The development and technologizing of selected Sepedi ICT terminology

Magagane, Raesetja Linah January 2011 (has links)
It is my wish that the Sepedi language speakers, through the development and technologization of certain Sepedi ICT terminology, are able to operate a computer in their own language, and implement the new developed and technologized ICT terminology (technologization). The pupils and students at their various institutions should be made comfortable in using the developed and technologized Sepedi language terminology. In the long run the Sepedi language speakers should be ensured access to the web in order to find information about Sepedi language, culture and terms in disciplines such as ICT. It is recommended in this thesis that higher learning institutions offer bursaries to students to develop all South African languages in such a manner that they can be used in all high status functions.

An investigation of the XMOS XSl architecture as a platform for development of audio control standards

Dibley, James January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the feasiblity of using a new microcontroller architecture, the XMOS XS1, in the research and development of control standards for audio distribution networks. This investigation is conducted in the context of an emerging audio distribution network standard, Ethernet Audio/Video Bridging (`Ethernet AVB'), and an emerging audio control standard, AES-64. The thesis describes these emerging standards, the XMOS XS1 architecture (including its associated programming language, XC), and the open-source implementation of an Ethernet AVB streaming audio device based on the XMOS XS1 architecture. It is shown how the XMOS XS1 architecture and its associated features, focusing on the XC language's mechanisms for concurrency, event-driven programming, and integration of C software modules, enable a powerful implementation of the AES-64 control standard. Feasibility is demonstrated by the implementation of an AES-64 protocol stack and its integration into an XMOS XS1-based Ethernet AVB streaming audio device, providing control of Ethernet AVB features and audio hardware, as well as implementations of advanced AES-64 control mechanisms. It is demonstrated that the XMOS XS1 architecture is a compelling platform for the development of audio control standards, and has enabled the implementation of AES-64 connection management and control over standards-compliant Ethernet AVB streaming audio devices where no such implementation previously existed. The research additionally describes a linear design method for applications based on the XMOS XS1 architecture, and provides a baseline implementation reference for the AES-64 control standard where none previously existed.

ICT and education in a less privileged school of NMBA

Mahleza, Nomfundo January 2013 (has links)
Today’s society requires citizens to have a greater knowledge of information technology (IT) than in previous decades. Strategy programs at a national level define the skill needed in an information society and encourage people to learn these skills (Ministry of Education, 2004). In order for everybody to have the opportunity to learn the basics of the new technology, computer science should be included in general education. The development of technology, like Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has turned the world into a global village (Hashem, 2006). The key instrument in this globalisation is the personal computer. Computer–mediated communication is increasingly becoming the dominant means of communication, particularly in the developed and in some developing countries (Adebisi, 2008). In a developing country, ICT is one of the prime ingredients for development. This generally means improvement of people’s lifestyle through improved education, income, skills development and employment. Development should now also be viewed as a multidimensional process involving major changes in social structures, popular attitudes and a national progression of life from unsatisfactory to satisfactory (Servaes, 1999). Since one of the goals of education is to prepare students for work and citizenship, schools are attempting to change their policies, practices and a curriculum to meet the challenge of making pupils ready for a future quite different than the immediate past (Turker & Codding, 1998). The integration of ICT into the teaching and learning environment in secondary education in Port Elizabeth could change learning and teaching attitudes of learners and teachers and help to prepare them for future challenges. However, the success of this integration will depend on how the learners and teachers adapt to the changes and whether they can make ICT technologies part of their daily life. As it is, there is little or no information available regarding the extent of current ICT usage and access in these secondary schools. The research focuses on the availability, usage and the impact of ICT in education, particularly at a secondary school in the poverty-stricken area of Zwide in Port Elizabeth.

