This work presents an application study of the Conservative Power Theory (CPT) in the generation of control reference for a Parallel Active Power Filter (PAF), in order to compensate current disturbances in a Three-phase three-wite electrical power system. Some of the most important power teories find in literature have also been summarized, especially those related to active filter controlling techniques. Special attention was given for the CPT, since is a recent proposal and it allows the selection of the disturbance to be compensated through the definition of different control references using different CPT current parcels. An alternative methodology has also been proposed tot the design of the parallel active power filter, which is based on the analysis of the load by means of the CPT current decomposition and according to a previously defined selective compensating strategy. Therefore, it is possible to analyze the economic viability of the active power filter implementation if choosing the most important disturbance to be compensated, obvioulsly assuming a specific load configuration. Other important contribution was the discussion of a new power factor definition (proposed by the CPT), which considers not only the load reactive behavior, but also the effects of current unbalances and distortions on the efficiency of the power circuit. Based on this new definition, we observe the necessity of revising the normalized referential values in order to ensure a proper accountability or revenue metering methodology. Finally, the theoretical studies and the CPT application for controlling a parallel active filter were validated by means of computational simulations using PSIM software

The Invisible Free Speech Crisis: Why We Ignore Conservative Censorship on College Campuses

Mann, Kyleigh 01 January 2018 (has links)
Petitions to reject controversial speakers from college campuses would have little effect unless administrators were willing to formally disinvite speakers. So, why are administrators responsive to some movements to exclude certain perspectives from campus and not others? This paper attempts to answer this question through an empirical study of 349 speaker disinvitation attempts on 218 U.S. colleges and universities from 2000 to 2017. I use an original data set with information sourced from the Foundation for Individual Rights and U.S. News and World Report to determine what factors predict a successful formally rescinded invitation. My findings suggest that the forum of the speech, the petitioner type, and speaker type may predict the success of an attempt to disinvite a speaker from college campuses. My empirical results showed that conservative protests are better predictors of success than liberal protests. This paper addresses class bias and complacency with the academic culture in religious institutions as the main influencers causing pundits to ignore free speech politics at less selective, non-secular American colleges and universities.

The traditions continue : leadership choices at Maritime Liberal and Conservative Party conventions

Stewart, David Kenney January 1990 (has links)
That leaders are important in Canadian party politics is almost axiomatic: they are the prime electoral resource, the ultimate policy authority and the focus of media attention. Yet little is known of what divides provincial parties when they choose a new master. The politics of provincial leadership conventions lie in uncharted waters. This thesis focuses on provincial parties, exploring support patterns at Maritime leadership conventions. The study draws primarily on data provided by unpublished surveys of delegates to Liberal and Progressive Conservative leadership conventions in the three Maritime provinces. These nine conventions took place between 1971 and 1986 and the delegate survey responses report the behaviour and attitudes of over 3100 party activists. The analysis develops provincial, partisan and secular comparisons. A framework for analysing delegate support patterns is derived from the literature on national conventions and Maritime politics. Application of this framework to the nine conventions reveals a recurring theme. Candidate support is best understood in a 'friends and neighbours' framework. Friends and neighbours refers first, to a non-factional geographic pattern of support. Simply put, delegates tend to support the local candidate, a neighbour. The second element of friends and neighbours support relates to ethno-religious ties. Candidates receive disproportionate support from delegates who are 'friends' in terms of shared religious or ethnic background. Friends and neighbours divisions were more important than attitude, age, gender or differences in social status: they were present throughout the period in each province and both parties. The importance of place and religion/ethnicity provide empirical evidence of Maritime traditionalism. The support patterns would be well understood by 19th century politicians and show no sign of dissipating. Attempts to link these patterns to age or level of education were unsuccessful. Virtually all delegates were influenced by the ties of 'friendship' or 'neighbourhood'. The major exceptions were ex officio delegates. These party professionals acting in a brokerage role were relatively immune from the friends and neighbours pull. By mitigating such divisions, ex officio delegates made substantial contributions to party unity. This thesis reveals a coherent and consistent pattern of intra party divisions in the region. It confirms the strength of traditionalism in the Maritimes and highlights an important manifestation of this traditionalism: ethno religious solidarity undercut by localism and mitigated by brokerage politics. Such findings are in sharp contrast to assertions that Maritime politics is changing. / Arts, Faculty of / Political Science, Department of / Graduate

An Analysis of Cross-Ideological Expectation Voting on the United States Supreme Court, 2000-2017

