This thesis investigates the effects football games in major international tournaments have on stock market returns. The major international football tournaments are limited to the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, and the games studied are only the finals of these tournaments. The thesis deploys a method of difference in difference with synthetic control groups to capture any effects winning or losing of these games may have on the stock market returns in the following days. The last 22 years of finals in the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship are studied in 11 games and thus 22 treatments. In general, a good fit of the synthetic counterfactuals prior to the event taking place is achieved. The positive and negative events are looked at separately rather than game by game since the distinction between negative and positive events is made by previous literature. All games are treated as equally important since they are all the final of a tournament. The estimated gaps are insignificant for a majority of the games, and no causal relationship between the outcome of finals in international football tournaments and returns on broad stock market indices can be established, possible reasons for this are, among other things, that the indices used in this study is mainly all share indices and large cap indices, which are generally stable.

<p>Filtering strategies play an important role in estimation theory, and are used to extract knowledge of the true states typically from noisy measurements or observations made of the system. The name ‘filter’ is appropriate since it removes unwanted noise from the signal. In 2007, the smooth variable structure filter (SVSF) was introduced. This filter is based on the sliding mode control and estimation techniques, and is formulated in a predictor-corrector fashion. The SVSF makes use of an existence subspace and of a smoothing boundary layer to keep the estimates bounded within a region of the true state trajectory. This creates a robust and stable estimation strategy. The research presented in this thesis focuses on advancing the development and implementation of the SVSF.</p> <p>In its original form, the SVSF does not utilize a state error covariance matrix, which is a measure of the accuracy of the state estimates. Therefore, the first major contribution of this research is the formulation of an SVSF strategy with a covariance derivation. This creates a number of research opportunities that can only be pursued and rely on the availability of the error covariance matrix. In an effort to further improve the estimation accuracy, a time-varying smoothing boundary layer is created by minimizing the covariance. This contribution significantly improves the SVSF, and provides a mechanism for combining the SVSF with other popular estimation strategies. A linear system example with the presence of uncertainties is studied which demonstrates that the proposed SVSF improves the estimation accuracy by approximately 20%. Furthermore, a new model-based fault detection strategy is created based on the interacting multiple model (IMM) method. This new method (IMM-SVSF) is applied on an experimental apparatus for the purposes of fault detection. It is able to improve upon the fault detection probability by 10-30% (depending on the fault), when compared with the most commonly used strategy. The IMM-SVSF method is also found to work extremely well for target tracking problems, demonstrating an improvement of roughly 40%. Cardiovascular workouts offer numerous health benefits, yet beginners often find it challenging to initiate them. Existing wearable technologies, although providing valuable feedback such as heart rate zones, often disrupt the workout flow and distract users due to the need for interaction with the wearable display. In response, we propose an alternative feedback mechanism: cadence, measured in steps per minute. This feedback mechanism uses multiplicative control to produce the correct cadence for the user’s target heart rate (HR). To model the HR and cadence relationship, a first-order system was used. The prototype implementation of this system was completed in Arduino, using a force sensitive resistor (FSR) to measure the user’s cadence and a POLAR HR strap to measure the user’s HR. The cadence is updated every 10 seconds to allow the user to sync to the cadence metronome provided by earbuds. This proposed system has shown promising experimental results for both moderate-intensity and high-intensity workouts, skipping the transition zone between them. This allows the user to avoid awkward workout intensities between a fast walk and a jog.

Audible pedestrian signals: a feasibility studyOliver, Morris Bernard 01 August 2012 (has links)
This report represents a concentrated effort that determines the feasibility of audible pedestrian signals. These signals are devices which give auditory cues to help the visually impaired cross safely at difficult intersections. Surveys were sent out to over 100 organizations, audible signal manufacturers, and cities who have knowledge of the devices, and responses were analyzed. The devices were found to be feasible but only at certain complex and confusing intersections. Twelve criteria for the installation of the devices were developed as were twelve criteria for the operation of the devices. Buzzers, constant tones, bird calls, and voice signals were examined by obtaining information from traffic engineers who had experience with each sound. It was determined that intermittent tones were the most effective for human localization. For the most widely used devices, cost data were developed for the products, installation, and maintenance. A partial listing of the U.S. and foreign cities which have the devices was compiled along with a partial listing of audible signal manufacturers. The problems the visually impaired face as well as their suggested solutions are listed. Topics for further study include the use of hand-held devices which activate sound signals at intersections and the development of tone schemes for 4-leg and multi-leg intersections which are not north south and east-west. An additional topic for future study is the development of tone schemes for traffic circles. / Master of Science
