Research projects / Preparedness for OBE implementation: a case study of the mathematics department at a college of education in the Eastern Cape (Research project 1) / Development and evaluation of learning materials in linear programming (Research project 2) / Mathematics for all: a South African perspective (Research project 3)

Thomas, Chacko January 2002 (has links)
The South African education is undergoing transformation. The introduction of Curriculum 2005 and Outcome Based Education (OBE) are important aspects of this transformation process. The implementation of the new curriculum however, has not been smooth. A lack of adequately qualified and trained teachers and effective learning support materials have been identified as some of the major problems facing the implementation of OBE at school level. Even though the colleges of education in the country were not brought on board in the planning and implementation levels of the new curriculum, they could have played an important role in training of educators and developing learning materials for the successful take off of the new curriculum. In the first research project I look into the preparedness of the Mathematics Department of a college of education in the Eastern Cape towards the implementation of Outcome Based Education. The first part of the research project consists of a literature review on Curriculum 2005, Outcome Based Education and the expectations of teachers in the new curriculum and the research methodologies used. The findings revealed that the department, as a whole, was not adequately prepared for the implementation of outcome-based education even though there were some indications that the department effected some modifications in its curriculum and practice teaching. As an OBE facilitator and a college lecturer, I developed some learning materials in Linear Programming. These activity-oriented materials were based on constructivist principles and were used by my first year Secondary Teachers Diploma students. In the second research project, I reflect on the results of using these learning materials by my students. In the first chapter of the project, the context and background of the research and the reasons for selecting Linear Programming as the topic for preparing the learning material are described. This is followed by a brief overview of constructivism together with a brief explanation of the reasons for considering the material to be constructivist. The research paradigm followed in the project, the research techniques employed in evaluating the learning material and the strengths and weaknesses of the evaluation techniques are given in the next chapter. In the following chapter, the findings from the various data gathering methods and the results of the implementation of the material are described. The concluding chapter presents a critical reflection on the whole process involved in the material development. The post 1994 government in South Africa seems to attach much importance to mathematics, science and technology education. The majority of the population who were previously denied access to these subjects is given more opportunities to learn them. The international Mathematics Union declared 2000 as the World Mathematical Year. One of the aims of the activities organized as part of the celebrations was improving the public image of mathematics to realize the vision of "Mathematics For All". The South African government shows keen interest to improve mathematics education in the country in an attempt to realize the vision of Mathematics For All. Even though the accessibility rate to mathematics has increased, the success rate has not yet increased as anticipated. In this context I, as a post-graduate student in Mathematics Education, thought of /reviewing the concept of Mathematics For All in the South African context. In the third research project, which is a literature review, initially an attempt is made to unpack the concept of Mathematics for ALL. In analyzing the concept, answers are sought for questions like: What is mathematics and why should it be taught? It is followed by a brief review of some goals of mathematics education. Then the current situation of mathematics education in South Africa and the efforts to improve it are also looked at. This is followed by an analysis pf the reasons for the general unpopularity of mathematics. In the concluding part some suggestions for improving mathematics education in the country are given.

Active learning in the literacy learning programme of the foundation phase in Curriculum 2005

Ebrahim, Hasina Banu 04 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the concept of Active Learning (AL) and the related concept Active Leamer Participation (ALP) as it features in the Literacy Learning Programme of the Foundation Phase of Curriculum 2005. The aim of the action research project, conducted at four schools in the Durban district of K waZulu- Natal, was to find a model of AL in order to provide guidance on teaching for ALP. The study involved the researcher working collaboratively with five Foundation Phase educators over a period of four months. Results of the study indicated that teaching in the sequential stages of classbuilding and teambuilding, whole class discussion, group work and individual work increases learners' active participation and ownership in terms of the learning experience. These stages form the model of active learning. Due to the spirit of camaraderie and partnership that developed in each stage, the research team is inclined to call it "The Tirisano Model of Active Learning". / Educational Studies / M. Ed. O estágio curricular supervisionado e o ensino-aprendizagem de competências profissionais para a atenção odontológica especializada em redes de saúde

Nascimento, Camilla Ferreira do January 2017 (has links)
The objective of this study was to analyze the teaching-learning processes and the development of competencies for specialized dental services work of the Supervised Curricular Stage II of the School of Dentistry of UFRGS. It is an unique and holistic case study that integrated quantitative and qualitative analyzes. Two-hundred and forty six interns participated in the survey from a total of 329 who completed the internship between 2013 and 2016. The data used in the analyzes was captured through an anonymous online questionnaire. Twenty-six closed-ended questions (responses on a 6-point likert-type scale) were made available with the possibility of also being filled as open-ended answers. The questionnaire consists of five thematic blocks and organized into two broad categories of analysis: Structural and pedagogical evaluation of the internship experience (sociodemographic identification, area of study, distance learning activity and pedagogical dynamics) and the development of professional skills of acting in competence(protocols, hands-on experience, work-related motivation, technical values and teamwork). The quantitative responses were exported to the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences - SPSS for Windows, version 16.0 and subjected to descriptive analysis. For the analysis of the quantitative variables in the comparison between the categories in the different semesters the chi-square test was used and, when needed, the Z test to compare proportions with Bonferroni adjustment was used. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare means. The qualitative data were analyzed to evaluate not only the textual content, but its historical and social sense. The results demonstrate that internship experience is providing significant learning about the functioning of the network of specialized attention in oral health and of acting in competence of future surgeons-dentists. It encourages the debate of values, norms and readaptations of the protocols. In the amplitude of the questions about the dynamics of the stage can be affirmed that it occurs mainly by the opportunities of establishing relationships between theory and practice in the work routine. Work-related motivation was one of the most well rated items of acting in competence, while teamworkpresented responses at the lowest scores on the likert scale. Internships in the field of management and distance education activities had the highest number of unsatisfactory opinionsdue to their innovative pedagogical character.

