Attenuation correction techniques for tissue fluorescence

Bradley, Robert Stephen January 2006 (has links)
Fluorescence intensity measurements have the potential to facilitate the diagnoses of many pathological conditions. However, accurate interpretation of the measurements is complicated by the distorting effects of tissue scattering and absorption. Consequently, different techniques have been developed to attempt to compensate for these effects.

Feedback and Error Corrections : on Swedish Students' Written English Assignments

Eriksson, Maria January 2006 (has links)

It is important to think about how to correct an essay and what the students should learn from it. My aim in this paper, is to look into what different researchers have said about feedback on written assignments and carry out a study of the kind of feedback that is actually used in secondary school today – and of what students and teachers think about it.

The results show that underlining is the marking technique mostly used in the secondary school where I did my investigation. This technique was also mostly preferred amongst the students. Two teachers were interviewed and both said that they used underlining because experience has shown that this marking technique is the most effective one. Furthermore, the results from the essays differed when analyzing errors corrected with complete underlining, partial underlining, crossing out and giving the right answer. One marking technique got good results when dealing with one kind of error, and worse in others. My conclusion is that teachers need to vary their marking technique depending on the specific kind of error.

Also, the results from a questionnaire showed that most of the students would like to get feedback on every written assignment. Not many of them said that they were already getting it, although this was what both teachers claimed. To conclude, there are many different ways to deal with marking and feedback. The key-word seems to be variation. As long as teachers vary their ways of dealing with marking and giving feedback, they will eventually find one or two that are most effective. Involving the students in this decision can also be a good idea, if they are interested.

"How mean can you be?" : A study of teacher trainee and teacher views on error correction

Jakobsson, Sofie January 2010 (has links)
The present study investigates three teacher trainees and three teachers’ views on error correction during oral communication, and the similarities and differences between them. These six people were interviewed separately and they were asked six questions; the first five questions were asked to all six people but the last question differed between the teacher trainees and the teachers. My result shows that the teacher trainees are insecure when it comes to error correction and that the teachers´ sees it as a part of their job, and that is the biggest difference between them. The teacher trainees and the teachers focus on the same types of errors and those are the errors that can cause problems in communication, and that can be pronunciation errors, grammatical errors or vocabulary errors.

Perceived Benefits Of Three-way Observation On The Focal Areas Of Objectives Of The Activities, Error-correction Techniques And Group-work In A Study Conducted In An Upper-intermediate Class At Bilkent University School Of English Language

Yurtseven, Bengu 01 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to explore the perceived benefits of three-way observation on the focal areas of objectives of the activities, error-correction techniques, and group-work in an upper-intermediate class in Bilkent University School of English Language. The data was collected through five classroom observations, six post-observation reflection sheets, five focus-group interviews with the students, and five post-observation interviews with the observer. A total of 15 upper-intermediate level students, one teacher, and one observer v were involved in the study. The data was analyzed qualitatively and with the use of descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that the perceptions of the students, teacher, and observer on the focal areas show variability in terms of quantity and quality. It was also discovered that student feedback reveals more detailed information about each focal area and that each perception has its own value and should be taken into consideration by the teacher, observer and students. In this study, the researcher formed a two-step three-way observation model. According to this model, the teacher transfers the information gathered from student interviews to the observer. Based on this information, the observer presents suggestions to the teacher by creating solutions to an existing problem, developing ideas related to classroom activities or increasing the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes in a class.

Sistema de gerenciamento automático de reatores eletrônicos com ajuste do nível de luminosidade para múltiplas lâmpadas fluorescentes /

Ferreira, Castellane Silva. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: In this work, the development and implementation of an illumination fluorescent system with automatic management based on electronic ballast applied to multiple fluorescent lamps are presented. This research is directed in the development of the management and supervision of an automatic platform, allowing the control of luminosity, the remote actuation and also the programmable actuation according with the local business work and conditions of natural light of the environment. In addition, the ballast will provide the increase in the average lifetime for fluorescent lamps, considering a proposed protocol to pre-heating and ignition. The automatic actuation of the system is allowed by the coupling, of the luminosity and presence sensors. The control of fluorescent lamps by channel is executed by an ATMEL's AtMega8 microcontroller, which is responsible for the system automation. The management and monitoring platform uses a microcomputer with purpose to execute the implemented application, which will provide a friendly interface to the user. Thus, a protocol of communication was developed to allow a reliable communication of data, providing robustness and high reliability to the control of lighting system. Considering the processing of data acquired, was used a Serial Bus of communication with full duplex standard RS232 and RS485, with asynchronous transmission. Additionally, the system works in the master-slave mode, and the microcomputer is responsible for sending addresses and orders of action to microcontrollers, which identify and address data, in order to perform the programmed action to it, and in order to send data to the microcomputer, when requested by the user. / Orientador: Carlos Alberto Canesin / Coorientador: Fábio Toshiaki Wakabayashi / Banca: Falcondes Jose Mendes de Seixas / Banca: Ricardo Nederson do Prado / Mestre
