No. of bitstreams: 1 EDENES MARIA SCHROLL LOSS.pdf: 3283056 bytes, checksum: b462cc2219aab59d022c471e4469c9f0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The agroindustrialization of corn base products through humid processing results in solid and liquid by-products, which disposed in inadequate form become sources of contamination and aggression to the environment. The present work had as its objective the valorization and use of these by-products of the corn chain (straw of corncob, corn steep licor and corncob), using the solid state fermentation (SSF) for the production of Pleurotus spp mushrooms, a product with important nutritional, functional and gastronomical characteristics. The first stage of this work comprised the characterization of the selected by-products (straw of corncob, corncob and corn steep licor), which were the base to the studies of composed-base obtaining with potential for the production of Pleurotus (ostreatus and florida). In the second stage a 23 factorial planning indicated that corncob straw + corn steep licor and water 1:1 in pH = 5,0 presented better biological efficiency for both species of Pleurotus (florida and ostrearus). Kinetic studies accomplished with the composed-base that presented better efficiency revealed a significant interaction between the variable crude fiber and C/N relation, indicating that these factors are important for the mushroom development process. The characterization of the fruiting bodies of the produced mushrooms indicated nutritional values equivalent to the ones in the literature, since it was obtained 92,18% of humidity, 13,50% of proteins, 1,00% of lipids, 65,76% of total carbohydrates, 4,56% of ashes, and energy value of 25,48 Kcal/100g. Quantitative analyses of the aflatoxin and zearalenona mycotoxins indicated inferior values to the limits set by the national and international legislations for corn grains. The presence of these pollutants indicates that they were absorbed from the substract by the fungus.

Ramos, Rógerson Rodrigues Freire 09 September 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-01T12:17:40Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2998252 bytes, checksum: 7aaeae0143740ad4944fe7bcbc9448eb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-09-09 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Polymer composites reinforced with agricultural lignocellulosic wastes have been widely studied over the years and increasingly realize the value of its use as an alternative to partial substitution of polymeric materials. Furthermore, the use of lignocellulosic materials in composite adds value to this type of waste which has been used mostly in the feeding of animals and/or fertilization of soils. In this work, corn cob (SM) was used as an alternative particulate filler to polypropylene (PP). PP/SM composites were extruded, injection molded and characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile, flexural and impact tests, and morphological analysis was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Composites with 5, 10, 20 and 30 wt.% corncob were prepared in order to evaluate the effect of filler content on composite properties. TGA analyses showed that thermal stability of the composites is not significantly affected by addition of corncob. DSC analyses showed that PP crystallinity increased with the presence of corn cob particles, however its transition temperatures did not change significantly. SEM photomicrographs of the composites indicated poor filler/matrix adhesion without evidence of effective stress transfer between the phases. Mechanical tests showed satisfactory results with a slight reduction in mechanical strength of the composites with up to 20 % corncob and decreases for higher filler content. This shows that corncob (a renewable, biodegradable and inexpensive material) can be used to partly replace PP (a non-biodegradable thermoplastic polymer derived from nonrenewable fossil source).

Influence of a Biodegradable Litter Amendment on the Pyrolysis of Poultry Litter

Tarrant, Ryan Carl Allen 02 November 2010 (has links)
The effects of adding a biodegradable litter amendment (AmmoSoak), developed from steam exploded corncobs, to poultry litter prior to pyrolysis on the product yields and qualities were investigated. Mixtures of litter and AmmoSoak were pyrolyzed in a bench-scale fluidized bed reactor. The objective of the second phase was to start-up a pilot-scale fluidized bed reactor unit. The poultry litter had a lower higher heating value (HHV), higher moisture, ash, nitrogen, sulfur, and chlorine contents than AmmoSoak. Analysis of the poultry litter indicated a mixture of volatiles, hemicelluloses, cellulose, lignin, ash, and proteins. AmmoSoak had a simpler composition than the litter; mainly hemicelluloses, cellulose, and lignin. Bench-scale studies indicated that adding AmmoSoak affected the yields and characteristics of the products. Addition of Ammosoak increased the bio-oil and syngas yields and decreased char yields. Adding AmmoSoak to the feed decreased the pH, water contents, initial viscosity, and the rate at which the viscosity increased with time, while densities and HHVs increased. The addition of Ammosoak to poultry litter also increased the carbon and oxygen contents of the boi-oils while nitrogen, hydrogen, sulfur, chlorine and ash contents decreased. A pilot-scale fluidized bed reactor was designed, constructed, installed and investigated for the pyrolysis of poultry litter. Fluidization and thermal equilibrium of the reactor were successfully demonstrated. The reactor was heated by combustion of propane. To ensure complete combustion, the combustion water was collected and compared to the stoichiometric yield. Complete combustion was achieved. Bio-oil yields on the pilot scale were lower than those obtained on the bench-scale pyrolysis unit. The water soluble fractions of the bio-oils were rich in oxygen. Water insoluble fractions were rich in carbon and ash. / Master of Science
