Single and searching: how older and younger adults seek romantic partners online

Davis, Eden Morris 30 September 2014 (has links)
Despite a growing population of single older adults, past research and theory on romantic relationship formation has primarily focused on younger adults. Online dating has become an increasingly prevalent context for both older and younger adults to form romantic relationships. Nonetheless, adults of different ages may have different motivations for seeking dating partners. Using a framework of agency and communion to synthesize disparate literatures on personal goals, evolutionary motivations, and socioemotional motivations across the lifespan, the current research focuses on age differences in self-presentations in 4000 online dating profiles sampled from two popular online dating websites. Themes in these profiles were identified using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software (LIWC; Pennebaker, Booth & Francis, 2007). Regression analyses revealed significant associations between age and word use. Older adults were more likely to use first person plural pronouns (e.g. we, us, our), reflecting a focus on connectedness as well as words associated with health and positive emotion. Younger adults were more likely to emphasize the self, using more first person pronouns and were more likely to use words associated with work and achievement. Results suggest younger adults focus on enhancing the “self” when seeking romantic partnership. Consistent with theories of adult development, older adults are more positive in their profiles and appear to focus more on the “self” as embedded in relationships. / text

Perfectionism, Life Narratives, and Well-Being During Freshman Year

Mackinnon, Sean Peter 08 August 2012 (has links)
Various dimensions of perfectionism are proposed, but are seldom integrated. This research develops and tests an integrative theory of perfectionism. Theory predicts personality traits (perfectionistic concerns, but not perfectionistic strivings) precede and predict changes in characteristic adaptations (perfectionistic self-presentation and perfectionism cognitions). Theory also predicts characteristic adaptations precede and predict decreases in subjective well-being (SWB), and are associated with a particular patterned form of perfectionistic narrative identity (i.e., heightened agency and lowered communion). This research tests this integrative theory. A sample of 127 emerging adults (ages 18-25) transitioning to university for the first time was recruited (78% female; 81% Caucasian). A 3-wave, 130-day longitudinal design with quantitative and qualitative components was used. Participants completed questionnaire measures of perfectionism and subjective well-being at all waves, and completed semi-structured life story interviews at Waves 1 and 3. Interviews were transcribed and coded for themes of agency (i.e., themes of achievement, status, power, and self-mastery) and communion (i.e., themes of love, dialogue, caring, and community). Results are presented in Chapters 2, 4 and 5. In Chapter 2, perfectionistic concerns led to increased perfectionistic self-presentation, which in turn led to decreases in SWB. In contrast, perfectionistic strivings did not predict longitudinal change in perfectionistic self-presentation or SWB. These findings supported hypotheses. In Chapter 4, perfectionistic concerns and perfectionism cognitions were positively correlated with agency. Perfectionism cognitions mediated the relationship between perfectionistic concerns and agency. A qualitative thematic analysis revealed themes of agency focused on performance-related concerns, with undertones of self-doubt and unrealistic high standards. These findings supported hypotheses. In Chapter 5, perfectionistic concerns and SWB were unrelated to communion, contrary to expectations. However, themes of communion exhibited good inter-rater reliability, test-retest reliability, and face validity. Hypotheses regarding communion were not supported. Overall, most hypotheses were supported. By conceptualizing perfectionistic personality as a dynamic, multifaceted, and integrated system, there are numerous implications for developmental, clinical, and personality psychology. These implications, along with the strengths and limitations of this study, are discussed.

The Eucharist in a time of change : an investigation into the Eucharist as practiced at The Church of the Ascension between 1975-2002.

Kruger, Andrew. January 2011 (has links)
“The Eucharist i n a time o f change : an investigation into the Eucharist as practiced at ‘The Church of the Ascension ’ between 1975 and 2002 . ” by Andrew David Kruger The thesis set out to discover how the Eucharist developed at ‘The Church of the Ascension ’ between 1975 and 2002. This microcosm offers a partcularly interesting case study. This period was a t ime of great change – the Anglican Eucharistic liturgy underwent significant revision, South Africa moved from Apartheid to Democracy and the three rectors brought charismatic, evangelical and Anglo-Catholic worldviews to bear on the Church of the Ascension, during their respective terms of office. In order to document the development of the Eucharist , three primary sources were collected and analysed, First , data from the Service Register was captured and processed. Second, a synopsis of the Parish Council Minutes was created. Third, interviews with the three rectors – the first being charismat ic, the second evangelical and the third Anglo-Catholic – were conducted along with four lay parishioners . The three primary sources were analysed and several developments were observed. These developments included the following: chi ldren were admi t ted to Communion after Baptism, where before they were required to be Confirmed; the ordination of women became accepted and women presided at the Eucharist , where before they had not ; the lai ty became more involved in the leading the services; The at t i tude toward administering the sacrament became more liberal , as even those of other Faiths were welcomed. Surprisingly none of the laity interviewed showed any awareness that the Eucharist developed. The laity showed little ability to link the Eucharist to the context they inhabited. It is imperat ive for the Anglican Church of Southern Africa to help the laity appropriate the deep truths of the Eucharist . / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2011.
