[pt] A INFLUÊNCIA DOS DEFEITOS CRISTALINOS NA EFICIÊNCIA DE CÉLULAS SOLARES DE BANDA INTERMEDIÁRIA BASEADAS EM SEMICONDUTORES III-V / [en] THE ROLE OF DEFECTS ON THE EFFICIENCY OF INTERMEDIATE BAND SOLAR CELLS BASED ON III-V SEMICONDUCTORS

LIDA JANETH COLLAZOS PAZ 09 February 2021 (has links)
[en] Defects present in structures of intermediate band (IB) solar cells of GaAs with InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by MOVPE have been investigated. The three studied IB solar cells differ in the growth temperature of the spacer layers that separate the InAs QD layers in the active region and the thickness of the thin layer that capping each QD layer. Previously, the energy conversion efficiencies of these cells were measured and the cell with the highest spacer layer-growth temperature (700 C degrees) and thinner capping layer (3 nm) showed the highest efficiency, about 6.9 percent. The cells with thicker capping layers (6 nm) showed lower efficiencies, one of them, with spacer layers grown at 700 C degrees, reaching 5.1 percent, and the other one, with spacer layers grown at 600 C degrees, reaching only 2.8 percent. In this work, DLTS and Laplace DLTS studies show that the cell with the lowest efficiency has the largest number and highest concentrations of defects, unlike the other two cells, which have only one trap, EL2, in lower concentrations. These results demonstrate that the different growth conditions are determinant for the formation of defects and that the defect reduction leads to the increase of the IB solar cell efficiencies. Other samples were also grown and studied by the same techniques: three solar cells with identical structure as the IB solar cells, but without QDs, and individually doped GaAs samples that represent the p and n contact sides of the IB solar cells. From the study of the cells without QDs, the origin of some defects in the IB solar cells was found to be related to the QD growth conditions or related to the spacer layer-growth temperature. The study of the GaAs samples indicated the presence of defects in the p and n sides that could trap photo-excited carriers collected through these contacts during cell operation and thus reduce the efficiency. The results of this work allow developing new strategies to improve the epitaxial growth quality of IB solar cells in the laboratory of semiconductors LabSem of PUC-Rio where the studied samples were grown.

The work presented in this thesis is within the subject of wireless power transmission, power applied to the remote sensors, networks of sensors and actuators with low power consumption. Consumo, eficiência alimentar e exigências nutricionais de vacas de corte na lactação e terminação / Intake, feed efficiency and nutritional requirements of lactating and fattening beef cows

Albertini, Tiago Zanetti 19 January 2007 (has links)
Bezerros ½CC¼AN¼NE apresentaram ingestão de energia metabolizável (IEM) proveniente do leite 11,3% (P<0,05) superior. / This study estimated the requirements and feed efficiency of non-pregnant lactating beef cows, as well as cow calf pairs. It also correlated the efficiency of the cows and their progeny during lactation to efficiency determined for the same cows in a finishing trial after weaning. In the lactating phase cow calf pairs were evaluated from just after birth (17±5, d) to weaning at 210 d. The finishing trial for the mature cows started after weaning and lasted 67 d after wich cows were slaughtered. Twenty adult cows were evaluated, 10 ½ Caracu x Nelore (CN) and 10 Angus x Nelore, bred to Red Angus (RA) and Canchim (CC) bulls, respectively. During lactation the diet (2.30 Mcal ME/kg and 12.4% CP) was offered in variable amounts to maintain individual live weight and condition score constant. The same diet was offered ad libitum to the calves. During the finishing phase cows were fed ad libitum (2.37 Mcal ME/kg e 10.5% CP). The dry matter feed intake of cows was 92,4 and SD 2,9 g DM/kg BW0,75. AN cows had fat corrected milk 12% higher compared to CN cows (P<0.05). However, milk energy content (Mcal/kg) was 9.4% higher (P<0.05) for CN cows. Efficiency of milk production (Mcal milk/Mcal ME intake) was not different. Metabolizable energy for lactation (MEl) was higher (P<0.05) for AN cows in comparison to CN, respectively 90.1 and 74.2 (MEl, kcal MEl/kg BW0,75). ME milk intake was 11.3% (P<0.05) higher for ½CC¼AN¼NE calves. Rates of gain were not different between calves, but ½RA¼CR¼NE were 10.7% more efficient (g LWG210d/Mcal MEI milk+solid diet). There was no difference in cow calf pairs efficiency, but there was a great individual variability with a mean of 35,31 g and SD of 4,08 g LWG210d/Mcal EM for the pair. Cow/calf pair efficiency was positively related to calf weight gain (r=0.79; P<0.01) and negatively to the pair metabolizable energy intake (r=-0.58; P<0.05). At slaughter CN cows presented backfat thickness 29% lower, longissimus muscle area 13% higher and higher empty body weight protein (P<0,05). AN cows had 14.7% higher relative internal organ weight and higher total intestine weight (P<0.01). The phenotypical correlations between efficiency indexes indicate moderate association between cow efficiency measured during lactation and in a short finishing period after weaning (r=0.43; P=0.09). Exist correlations between cow efficiency lactation and efficiency of the pair (r=0.68; P<0.01). Residual Feed Intake (RFI) during the finishing phase was moderately correlated to the RFI calculated during the lactation period for the cow calf pairs RFI (r=0.62; P<0.01) and the cows (r=0.53; P<0.05) indicated that beef cows more efficient in feed conversion during the finishing phase are more efficient during the lactation period.