Use of computer technology by the elderly

Akkan, Sultan 04 December 2009 (has links)
The information technology that is available now has been developed for other populations, such as the general public, the business community, health care organizations, or the handicapped. However, much of it can be adapted to fit the needs, desires and capabilities of the elderly and computer technology can be much "friendlier" for the elderly in both a technological and a social sense. This study examines the elderly-computer technology interface. State-of -the-art computer input devices are evaluated and an ergonomic analysis is made about the interface. Finally, a new design concept is developed to solve the problems and complications arising from the aging process in terms of accessibility, safety, efficiency, ergonomic comfort of computer technology and to introduce a new and fairly unfamiliar technology to a population group. / Master of Science

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marco Aurélio Ferreira.pdf: 1954364 bytes, checksum: 5a80165bae241ad8ff13768ccec6d249 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-07-02 / The ideas generated in any locality soon accede the virtual space. They spread and are concretized in different places, be it a business room, a factory floor, a schoolyard, a family house or even in streets and public spaces. At the turn of the century, several large-scale protest demonstrations took the streets of urban centers around the world and an unprecedented element could be perceived among its agents: the intensive association of protesters with communication networks, which have as main characteristic the abundance and high-speed circulation of information. However,in the midst of so many transformations and novelties, digital information and communication technologies remain, to some extent, surrounded by unknowns about their potentialities, properties and functions in the context of contemporary democracy, as well as the cultural consequences of their application, reason which expresses the urgency to reflect on its nature and form of participation in collective dynamics, political mobilizations and social movements. This research analyzes the role played by digital communication networks in protests occurred in the city of São Paulo in June 2013, in order to delineate, analyze and understand some of the characteristics of its successful way to disseminate information and its power to persuade and engage citizens that were not previously linked to cultural-political groups or social movements. In sum, it is proposed to investigate how and why the ICTs used in digital communication networks have assumed a preponderant role in June’s disputes and to raise interpretations about their nature and the issues ofcommunicationin contemporary society. The methodology of the work assumes hybrid formulation between bibliographic research, documentary analysis and, consequently, conceptual articulation, from which the analyzes were carried out / As ideias geradas em qualquer localidade logo acedem ao espaço virtual.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Melina Adissi Sternberg.pdf: 604166 bytes, checksum: ecc41bb9db61ffe5b3945c7765992cd8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-08-06 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research is aimed at understanding the development of media skills in schools in the context of cybercultural dromocracy. The primary objective is to understand these skills and their links with the social, economic and media context of the school, as well as the perspective of valuing technology in this environment. The corpus of the research will consist of interviews with pedagogical coordinators of the Mater Dei School, a private teaching institution in the city of São Paulo. The school provides digital media for educational purposes as part of the execution of its educational policy project. Intended for the regular activities of all curricular components, digital media are intrinsically linked to students' school routine. In these cases, the development of media skills is at stake, and that’s the central focus of the research. This concept is understood as the sum of technical, practical and cognitive skills that covers both the use of the media and the critical understanding of macrossocial and mediatic processes. As a consequence of technological development, the social, cultural, economic and/or political contexts of life were eventually mediatized, a scenario in which the media permeate the development of contemporary society. In the same context, new models of construction and mediation of knowledge emerge, prompted by the imperative of cyberculture dromocracy in this mediatized capitalist structure. In this scenario, which justifies the need for an in-depth investigation, the research problem concerns how and to what extent the institution appropriates the discourse of competence and/or dromocracy in order to determine the development of media skills in the school system. As a methodological strategy, the interviews with educational managers at the Mater Dei School, as well as the mapping of the characteristics of the school system studied, are based on the following hypothesis: a school has learning objectives focused on the development of media skills, incorporated into the curriculum of pedagogical coordination and teachers, as a consequence of demands outside the school, such as the need to train students able to deal with digital technologies / A presente pesquisa está dedicada à compreensão do desenvolvimento de competências midiáticas em escolas no contexto da dromocracia cibercultural.

