The Consciousness of Nation in Wang Song¡¦s poetryKang, Shu-Pin 16 July 2003 (has links)
Although modern Taiwanese literature is emphasized in recent years, there are few dissertations about classic Taiwanese literature. In this dissertation, the author tries to explore into the national consciousness presented in Wang Song¡¦s poetry. Wang Song is a classic poet in Taiwan when the Japanese were ruling Taiwan. Therefore, he has to present his national consciousness implicitly in his poetry. The author tries to explain his national consciousness through the three stages of Wang Song¡¦s life. This is because his poetry is deeply related with his life experience. The readers can observe Wang Song¡¦s paradoxical emotion in his poetry. This paradoxical emotion results from his national consciousness. Wang Song grew up in a traditional chinese family and he believes he is a Chinese. This is why he can¡¦t accept the Japanese government. Through the discussion of Wang Song¡¦s national consciousness, we can understand his motive of creation and the real meaning of his poetry.
The second chapter introduces Wang Song¡¦s life and his work. The third chapter brings in the creative style of the classic Taiwanese society which Wang Song lived in. The forth chapter talks about Wang Song¡¦s creative style and his theory of creation. The fifth and sixth chapter are the analysis of the national consciousness in Wang Song¡¦s poetry. Although Wang Song¡¦s poetry are not as good as the other poets in the classic Chinese literature, his work shows the national consciousness when he survives in a colonialized society. Through the reading of his poetry, the author offers a way to understand the Taiwanese literary work during the Japanese colonializaiton.

Alfred T. Mahan stressed that naval strategy means using the power of sea. Thus one can imagine that whether the national sea power can develop smoothly is closely related to the development of naval strategy. The prosperity or decline of the national sea power is quite related with its own strength of the Navy. In the recent years, the development of PLA navy rise rapidly just like the economy of PRC. At the same time, the development of PLA navy become the focus of the western countries, especially after Hu Jintao took the office. The desire to acquire open sea fleet also makes the western countries to concern and feel uneasy.
The long range strategic goal of the PLA is to ensure the PRC¡¦s regional military initiative in Asia. When attacking Taiwan, the PRC want to make sure the effectiveness against the U.S. military intervention. The PRC also want to defend its the maritime economic and energy interests in other regions. The naval power of the PLA navy is far behind the advanced countries in the past. Not until Deng Xiaoping brought up the ¡§concept of sea power¡¨ did it awake the PLA navy the ¡§sense of ocean¡¨ and then trigger the Great Leap of military build-up towards the comprehensive objectives of direction for high technology of defense, military deterrence, national defense economy and international diplomacy. On the other hand, this Great Leap of military build-up caused a grave threat on the national security of the ROC. Therefore, this thesis is trying to discuss the naval developing history of the PRC after 1949 and hope to reach the goal as Sun Tzu said:¡¨ One who knows the enemy and knows himself as well may never be defeated¡¨.

In Woolf's clothing : an exploration of clothes and fashion in Virginia Woolf's fictionNicholson, Claire January 2013 (has links)
This inter-disciplinary study explores the role of dress and fashion in the novels of Virginia Woolf, examining them in a chronological sequence. I will show how Woolf’s own concerns with dress are reflected in her work in the development of her Modernist method of writing which employs clothing as particularly apt imagery with which to evoke tensions of surface and depth, and perception and reality. The investigation begins with a summary of previous discussions regarding the historical, social and psychological significance of dress, noting that the role of clothing in fiction is a comparatively under-investigated area. This study makes the nine major novels its primary focus, together with selected short stories, and it draws upon analysis from the fields of costume history, socio-cultural studies and literary criticism to explore and evaluate Woolf’s use of clothes in her fiction. Woolf’s open criticism of the ‘materialist’ writing of Victorian and Edwardian novelists such as Arnold Bennett led her to adopt a more sparing and subtle use of dress as a means of portraying character, drawing not merely upon the visual aspect but also upon the symbolic, sensual and psychological dimensions of wearing a garment, culminating in a phenomenon she described as ‘frock consciousness’. In this acknowledgement of the potential of clothing to influence human consciousness and psychology Woolf simultaneously reflects concerns of her time and anticipates feminist ‘reclaiming’ of fashion and dress as legitimate areas of academic study by late-twentieth-century writers such as Elizabeth Wilson. Clair Hughes writes that “novelists do not send their characters naked into the world, though critics have often acted as though they do.” (6). By placing dress at the centre of a consideration of Woolf’s fiction it opens up these texts to new readings and interpretations, to see them ‘in Woolf’s clothing’.
