Unresolved adverse and traumatic experiences in parents can amplify the risk of perpetuating intergenerational transmission of trauma. Parents’ positive and adaptive practices such as self-care might act as a protective factor against this ripple effect. This study investigated whether self-care moderated the relationship between parental ACEs, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and parental reflective functioning in mothers who are experiencing high psychosocial stress (n = 59) residing in rural Appalachia. Within our sample, there was no statistically significant linear relationship between our predictors, ACE score and PTSD symptoms, and our outcome of interest, maternal pre-mentalizing. We did not find empirical support for self-care serving as a protective factor in the context of ACEs and PTSD symptoms. Despite the null findings in the main study hypotheses, the results of this study contribute to the literature on maternal trauma history and parenting outcomes. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Children between the ages of 6 and 15 years were interviewed using a questionnaire designed to assess their conception of confidentiality in the counseling experience. This questionnaire was based upon the stipulates for confidentiality outlined in the 1977 American Psychological Association's Code of Ethics. Children age 6 to 8 years scored significantly lower on the questionnaire than children age 12 to 15 years. Neither of these groups' scores were significantly different from the score of children age 9 to 11 years, yet the total mean scores increased as the age of the children in the groups increased. These results suggest that children gradually evolve a conception of confidentiality consistent with professional guidelines. Four variables were examined which were expected to grossly predict the child's total score on the questionnaire. Chi-square analysis did not reveal significant differences for the variables of perceived adequacy of explanation of confidentiality and attitude toward breaking a secret. For the two variables involving the children's perception of the maintenance/violation of their confidentiality, chi-square analysis did reveal significant differences (which were not, however, found using a one-way analysis of variance procedure). Some demographic variables were found to be significantly related to scores on the questionnaire, yet most of the relationships involved specific area scores rather than total scores.

Alcoholism is a serious public health problem. There is strong evidence that the rate of alcoholism, especially among women is increasing. Until recently, there has been very little research on alcoholic women. The recent increase in the number of known female alcoholics may be related to the new liberation and freedoms women have gained. While the research literature does not support the notion of a typical female alcoholic personality type, certain recurrent characteristics have been noted. This paper attempts to document the problems which appear to be related to women who become alcoholics and to look at the variety of treatment programs currently available for the female alcoholic.

This paper is a detailed review of published research related to the use of operant procedures and techniques in the development of speech behaviors in severely language handicapped children. Review of this literature suggests that there currently exists an operant technology for the development of speech behaviors in a great many severely language handicapped children. Based on the procedures reviewed, a general program for the development of speech behaviors is suggested, which includes behavioral referents by means of which a therapist may both determine the potential utility of the recommended techniques and decide upon an appropriate starting point for training.

With declining federal revenues, state governments are facing budgetary constraints that restrict the finances of local governments. The states' answer to requests of local governments for aid has been to encourage neighboring communities to join in regional efforts so as to economize in providing services. Some states have gone as far as to develop programs of economic incentives and disincentives that induce regional cooperation. This dissertation is based on the premise that state efforts to foster sub-state regional cooperation have been largely ineffective because of an "analysis gap" that restricts the scope of the inquiry to rational, economic considerations only. The intent of the examination is to broaden the arena of analysis by showing that a holistic approach is needed that takes into consideration the many other diverse factors that influence regional cooperation. The study applies Carl Jung's theory of archetypes to a subject community for purposes of showing how the analysis arena can be broadened and how practical strategies for attaining regional cooperation can be developed. / Ph.
