Partindo do conceito bakhtiniano da dialogia, essa dissertação discute sobre como os discursos sobre o sexo, o pecado e a mulher foram se constituindo no ocidente ao longo da história, desde a Grécia antiga, até o século XII, quando ressurgiram os textos clássicos e uma nova forma de amor foi inventada: o amor cortês. Para tanto, aqui é analisado o Tratado do Amor Cortês de André Capelão, clérigo da corte de Champagne, que condensa os vários discursos sobre o sexo e as mulheres, a eles respondendo, polemizando ou pactuando, fornecendo aos discursos que o sucederam um novo discurso com o qual polemizar ou pactuar. Para que conseguisse entender, de fato, quais são os sentidos que podemos atribuir a esse tratado, sem que ignore que ele foi escrito por um homem que respondia a seu tempo, foram narradas aqui várias histórias de vida que, aliadas aos discursos que as constituíram, nos fornecem uma imagem muito mais nítida daquela época que nos escapa pelo tempo que dela nos separamos. Nesse afã, entramos em contato com os discursos da filosofia grega que criaram um novo mundo, sustentado na razão, que extirpava de si o prazer; discursos esses que legavam ao homem o cuidado de si, de sua vida, de sua alma e de seu corpo. Vemos também como esses discursos são compactuados pela Igreja que os transforma aos seus desígnios e assume para si o cuidado de si dos homens, criando técnicas e saberes para exercer seu poder que foi consolidado, por fim, com a confissão obrigatória e com a criação do Santo Ofício / Abstract: One is able able to turn several different views backwards to the Middle Ages, here, however, we chose only one to be presented. Bearing in mind the Bakhtinian concept of dialogism, this dissertation discusses how the discourses about sex, sin, and women have been built in the west throughout the History, from the ancient Greece to the twelfth century, when the classical texts returned and a new way of loving was reinvented: the courtly love. To do it so, it is here analyzed the The Art of Courtly Love by Andreas Capellanus, a clergyman of the court of champagne. This book condenses several discourses about sex and women, responding to them either bringing controversies or supporting. To be able to fully understand, which are the senses one can attribute to this treaty, without overlooking the fact that it was written by a man who responded to his time, there has been narrated a variety of life stories. These stories, together with the discourses that constituted them, helped us to overcome the gap of time that separates us from them, giving us a much neater image of such period. With this purpose, we went through the Greek philosophy discourses. The new world created by them was sustained by reason, eliminating personal pleasure; these discourses bore the idea of self-caring. Men would take care of their lives, souls and bodies. We can notice how these discourses are supported by the church, that transforms them according to its wishes and interests/rules. The church assumes, then, the role of assisting men¿s self-caring, by creating techniques and knowledge to execute its power, which was consolidated, at last, with the compulsory confession and with the creation of the Inquisition / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

"There's a real hole here": Female Masochism and Spectatorship in Michael Haneke's La Pianiste

In this project, I examine the relationship between female masochism, performance, and spectatorship in Michael Haneke’s film La Pianiste (2001). The film stages a relationship to sexuality that structures the subject’s excruciating negotiations with the other as always mediated by the law, the letter, or the body as instrument, which is allegorized by the protagonist’s occupation as a piano teacher. In my analysis, I identify the ways in which the film paradoxically offers a critique of mediation’s effect on the feminine position while encouraging viewers to confront the possibility that desire is only possible through these mediations. Contributing to feminist theory and psychoanalytic film theory, I foreground the way in which the film’s complex portrayal of female masochism produces indeterminacy via masochistic spectatorship. Ultimately, I argue that the unmarked position of feminine masochism, which is historically, psychoanalytically, and literarily reserved for male subjects, challenges the spectator to take enjoyment into account when approaching mediations of violence and sexuality.

