Nonlinear phonocardiographic Signal Processing

Ahlström, Christer January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this thesis work has been to develop signal analysis methods for a computerized cardiac auscultation system, the intelligent stethoscope. In particular, the work focuses on classification and interpretation of features derived from the phonocardiographic (PCG) signal by using advanced signal processing techniques. The PCG signal is traditionally analyzed and characterized by morphological properties in the time domain, by spectral properties in the frequency domain or by nonstationary properties in a joint time-frequency domain. The main contribution of this thesis has been to introduce nonlinear analysis techniques based on dynamical systems theory to extract more information from the PCG signal. Especially, Takens' delay embedding theorem has been used to reconstruct the underlying system's state space based on the measured PCG signal. This processing step provides a geometrical interpretation of the dynamics of the signal, whose structure can be utilized for both system characterization and classification as well as for signal processing tasks such as detection and prediction. In this thesis, the PCG signal's structure in state space has been exploited in several applications. Change detection based on recurrence time statistics was used in combination with nonlinear prediction to remove obscuring heart sounds from lung sound recordings in healthy test subjects. Sample entropy and mutual information were used to assess the severity of aortic stenosis (AS) as well as mitral insufficiency (MI) in dogs. A large number of, partly nonlinear, features was extracted and used for distinguishing innocent murmurs from murmurs caused by AS or MI in patients with probable valve disease. Finally, novel work related to very accurate localization of the first heart sound by means of ECG-gated ensemble averaging was conducted. In general, the presented nonlinear processing techniques have shown considerably improved results in comparison with other PCG based techniques. In modern health care, auscultation has found its main role in primary or in home health care, when deciding if special care and more extensive examinations are required. Making a decision based on auscultation is however difficult, why a simple tool able to screen and assess murmurs would be both time- and cost-saving while relieving many patients from needless anxiety. In the emerging field of telemedicine and home care, an intelligent stethoscope with decision support abilities would be of great value.

Optimising the operation of underground mine refrigeration plants and ventilation fans for minimum electricity cost / Christopher Swart

Swart, Christopher January 2003 (has links)
This study describes the development and use of a mathematical model that will enable mine operators to minimise the costs of electricity consumed by the ventilation and refrigeration systems used for environmental control in deep mines. This model was calibrated and tested by using actual data from a gold mine near Welkom in South Africa. In a first simulation, the mine's current practice of controlling conditions to a wet bulb temperature (Twb) of 25S°C, was optimised. The model demonstrated that this environmental condition could be sustained at lower electricity consumption. In so doing, the mine realised a saving of 30 000 kWh per day. The energy saving and load management led to a cost saving of R 1.5 million per year. However, a better indicator of environmental conditions is the Air Cooling Power index, (ACP). Research has shown that for hard physical work in hot conditions workers need an ACP of 300 w/m2. It was found that the case study mine actually supplied their workplace with a cooling capacity of 422 w/m2. The new model optimised the refrigeration and ventilation systems in such a manner that the workers were supplied with exactly 300 w/m2, no more and no less. It was found that by doing this, an electricity saving of 57 600 kWh per day could be realised when compared with the current mine practices. The energy saving and load management led to a potential cost saving of R 2.55 million per year. (Certain capital costs, such as for variable speed drives may have to be incurred to realise these savings.) The new model could be further extended to take advantage of the new Real Time Price offerings from Eskom It will be able to identify an operating point for the refrigeration and ventilation systems to supply 300 w/m2 for the workers, in real time, at the lowest electricity cost. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