Saulsbury, Sarah 01 May 2020 (has links)
Contrasted with the other branches of government, the Supreme Court has long been an institution posing a level of secretiveness equal to its power. Naturally, that has developed a desire, and maybe necessity, to gain a better understanding regarding the principal influences of judicial decision making on America’s highest Court. One phenomenon that has long been of interest to Court observers is the notion of the justice’s voting across established ideological lines. Previous attempts to explain and reconcile cross-ideological votes have focused on the influence of external actors on the Court, its legitimacy, public opinion, and dynamics between justices. Yet, there remains a need to scrutinize the types of cases most likely to produce cross-ideological votes among justices in order to offer explanatory factors as to when a particular cross-ideological vote occurs. Often ignored in the quest to ascertain factors influencing particular justices and the Court as a whole, is the need for a study of case topics and the ability of these topics to correlate to an unexpected vote by a justice. In this thesis, I analyze which legal issues embedded within Supreme Court cases are most likely to produce cross-ideological votes among justices. I then propose a theory for predicting what issue areas are most likely to produce cross-ideological votes among Supreme Court justices in the future. In this research, I find that the issue area of criminal procedure correlates to the largest number of cross-ideological votes by Supreme Court members. Interestingly, I also find that conservative and liberal justices are equally inconsistent in voting concerning criminal procedure cases.

Är excentrisk träning den bästa behandlingen för akillestendinopati? : En systematisk litteraturstudie / Is eccentric exercise the best treatment for achilles tendinopathy? : A systematic review

Trogen, Josefin, Ringmar, Clara January 2021 (has links)
Metod: Systematisk litteraturstudie. Sökningen genomfördes i databasen PubMed. / Background: Achilles tendon issues is a common problem among athletes on all levels. The problem can cause pain and loss of function. Eccentric exercise is a somewhat gold standard and often used in the clinical setting although the level of evidence is limited and conflicting. Objective: Map the evidence of eccentric exercise as a treatment for achilles tendinopathy. Method: A systematic review. The search was conducted in the Pubmed database. The included studies were analyzed using the PEDro scale and the evidence was graded using the GRADEstud. Results: The literature search identified 7 studies that were included with a total of 448 participants. The studies received a moderate-high quality on PEDro. The level of evidence at 8-16 weeks was moderate (+++) and at 52 weeks very low (+). Eccentric exercise had a lower effect than heel lifts and acupuncture measured with VISA-A. Eccentric exercise had a similar effect on VISA-A as passive stretch and heavy slow resistance. At 52 weeks the effect of eccentric exercise was the same as prolotherapy injections and heavy slow resistance. Conclusion: Eccentric exercise might have an effect as treatment for achilles tendinopathy, but the effect is the same or lower than other treatment options measured with VISA-A and might depend on the natural healing process or the participation in a study. The level of evidence for eccentric exercise was graded at 8-16 and 52 weeks respectively, as moderate (+++) and very low (+). This is based on studies of moderate to high quality.

The forgotten accounting chioce : A study about Attention to Detail in the note disclosure

Johansson, Wilma January 2021 (has links)
Background: Investors does seldom use the information provided within the notes when making investment decisions even though it is evident that notes impact the organisations share price. The reason is unclear, though hypothetically it is possible that the unawareness of potential advantages and disadvantages might be the problem. Thus, this report will aim to increase the investors and other stakeholders’ knowledge by measuring the Attention to Detail in organisations notes. Attention to Detail is in this report a measure proclaimed to align with the conservative accounting which then will measure the degree of detail the organisations’ display. Purpose: The purpose is to develop a measurement for ‘Attention to Detail’ and thereafter try to investigate what explains the Attention to Detail within the notes. Thus, the research question is stated as follows: What organisational factors impact companies’ Attention to Detail in their notes? Method: This report applies a deductive and positivistic approach where accounting theories are used to formulate hypothesises. The theories used are PAT/Agency Theory which participated in constructing two hypothesises regarding variable compensation and financial leverage, the Upper Echelon Theory that contributed to establishing a hypothesis concerning women in top position and the Institutional Theory that sympathised in the creation of industry differences hypothesis. A qualitative approach was conducted where data from a total of 175 firms was collected from their 2019 annual reports. To be able to investigate if the hypothesises established had any significant relationships with Attention to Detail, a Pearson correlation and Regression analysis was created.  Conclusion: It was found that financial leverage and different industrial sectors had a positive relationship towards Attention to Detail. It could also be concluded that the Institutional Theory had an explanatory power over the outcome of all the hypotheses and therefore is the most prominent accounting theory to explain the application of detail, in this study.