Securing softswitches from malicious attacks

Opie, Jake Weyman January 2007 (has links)
Traditionally, real-time communication, such as voice calls, has run on separate, closed networks. Of all the limitations that these networks had, the ability of malicious attacks to cripple communication was not a crucial one. This situation has changed radically now that real-time communication and data have merged to share the same network. The objective of this project is to investigate the securing of softswitches with functionality similar to Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) from malicious attacks. The focus of the project will be a practical investigation of how to secure ILANGA, an ASTERISK-based system under development at Rhodes University. The practical investigation that focuses on ILANGA is based on performing six varied experiments on the different components of ILANGA. Before the six experiments are performed, basic preliminary security measures and the restrictions placed on the access to the database are discussed. The outcomes of these experiments are discussed and the precise reasons why these attacks were either successful or unsuccessful are given. Suggestions of a theoretical nature on how to defend against the successful attacks are also presented.

Bluetooth audio and video streaming on the J2ME platform

Sahd, Curtis Lee 09 September 2010 (has links)
With the increase in bandwidth, more widespread distribution of media, and increased capability of mobile devices, multimedia streaming has not only become feasible, but more economical in terms of space occupied by the media file and the costs involved in attaining it. Although much attention has been paid to peer to peer media streaming over the Internet using HTTP and RTSP, little research has focussed on the use of the Bluetooth protocol for streaming audio and video between mobile devices. This project investigates the feasibility of Bluetooth as a protocol for audio and video streaming between mobile phones using the J2ME platform, through the analysis of Bluetooth protocols, media formats, optimum packet sizes, and the effects of distance on transfer speed. A comparison was made between RFCOMM and L2CAP to determine which protocol could support the fastest transfer speed between two mobile devices. The L2CAP protocol proved to be the most suitable, providing average transfer rates of 136.17 KBps. Using this protocol a second experiment was undertaken to determine the most suitable media format for streaming in terms of: file size, bandwidth usage, quality, and ease of implementation. Out of the eight media formats investigated, the MP3 format provided the smallest file size, smallest bandwidth usage, best quality and highest ease of implementation. Another experiment was conducted to determine the optimum packet size for transfer between devices. A tradeoff was found between packet size and the quality of the sound file, with highest transfer rates being recorded with the MTU size of 668 bytes (136.58 KBps). The class of Bluetooth transmitter typically used in mobile devices (class 2) is considered a weak signal and is adversely affected by distance. As such, the final investigation that was undertaken was aimed at determining the effects of distance on audio streaming and playback. As can be expected, when devices were situated close to each other, the transfer speeds obtained were higher than when devices were far apart. Readings were taken at varying distances (1-15 metres), with erratic transfer speeds observed from 7 metres onwards. This research showed that audio streaming on the J2ME platform is feasible, however using the currently available class of Bluetooth transmitter, video streaming is not feasible. Video files were only playable once the entire media file had been transferred.

Extending the reach of personal area networks by transporting Bluetooth communications over IP networks

Mackie, David Sean 29 March 2007 (has links)
This thesis presents an investigation of how to extend the reach of a Bluetooth personal area network by introducing the concept of Bluetooth Hotspots. Currently two Bluetooth devices cannot communicate with each other unless they are within radio range, since Bluetooth is designed as a cable-replacement technology for wireless communications over short ranges. An investigation was done into the feasibility of creating Bluetooth hotspots that allow distant Bluetooth devices to communicate with each other by transporting their communications between these hotspots via an alternative network infrastructure such as an IP network. Two approaches were investigated, masquerading of remote devices by the local hotspot to allow seamless communications and proxying services on remote devices by providing them on a local hotspot using a distributed service discovery database. The latter approach was used to develop applications capable of transporting Bluetooth’s RFCOMM and L2CAP protocols. Quantitative tests were performed to establish the throughput performance and latency of these transport applications. Furthermore, a number of selected Bluetooth services were tested which lead us to conclude that most data-based protocols can be transported by the system.