The use of rubrics in the assessment of social sciences (history) in the get band in transformational outcomes-based education

Kruger, Sandra Carolina January 2007 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, 2007 / With the advent of implementing transformational outcomes-based education in South African schools, educators have had to adopt a standards-based assessment approach. Rubrics as an assessment scoring tool have been acclaimed as one of the most effective assessment tools with which standards-based assessment can be implemented and managed. This study explores the ways in which educators manage assessment in their classrooms whilst promoting the basic tenets of transformational outcomes-based education. The demand is on competencies that illustrate the ability to think and perform critically. Bloom's Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain is put forward as an instrument to use in designing and using rubrics in order to achieve the desired learning outcomes. Effecting change is not an easy process and this study investigates the challenges educators are facing in implementing this aspect of educational reform.

An outcomes-based training model for textile technologists

Bester, Marianne January 2004 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Education))--Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 2004 / The textile industry in South Africa is regarded as a labour intensive industry with high capital investment. Presently, the textile industry is facing the impact that globalisation will have on the local industry, which emphasises the importance of training and development in the face of decreasing levels of human resources. These decreasing levels of employment will result in the loss of highly technical expertise with no replacement source in the labour market, unless textile technologists are educated to compensate for the loss. The White Paper on the Transformation of Higher Education (1997) indicates that one of the purposes of higher education is to proVide the labour market, in a knowledgedriven and knowledge-dependent society, with the high-level competencies and expertise necessary for the growth and prosperity of a modern global economy. The establishment of the National Qualifications Framework in South Africa has diluted the rigid boundaries between education and training, requiring of Higher Education to establish programmes that are responsive to the needs of industry. The focus of this research project is to develop and evaluate an outcomes-based textile technologist curriculum based on the education and training needs of the Western Cape textile industry in particular, as a result of environmental changes impacting on the South African textile industry in general. The development and evaluation of an outcomes-based qualification in textile technology take place Within a world of constant change, where work and education are becoming increasingly interwoven, stressing the importance for higher education in South Africa to transform by developing learning programmes in harmony with industry and by specialising in making knowledge useful and applicable.

Jacobs, Christopher Colin January 2005 (has links)
Thesis (M. Ed. (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005 / With the introduction of Outcomes Based Education (OBE), Technology became a new learning area which is compulsory in the General Education and Training band. Technology Education was not offered as a teaching subject in teacher education institutions and as a consequence most teachers received little or no training in technology education. The approach to the teaching of Technology, with its demands, could pose challenges or problems to teachers who did not receive adequate training in Technology Education. The purpose of this research is to investigate the manner in which technology teachers plan, teach and assess the technological process and the way the learners experience the teaching and assessment of the technological process. The main objective of the study is to enhance classroom practice by highlighting the challenges that face teachers and learners and by offering guidelines for teaching and assessing the technological process

Carolina Tarcinalli Souza 13 January 2017 (has links)
The motor development is organized from the beginning of the conception, having followed the principles of motor, affective-social and cognitive the domain, that gradual go if differentiating. The result of the interaction of all these factors after the birth is express for the motor behavior, indicating its importance in the development of the human being. The objective of this study was to get evidences of the validity of construct and the internal consistency of the Psychomotor Battery for children in phase of basic pertaining to school education in a Brazilian sample. The sample was composed for 100 participants, of both the sorts, age enters 8 12 years, being GI as group reference, with 50 citizens, both the sex, registered regular education, and GII, as comparative, composed group for 50 participants with diagnosis of cleft palate fiction, without syndrome and neurological alteration. In the process of validation of the instrument, it had adjustments how much to the vernaculars of the Brazilian Portuguese, referring to the idiomatic and semantic translations, as well as in the instructional statements of the tests of the instrument. In the comparison between GI and GII, significant difference in the gross praxis met statistical, with props up below of the waited average. However, both the groups had had satisfactory performances how much to the equilibrium, lateralization, body perception, gross and fine praxis, tonus and time-space orientation. This study it described aspects of the process of accomplishment of the validity of construct and internal consistency, procedures considered for researchers and professionals of the health area, worried in using measured and trustworthy and appropriate instruments for determined population.