Structure, morphology and performance relationships of organic photovoltaic devices : the block copolymer approach

Deribew, Dargie Hailu 14 July 2013 (has links)
This work investigates organic solar cells made of a blend of polymeric materials based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as model system. The correlation between the photovoltaic active layer morphology and the performance of the organic solar cell is thoroughly investigated. The chosen method for controlling phase separation in the polymeric blends is to incorporate block copolymers as additives. Three systematically selected block copolymers were used as nanostructuring and/or nucleating agents. Indeed, the incorporation of P3HT-b-PI induces the increase in the number of P3HT crystallites as well as suppresses the growth of PCBM aggregates. On the other hand, the incorporation of P3HT-b-P4VP into P3HT:PCBM decreases the crystallization of P3HT but increases its face-on orientation, a requirement for an enhanced charge transport in organic PV devices.

Identification and neutralization of lifetime-limiting defects in Czochralski silicon for high efficiency photovoltaic applications / Identification et neutralisation des défauts limitant les propriétés électriques du silicium Czochralski pour applications photovoltaïques

Letty, Elénore 19 October 2017 (has links)
Photovoltaic solar cells based on crystalline silicon represent more than 90% of the worldwide photovoltaic market. High efficiency solar cell architectures are currently being developed. In order to allow their maximal performances to be reached, the electronic properties of their crystalline silicon substrate must however be enhanced. The goals of the present work are to identify the defects limiting the electronic properties of the substrate, to understand the mechanisms leading to their formation and to propose routes for their neutralization. The studied materials are n-type Czochralski silicon wafers, usually used as substrates for high efficiency photovoltaic applications. The Czochralski puller was first modeled in order to understand how the thermal history experienced by the silicon ingot during crystallization affects the defects generation. This study were validated through the comparison with experimental data using an original method developed in the frame of this work. We then studied the influence of the thermal budget associated to solar cell fabrication processes on the defects population. We thus showed that the nature of lifetime-limiting defects was completely changed depending on the solar cell fabrication process. Besides, we evidenced an unexpected degradation of the electronic properties of n-type Czochralski silicon under illumination, related to the formation of an unknown bulk defect. The formation and deactivation features of this defect were extensively studied. Finally, the main limiting defects being identified and the mechanisms resulting in their formation understood, we propose in a last chapter new characterization techniques for the detection of defective wafers at the beginning of production lines at an industrial throughput.

Investigation of the photo-induced charge transfer in organic semiconductors via single molecule spectroscopy techniques

Lee, Kwang Jik 06 November 2012 (has links)
Photo-induced charge transfer which occurs between molecules or different parts of a large molecule is the pivotal process related to performances of organic electronics. In particular, injection of charge carriers into conjugated polymers and dissociation of photo-generated excitons at the heterojunction between a donor and acceptor system are of great importance in determining the luminescence efficiency of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and solar energy conversion efficiency of organic solar cells, respectively. However, the complex nature of organic semiconductors as well as complicated primary processes involved in the functioning of these devices have prevented us from understanding unique characteristics of these processes and thereby engineering better materials for higher performances. In this dissertation, two different types of photo-induced (or -related) charge transfer processes occurring in organic semiconductors were investigated by using single molecule spectroscopy (SMS) techniques to unravel the complexities of these processes. The carefully designed functioning capacitor-like model devices similar to OLEDs and photovoltaic cells were fabricated where isolated single nanoparticles were introduced as an active medium to mitigate the complexities of these materials. We observed that injection of positively charged carriers (holes) into poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) single nanoparticles from the carbazole hole transport layer does not occur in the absence of light. We denoted the observed hole injection in aid of light as the light-induced hole transfer mechanism (LIHT). It was revealed that the charging dynamics are highly consistent with a cooperative charging effect. In addition, the LIHT was proposed as the possible source for the formation of deep trapped hole in organic devices. Local exciton dissociation yields across a nanostructured domain between poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) single nanoparticles and either poly(9,9- dioctylfluorene - co - bis-N,N- (4 -butylphenyl)-bis-N,N-phenyl-1,4-phenylene diamine) (PFB) or poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-N-(4-butylphenyl)diphenylamine) (TFB) film in model photovoltaic devices was also investigated. A wide distribution of exciton dissociation yields was observed from each nanodomain due to the device geometry. The observed hysteresis in fluorescence voltage curve was ascribed to accumulated charges following charge separations. The dynamics of charge separation under the applied electric field was described in more detail. / text
