Grand Central is a twenty-minute multi-media work for chamber orchestra, live audio processing, and video projections. The piece was commissioned by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's New Music Ensemble, and will be premiered in March 2013. Composing a multi-media work poses many challenges, including the methodology of how to work with diverse components, the interplay between these elements, and how to best utilize the performance space to its full potential. The work is inspired by my experiences at Grand Central Terminal during my childhood and the musical material is derived from the building’s infrastructure and rich cultural history. The first chapter of this treatise examines the genesis of the composition, Grand Central’s history, and technical considerations related to the integration of technology, orchestration, and staging. The second chapter is encompassed by a thorough movement- by-movement analysis, complete with explanations of pitch derivation, formal principals, and programmatic considerations. / text

We apply this method, also used to prove the wellknown Hawking-Penrose theorems which states that unless the matter content of the Universe present unusual and exotic properties, the general theory of relativity predicts that space-time singularities will develop either in the past of in the future. In this dissertation we regard this question in different context, namely, by considering alternative gravitational theories formulated in a Weyl integrable geometry (WIST). We extend the Hawking-Penrose theorems to this kind of non-riemannian geometry and obtain conditions for escaping the inevitability of space-time singularities. We also consider the issue of changing frames in scalar-tensor theories and provide a geometric overview of Dickes interpretation of Brans-Dicke theory by unifying the treatment of frames in a weylian scenario. / Nesse trabalho, analisamos a existência de singularidades do espaço-tempo sob o ponto de vista intrínseco da incompletude geodésica. Usamos o método presente nos teoremas de Hawking-Penrose para demonstrar o resultado conhecido, desde a década de 1970, que se suposta a inexistência de propriedades exóticas de matéria e energia, o espaço-tempo descrito pela Relatividade Geral (RG) é, necessariamente, singular. Para contornar esse problema, consideramos a possibilidade de termos teorias gravitacionais ambientadas em uma geometria de Weyl integrável, como WIST. Generalizamos o teorema de singularidade da RG riemanniana para essa geometria não-riemanniana, fornecendo assim, condições para a inevitabilidade ou provável fuga do destino singular. Também tratamos do tema da mudança de frames nas teorias escalares-tensoriais, fornecendo uma visão geométrica da interpretação de Dicke para a teoria de Brans-Dicke ao unificar os frames em um ambiente weyliano.

Two and three-level atomic systems will be addressed, which in turn is in the (Lambda) configuration.We will use the Dicke states to calculate the transition probability between the energetic levels for a 2-level ensemble of atoms interacting with a circularly polarized field. We will deduce the master equation for a two-level atom interacting with a thermal reservoir, observing the effects of irreversible spontaneous decay and loss of coherence between quantum states. Finally, we will study the phenomenon of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and Dark states. / Neste trabalho será feita uma descrição da interação entre a radiação eletromagnética com a matéria. Serão abordados sistemas atômicos de dois e três níveis, esse por sua vez estando na configuração (Lambda). Usaremos os estados de Dicke para calcular as probabilidades de transição entre os níveis energéticos para um ensemble de átomos de 2 níveis interagindo com um campo circularmente polarizado. Deduziremos a equação mestra para um átomo de dois níveis interagindo com um reservatório térmico, observando os efeitos de decaimento espontâneo irreversível e perda de coerência entre os estados quânticos. Por fim, estudaremos o fenômeno da Transparência Eletromagneticamente Induzida (EIT) e dos Estados Escuros.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Investigamos inicialmente o problema da obtenção de uma gravitação newtoniana modificada no caso da teoria da Relatividade Geral. Na sequência, encontramos uma solução geral com simetria esférica para um campo gravitacional fraco no contexto da Teoria de Brans-Dicke. Esta solução é independente de qualquer condição de coordenada. Então, para uma escolha conveniente da função f(r) na métrica de Brans-Dicke, exibimos uma fórmula modificada para a gravitação newtoniana, a qual pode descrever a gravidade em uma escala de comprimento pequena. Discutimos os resultados em comparação com o caso da Relatividade Geral / We investigate initially the problem of obtaining a modified newtonian gravitation in the case of General Relativity theory. Following, we find a general solution with spherical symmetry for a weak gravitational field in the context of Brans-Dicke theory. This solution is independent of any coordinate condition. Then, for a convenient choice of the function f(r) in Brans-Dicke metric, we exhibit a modified formula to newtonian gravity, which can describe gravity in a small length scale. We discuss the results in comparison with the case of General Relativity

In our investigation we consider that the spacetime is static and we makes no assumptions about the relative smallness or isotropy of internal pressures of the sources generating the gravitational field. We employ the technique of weaking the gravitational field equations in order to derive formulae for the refractive index tensor and we make some applications of these results / Neste trabalho obtemos o índice de refração considerando-se a teoria de Brans-Dicke como a teoria gravitacional fundamental. Na investigacão admitimos que o espaço-tempo é estático e as pressões internas da fonte do campo gravitacional são, em princípio, não nulas e anisotrópicas. Utilizamos a técnica da aproximacão de campo fraco das equações de campo para obter expressões para o indice de refração tensorial, fazendo-se algumas aplicacões dos resultados

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In this work we develop the formalism of the gravitomagnetism in the context of the Brans-Dicke theory of gravity. We write the field equations in a type-Maxwell form while considering the approximations of weak field and of low speed of rotation of the source. We examine the effect of Lense-Thirring precession of inertial frames and obtained the equation of motion for a particle. We have also introduced a model with the angular momentum of the source varying linearly with time, calculating the gravitomagnetic time delay due. The results were compared with the predictions of the theory of General Relativity. / Neste trabalho desenvolvemos o formalismo do gravitacionismo no contexto da teoria gravitacional de Brans-Dicke. Escrevemos as equações de campo em uma forma tipo-Maxwell ao considerarmos as aproximações de campo fraco e de baixa velocidade de rotação da fonte. Examinamos o efeito Lense-Thiring de pressão dos referenciais inerciais e obtivemos a equação de movimento para uma partícula. Introduzimos ainda um modelo com o momento angular da fonte variando linearmente no tempo, calculando o atraso do tempo gravitomagnético decorrente. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados com as previsões da teoria da Relatividade Geral.
