A Conservative Front Tracking AlgorithmNguyen, Vinh Tan, Khoo, Boo Cheong, Peraire, Jaime 01 1900 (has links)
The discontinuities in the solutions of systems of conservation laws are widely considered as one of the difficulties in numerical simulation. A numerical method is proposed for solving these partial differential equations with discontinuities in the solution. The method is able to track these sharp discontinuities or interfaces while still fully maintain the conservation property. The motion of the front is obtained by solving a Riemann problem based on the state values at its both sides which are reconstructed by using weighted essentially non oscillatory (WENO) scheme. The propagation of the front is coupled with the evaluation of "dynamic" numerical fluxes. Some numerical tests in 1D and preliminary results in 2D are presented. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

The Right Wing Conservative Politicians In Turkey: Ideological And Political ImaginationsSuveren, Yasar 01 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to describe and analyze the politicians who belong the right-wing political conservative traditions in Turkey by the mediation of their understanding and mentality. In this framework, the study primarily intends to investigate and analyze their perceptions of political and ideological imaginations. Turkish right seems to have a quite heterogeneous structure. While the recognition of the heterogeneity embodied around the political-institutional structuring is crucial to understand the Turkish right-conservatism, focusing merely on the heterogeneity and differences is inadequate to understand the right-conservative tradition. This study aims to analyze the aforesaid diversity and heterogeneity in the axes of politics and ideology. In spite of its heterogeneous qualifications, there are some attributions which made the Turkish right-wing conservative tradition homogeneous on certain economic, social and cultural issues. In this context, the study aims to analyze and understand the differentiations and affinities among the politicians who belong to the mainstream right-wing conservative political parties by focusing on the politicians discourses.

Huvudet i sanden- eller bland molnen? : En komparativ studie av tre konservativa partiers säkerhetspolitiska strategier under det Kalla kriget. / Head-in-the-sand, or in the clouds? : A comparative study of three conservative parties and their foreign policy strategies during the Cold war.Åfeldt, Tobias January 2022 (has links)
Foreign policy is a constant balancing between playing an active role on the international stage versus taking a more cautious stance. This study compares foreign policy development of three conservative parties during the Cold war, in three different nations with vastly different geopolitical importance. The parties compared in the study are the American Republican party, the British Conservative party and the Swedish Conservative party. This study uses party platform and election manifestos from three separate election years as the main sources for comparison. The comparison covers the early 1950’s, middle 1960’s and finally the early 1980’s. The party programs are thereafter analyzed with help of Lane Crothers model to further classify the foreign policy development of each party during the given time period. In conclusion, the study indicates a general move toward an increasingly active involvement on the international stage. The Republican party represents a foreign policy predominantlybased on military and diplomatic capacity to safeguard American foreign interest in relation to the Soviet Union. The British Conservative party as well as the Swedish Conservative party represent a foreign policy strategy with higher emphasis on international economic cooperation based on the liberal market economy.

Modeling and simulation of multi-dimensional compressible flows of gaseous and heterogeneous reactive mixturesDeledicque, Vincent 11 December 2007 (has links)
The first part of this thesis deals with detonations in gaseous reactive mixtures. Various technological applications have been proposed involving detonations, particularly in the field of propulsion. However, it has been confirmed experimentally that detonations generally exhibit an unstable behaviour, leading to complicated flow structures. A thorough understanding of the evolution of detonation waves is needed before they can be used for propulsion purposes. Herein, we present the first detailed numerical study of three-dimensional structures in gaseous detonations. This study is based on a parallelized, unsplit, shock-capturing algorithm. We show that we can reproduce all types of detonations that have been observed experimentally.
The advancements in the field of gaseous compressible reactive flows paved the way for the study of the significantly more complex phenomena that occur in the flow of two-phase, heterogeneous compressible reactive mixtures. In the second part of this thesis, we develop a new shock-capturing algorithm for the study of these flows. We first present a new numerical procedure for solving exactly the Riemann problem of compressible two-phase flow models containing non-conservative products. We then examine the accuracy and robustness of three known methods for the integration of the non-conservative products. The issue of existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Riemann problem is also discussed.
Due to the ill-posedness of the Riemann problem of standard two-phase models, we present and analyze, in the third and last part of this work, a conservative approximation to reduced one-pressure one-velocity models for compressible two-phase flows that contain non-conservative products. Herein, we develop an exact Riemann solver for the proposed reduced model. Further, we investigate the structure of the steady two-phase detonation waves admitted by this model. Finally, we report on numerical simulations of the transmission of a purely gaseous detonation to heterogeneous mixtures. The effect of the solid particles on the structure of the resulting two-phase detonation is discussed in detail.

Ideology or pragmatism : the Conservative Party in opposition, 1974-79Caines, Eric January 2011 (has links)
In January 1979, Stuart Hall claimed to have identified a new ‘radical Right’ ideology he termed ‘Thatcherism’, which was attempting to ‘command the space’ occupied by the social democracy of the then Labour government and the ‘moderate wing’ of the Conservative Party. In short, the Thatcher Conservative Opposition was detaching itself from ‘traditional’ Conservatism. This thesis examines the validity of the claim at the time it was made, through a detailed scrutiny of the positions taken up between 1974 and 1979 by those identified as being on the ‘radical Right’ of the Party and those designated as ‘moderates’. In particular, it analyses the programme proposed by Sir Keith Joseph, the leading advocate of New Conservatism, within the context of the policy-making processes adopted by the Party in those years and the outcome of those processes. It concentrates on efforts to formulate policies in the key economic and industrial relations fields and examines how what emerged was shaped by the opposing views of those involved and by outside events. It considers how Margaret Thatcher, in order to keep the Party intact, contrived to avoid entering into potentially unsustainable policy commitments and, at the same time, impressed herself sufficiently on the electorate that when the opportunity arose, it was prepared to vote her and her Party into office. It became possible, once the first Thatcher government started its work, to regard much of what it did as ideological and radical. However, so inchoate was the programme developed in opposition that one can only conclude that there was no body of doctrine at the time of the 1979 election which warranted the name of ‘Thatcherism’ and that victory was achieved by acting in accordance with ‘traditional’ Conservatism – by doing what was necessary in the circumstances to attain power.

Sex Differences and the Relationship Between the Need for Social Approval and Conservative-Liberal Sexual AttitudesVilet, Jacquelyn 05 1900 (has links)
This study investigated sex differences and the relationship between need for approval and liberal-conservative attitudes regarding sex. The test measures used were the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (M-C SDS) and a questionnaire measuring liberal-conservative sexual attitudes taken from a research survey published in Psychology Today.