Strategies Healthcare Managers Use to Reduce Hospital-Acquired Infections

Debesai, Yohannes 01 January 2019 (has links)
Every year, 2 million patients in the United States suffer with at least 1 hospital-acquired infection resulting in an estimated 99,000 deaths annually. The purpose of this exploratory single case study was to explore strategies healthcare managers in U.S. hospitals used to reduce hospital-acquired infections. The study included face-to-face, semistructured interviews with 5 healthcare managers from a hospital in Maryland who were successful in reducing these infections. The conceptual framework was human capital theory. Field notes, hospital documents, and transcribed interviews were analyzed to identify themes regarding strategies used by healthcare managers. The data analysis and coding process resulted in 5 major themes: use of HAI-related data; implementation of detailed cleaning method; implementation of define, measure, analyze, implement, and control; education and training of staff; and implementation of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. The findings from this study might benefit healthcare managers in implementing and sustaining successful strategies to reduce hospital-acquired infections. The implications for positive social change included reducing hospital-acquired infections, thereby leading to fewer hospitalization days for patients and a faster recovery time to return to normal life. Reducing hospital acquired infections might reduce patient deaths related to the infections.

Technological innovation to support the decision-making process for open pit mining: the application of technological models and semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying scenario\'s evaluation.

Nunes, Rodrigo Augusto 01 April 2019 (has links)
This work presents two innovative ways to evaluate mining projects. The first is the application of a Technological Model in a copper-gold mine and the second is a decision making model to evaluate the benefit of semi-mobile in pit crusher and conveyor alternatives during the early stages of mining projects. In order to improve the process and to maximize the production and/or value of a mining project, there needs to be an integration of the geology, the mine plan, the processing and the geometallurgy data. In order to accomplish this, a new methodology is proposed for the creation of a technological model. This model can be interpreted as the consolidation of the different models required for a better understanding of the geological and technical information of the deposit. This concept was developed and applied at a copper and gold mine site located in Brazil. Based on the evaluation of different blasting and mill productivity scenarios through a pit-to-plant approach, it was possible to obtain operational short-term gains such as a 10.7% increase in the plant production rate and a 2.2% increase in the crusher\'s feed rate with little or no capital investment. Another important issue faced by mining companies is related to material handling. A significant cost in the operating budget of most mining operations arises from purchasing and maintaining haulage trucks. Recently, in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) has been subject to research because of its potential to reduce haulage costs. A decision-making model was created to identify early on in a project whether or not the semi-mobile IPCC (SMIPCC) is an appropriate alternative to the conventional truck haulage based on the loading and hauling approaches. The method is based on cost analysis and the evaluation of environmental impacts, being successfully tested at an existing open-pit mine, where the results indicated that the IPCC was the most cost-effective option for the operation. Although the IPCC\'s initial CAPEX was 60% higher than the conventional approach, the IPCC\'s OPEX was 43% lower, resulting in a 28% reduction of the life-of-mine net present cost (NPC).

Badenes Badenes, Borja 01 February 2021 (has links)
[EN] One of the biggest challenges for the ground source heat pump market is the high cost associated with drilling geothermal borehole heat exchangers. Achieving more efficient geothermal heat exchangers would reduce this cost, since a shorter exchanger length would be required to obtain the same working temperatures in it (same efficiency of the heat pump). The thermal efficiency of a geothermal heat exchanger is characterized by its borehole thermal resistance. This borehole thermal resistance depends on a number of parameters, mainly: properties and flow rate of the working fluid that flows through the borehole heat exchanger, diameter of the geothermal borehole, geometry and materials of the heat exchanger pipe and the properties of the borehole grouting material. The higher thermal resistance of the heat exchanger, the less heat is transferred between the heat carrier fluid and the ground, resulting in an increased requirement for the length of the buried heat exchanger. Consequently, it is essential to reduce this parameter to the minimum possible. Therefore, the main objective of this Ph. Doctoral Thesis is to carry out, based on a comprehensive analytical model of quantification of the impact of the above mentioned parameters, a detailed study to analyze their combined influence on the thermal resistance of the geothermal borehole, but also exploring this effect in other less researched areas, such as economic costs of running the exchanger and operating it (electricity consumption of the heat pump and associated pumping costs). / This research has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program under grant agreement No [657982], [727583] and [792355]. / Badenes Badenes, B.
