Grand Central for chamber orchestra, live audio processing, and video projections

Dicke, Ian James 03 August 2012 (has links)
Grand Central is a twenty-minute multi-media work for chamber orchestra, live audio processing, and video projections. The piece was commissioned by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's New Music Ensemble, and will be premiered in March 2013. Composing a multi-media work poses many challenges, including the methodology of how to work with diverse components, the interplay between these elements, and how to best utilize the performance space to its full potential. The work is inspired by my experiences at Grand Central Terminal during my childhood and the musical material is derived from the building’s infrastructure and rich cultural history. The first chapter of this treatise examines the genesis of the composition, Grand Central’s history, and technical considerations related to the integration of technology, orchestration, and staging. The second chapter is encompassed by a thorough movement- by-movement analysis, complete with explanations of pitch derivation, formal principals, and programmatic considerations. / text

Ferreira, Carolina Borges 31 October 2016 (has links)
Ever since becoming technically mediated, concert music served as a model to assess the achievements of high acoustic fidelity, both in radio broadcasts, as in domestic hearing in re-producers. After various processes of technological mediation, through listening to records and similar (LP, DVD, Blu-ray etc), consumption of concert music is extended to virtual environ-ments: streaming transmissions provide to the public concert music in a way unprecedented, since it does not have as a reference point the material object, aside from the fact that they offer the reception in real time, live. The different forms of reception on which this service is based have attracted the interest of researchers from different areas of knowledge. In the case of mu-sic, it unfolds in a field of study in music; specifically in sonology. This work intends to present a study on the reception of online concert music, through a comparative analysis of the prefer-ences by the consuming public of that service and what is actually offered to them by these services. Two aspects will be analyzed in detail: systems of \"recommendation\" and \"digital curation\", since they are the way in which the service is generated and managed. Frequently used in digital platforms for listening to popular music, little is known about the operational functioning of this service, in the case of concert music. This research thus aims to evaluate how this methodology is applicable to the concert music repertoire. The main objective of this research is scrutinizing the processes of this new way of listening, which depends on the critical interaction between subscribers and the service provider. In short, to understand in more detail the particular aspects that constitute the operation of streaming services.

César Guerra-Peixe: a modernidade em busca de uma tradição / César Guerra-Peixe: modernity in search of a tradition

Barros, Frederico Machado de 10 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis consists in a sociological investigation of the Brazilian concert music created during the 1940s and 50s. The focal point is Cesar Guerra-Peixes compositional trajectory along these two decades, which serves as a guideline through his letters, writings, interviews and, above all, the music he composed during that period. Discussing Guerra-Peixes relationship with his peers, the thesis strives to shed light on how he responded compositionally to the problems and debates of his time. The investigation is approached through the complex relationship between modernity and tradition in his works.

The identity, application and legacy of Paul Hindemith's theory of music

Desbruslais, Simon Stephen January 2013 (has links)
This thesis investigates the relationship between Hindemith’s music theory and his evolving compositional practice. It focuses on the first volume of his Unterweisung im Tonsatz (1937); both evaluating the very identity of the treatise and analysing how it may be applied to free composition. Above all, this work highlights the increased use of quartal pitch collections found in Hindemith’s Unterweisung-based compositions. Archival documents from the universities of Yale, Berlin, Buffalo, and the Frankfurt Hindemith Institute augment this process, and are used to revise our understanding of how Hindemith’s music theory originated, and how it relates to his practice and teaching. The dissertation begins by exploring the theoretical and intellectual climate of the Rundfunkversuchsstelle at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik within a critical commentary of Hindemith’s music theory. It then develops a new theoretical perspective of quartal pitch space, and atonal prolongation, to provide an analytical toolkit. The list of compositions in the Unterweisung appendix, which Hindemith felt most successfully demonstrated his theory in practice, structures the next three chapters. The Sonata for Solo Viola op. 25/1, a pre-Unterweisung composition, is followed by the Ludus Tonalis, which was published soon afterwards, which is investigated for its explicit theoretical connections. The third analytical chapter focuses on the Das Marienleben cycle as a work written before the Unterweisung, and subsequently revised with theoretical concerns. The final two chapters investigate the prominent decline in popularity experienced by Hindemith, both regarding his theory and compositions, from the 1950s. This is epitomised by a number of strongly-worded polemics published in The Music Review, much of which, it may be argued, is inaccurate or unduly critical. The thesis ends by constructing a Hindemith legacy based on a selection of archival documents and scores, together with a selection of trends in composition and music theory.

The construction of the modernist sonority of Heitor Villa-Lobos by harmonic processes: a study of the Choros

Moreira, Gabriel Ferrão 17 February 2014 (has links)
As one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth century in the global context , Heitor Villa- Lobos (1887-1959) produced a collection of works that searchs for varietyusing an eclecticism that has become the norm in his work . However, even in the midst of such plurality , we can notice a macrodivision in his work that separates works based on classic - romantic tonal patterns in dialogue with its appropriations of urban popular music from those of modernist experimentation and character. Within the first group we have the epitome of the Bachianas Brasileiras series, the second , the Choros series, which marked the entrance of Villa-Lobos in the internationally renowned composers scenario . Historically, villalobian works of modernist intention was branded by many musicians and biographers as irrational , chaotic , wild , not being faced , until recently , by the analytical tools used by theorists to deal with the music of his contemporaries. The lack of analytical studies acting together with those judgments prevented the generation of a critical tradition about the music of Villa -Lobos in the first decades after his death. Recently, analytical works on the \'Modernist Villa -Lobos \' have been written in Brazil and other parts of the world . However , most of these writings that are based on traditional tools (set theory , the study of symmetries , textural analysis ) has brought a less informative overview about the processes of composition, the historicity of villalobian music, and the general procedures that the composer developed to obtain his characteristic modernist sound in a significant number of works. These results testify to the very failure of rigid analytic methods applied to the particular dynamic of the work of Villa- Lobos . In this context , this paper proposes to deepen the understanding of the Villa- Lobos modernist writing, having as heuristic key,the concept of interaction and bricolage - the latter in the antropological sense - in the manipulation of the harmonic choices, in the search for a common compositional gesture in the analyzed parts . To this end , several analytical methods were combined in a sort of meta-analysis that tries to cover the main insights of this thesis. Within the Choros series, the Choros No. 2,3,5,10 and the first part of the Choros Bis were chosen , for the clarity with which the fundamental topics of this thesis are presented in those analytical representations. Other pieces were analyzed across and are used in this work for the generalization of some procedures found in the analyzes of the major works.
