Mulher negra: das formações discursivas à consolidação e quebra do estereótipo da mulata que dança / Black woman: from discourse formation to the consolidation and break of the dancing mulata stereotype

Santos, Andréa Luisa Martins dos 30 August 2018 (has links)
Life in Motion, An Unlikely Ballerina (COPELAND, 2014). / The aim of this study is to observe the relation between specific stereotypes and the identity constructions in the discourses of two Afro - descendant women. This observation is made through the study of two books, being one of them a biography and the other an autobiography (LEJEUNE, 2008), they are: \"Valeria Valenssa, Uma Vida de Sonhos\" (BERGALO; DUARTE, 2015) and \"Life in Motion, An Unlikely Ballerina\" COPELAND, 2014). Besides their skin color, the two women have also the dance in common. While classic ballerina Misty Copeland was the first black woman to be prima ballerina in a ballet company in the United States, the samba dancer Valeria Valenssa was the first mulata Globeleza, the woman who materialized (in)the stereotype of the sensual Brazilian Carnival mulata. The relevance of the research is justified because in both countries the history for the Black women identity construction is, somehow, based on the tragedy of enslavement of Black people, resulting in a trace of racial segregation. This fact is connected to the way of life of the two women investigated in this paper. The investigations are mainly based on the studies regarding stereotypes suggested by Lippmann (2008) and Amossy (2014), Ricoeur\'s theory of narrative identity (2004) and the sociological studies of Collins (2000), Harris-Perry (2011) and Davis (2016). Thus, when comparing both situations, even with some similarities, there is also a distance due to the context of social and cultural interactions between Whites and Blacks in both countries. As the theoretical contribution to the analysis of the corpus, the interdisciplinarity between French Semiotics and its developments, and Discourse Analysis were used. The basis of analysis in this work is the concept of manipulation, considering the possibilities the actor of the utterances has of manipulating the reader-enunciatee. In this way, the studies proposed by Landowski (2014), Fiorin (2002, 2006, 2015, 2016), Discini (2009, 2015), Harkot-de-La-Taille (2004, 2016), Barros (2006), Maingueneau (2005, 2008) and Ricoeur (2004) were used.

From teacups to lumber : archaeological site content and integrity of the Copeland Site (35BE90), Corvallis, Oregon

Kanaby, Kara M. 05 December 2005 (has links)
This thesis describes the archaeological site content and integrity of the Copeland site (35BE90) in Corvallis, Oregon. The Copeland site is owned by the Benton County Historical Society and is the future home of the Benton County Historical Museum. In 2001, an Oregon State University archaeological field school was conducted to test for the presence of the residential houses and commercial businesses that once occupied the Copeland site. The archaeological excavation revealed the presence of both the residential and commercial usage that occurred at the Copeland site. Excavation also revealed that while the integrity of the site has been disturbed by commercial activities the integrity has not been completely destroyed. Finally, recommendations are made concerning further archaeological exploration of the site. / Graduation date: 2006

Entangled Poetics: Decolonial and Womanist Expansions of the Imago Dei

Robinson, Chanelle Olivia Anne January 2024 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Andrew Prevot / This dissertation seeks to contribute to the discipline of theological anthropology by engaging the histories, writings, and aesthetic contributions of women within the African diaspora. In particular, the dissertation crafts an approach to analyzing the concept of the imago dei in relation to the experiences of flesh, bones, land, and sea that have shaped Black women’s poetics, theory, and praxis in the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States. Womanist approaches to theology often center Black women’s lived experiences and literature as resources for religious inquiry. Decolonial scholarship tends to critique the remnants of colonialism in the present, imagining futures beyond hegemonic categories. As a methodological contribution, this dissertation combines insights from womanist theology and decolonial thought, identifying M. Shawn Copeland and Sylvia Wynter as major interlocutors with each respective discipline. This dissertation questions what it might mean for humanity to image God, especially after the dual crises of colonialism and slavery. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2024. / Submitted to: Boston College. Examining facts, finding ugly truths : the historical and political forces that shaped the critical reception of Alice Walker's The third life of Grange Copeland

Sims, Mary Hughes January 1999 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to determine what extraliterary forces--cultural, historical, political, social--shaped the critical reception of Alice Walker's first novel, The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970). The philosophies of Hans Robert Jauss, as espoused in Toward an Aesthetic of Reception (1971), guided this study. Particular interest was placed on Jauss's claim that every work has its own specific, historically, and sociological determinable audience, that every writer is dependent on the milieu, view, and ideology of that audience and that literary success presupposes a book which presents what the audience expects, a book which presents the audience with its own image. (26)The Third Life of Grange Copeland appeared at the end of the Civil Rights Movement, in the midst of a Black Arts Movement (a movement that presented black artist with a criteria for representing their people), and on the cusp of a black feminist movement which moved black women from the object to the subject position in black literary discourse. The politically charged context in which Walker's first novel appeared determined her first audience's reception to her work. The reception from black civic leaders, literary critics, scholars and the black community was largely negative. This initial negative response has followed Walker throughout her literary career despite the fact that she has won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. / Department of English

A practical-theological investigation of the nineteenth and twentieth century "faith theologies"

King, Paul Leslie 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a study of nineteenth and twentieth century faith theology and praxis, seeking to determine a balanced, healthy faith that is both sound in theology and effective in practice, Part 1 presents a history and sources of Faith Teaching and Practices. It first looks historically at the roots of later faith teaching and practice by presenting a sampling of teachings on faith from early church fathers, reformers, mystics, and Pietists. These form the foundation for the movements of faith in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-the classic faith teaching, followed by the modern faith movement and leaders. Part 2 deals with the foundational issues of faith teaching and practice: the relationship of faith to the supernatural, the concept of the inheritance of the believer and the practice of claiming the promises of God, the nature of faith, and the authority of the believer and its inferences for faith praxis. Part 3 investigates seven major theological issues of faith teaching and practice: faith as a law and force, the object and source of faith, the relationship of faith and the will of God, distinguishing between a logos and a rhema word of God, the concepts of revelation and sense knowledge, the doctrine of healing in the atonement, the question of evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Part 4 examines major practical issues of faith teaching and practice about which controversy swirls: positive mental attitude and positive confession; issues of discernment in acting upon impressions, voices, revelations, and "words from the Lord;" questions of faith regarding sickness and healing, death, doctors and medicine; the relationships between sickness, suffering, healing, and sanctification; and prosperity. Part 5 reflects upon these issues and comes to final conclusions regarding: the role of hermeneutics in determining faith theology and praxis, how to handle unanswered prayers and apparent failures of faith, the seeming paradox and tension between claiming one's inheritance and dying to self, a summary of practical conclusions for exercise of healthy faith, and final conclusions and recommendations on developing a sound theology and practice of faith for the twenty-first century. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.Th.
