of Indigenous history in national historic designations from 1945 to 1982. It does so by examining Board meeting minutes, reports, administrative structures, policies, and drafted inscriptions. This thesis argues that the Board worked towards better representing Indigenous history internally during the period, though the results only became public toward the end. Indigenous subjects considered and subsequently designated were largely Indigenous figures who supported assimilationist practices by the British and Canadian governments, or archaeological sites that divorced Indigenous peoples from the present. Another significant source of subject matter useful in examining the Board’s improved means of presenting Indigenous history was the North-West Campaign. Internally, the Board struck the Indian Tribes of Canada committee that became the Fur Trade and Indigenous Peoples committee, developed policy on Indigenous language use and the protection of archaeological remains, and collaborated with the National Museum of Man to reconcile shortcomings in its expertise to improve its portrayal of Indigenous history. These factors were all instrumental in the development of the Board’s more accurate and informed presentation of Indigenous history by the end of the period, with higher numbers of designations and a broader range of Indigenous subjects.