"FLIPPING THE SCRIPT": FEMININE CULPABILITY MODELS IN FIFTEENTH-CENTURY IBERIAN TEXTS

This dissertation explores the ways in which feminine culpability is verbally articulated by the male courtly lover to his beloved lady within the amorous relationship in three fifteenth-century Spanish sentimental novels: Diego de San Pedro’s Cárcel de amor, published in 1492, and two of Juan de Flores' sentimental novels, Grimalte y Gradissa and Grisel and Mirabella, both published in approximately 1495, and how these motifs of feminine culpability are subverted in the anonymous fifteenth-century Catalan chivalric novel Curial e Güelfa. This subversion of culpability motifs is facilitated in Curial e Güelfa since there is also a subversion of gender roles within the amorous relationship of the novel's protagonists: a female lover, Güelfa, who courts her male beloved, Curial. To execute this study, I begin by discussing the origins of this rhetoric of feminine culpability in patristic, Biblical and philosophical texts, illustrating their sedimentation into the collective ideologies of medieval audiences. I also examine these feminine culpability models in Provençal lyric poetry written and recited by Occitan troubadours between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, as one of its particular genres, the mala cansó, aims to not only blame the beloved lady, but also to publicly defame her, a threat that is also ever-present in the words of the male lover in the sentimental novel. After analyzing the tactics used by the male courtly lover to blame the beloved lady for his suffering and the demise of the relationship, I demonstrate how these same tactics are employed by the female characters of Curial e Güelfa toward the beloved man. However, feminine blame still occurs in Curial e Güelfa, manifested as feminine self-blame and blame between women, while the male characters engage in self-absolution, absolution of other men, and utter shirking of the blame. The theoretical framework employed is that of medieval canon law, and the way in which culpability was determined under this law from the twelfth century onward, which was by the intentions of the offender at the time of the crime or transgression rather than the consequences of the transgression. If we examine these fifteenth-century courtly love texts, it becomes clear that the beloved lady is innocent, while the male lover himself is the culpable party. Finally, following Rouben C. Cholakian's reading of the troubadour poetry through the work of twentieth-century psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, I conclude that although the poet-lover verbally enunciates erotic metaphors and adulating language toward his beloved lady in the guise of courtly love, the true desire that he cannot articulate is to dominate, to overpower, and possibly to eradicate the feminine. Thus, in a Lacanian sense the notion that courtly love literature praises the woman is a fallacy. Both the poet-lover of the Provençal lyric and the courtly lover of the sentimental novel subvert the concept of alleged feminine superiority and exaltation in these texts. / Spanish

Velmi utěšená a kratochvílná historie o krásné panně Mageloně, dceři krále z Neapolis, a o jednom rytíři jménem Petrovi, znamenitého hraběte z Provincí synu (The Delightful and Entertaining Story of the Beautiful Young Maiden Maguelone, Daughter of the King of Naples, and of a certain Knight called Peter, the Son of the Distinguished Count of Provence) printed anonymously in Olomouc in 1780, is one of those works into which literary science has hitherto scarcely ever inquired. It is nevertheless a text with a very long and complex genesis. We can follow its development from a medieval French tale of love, via a German adaptation to an early modern Czech popular prose romance. In the story of Maguelone, close attention is paid, as the very title suggests, to the main heroine, which is also a theme which in research into older Czech literature has been hitherto rather neglected. In the present thesis, we focus therefore on the analysis of this character. In particular, we try to show how the way she is portrayed is significantly influenced by the medieval conception of courtly literature, despite the fact that courtly epic literature is not otherwise particularly well documented in literature written in Czech and left no particularly rich tradition behind it. Ford Madox Ford's Good Soldier in a Modern World

Ford often wrote about virtuous gentlemen ruined by the modern society he saw developing around him. While Ford Madox Ford was writing The Good Soldier, ther was a sense of displacement in England and the class system was starting to crumble. Edward Ashburnham, one of the two male protagonists in The Good Soldier, is described as a Chevalier Bayard and there are definitely some similarities between Ashburnham and Bayard. For instance, both men lived during periods of great societal change and both faithfully served their countries. However, the feudal lifestyle that was appropriate for Bayard in the fifteenth-century is unavailable to Ashburnham in the twentieth-century. In The Good Soldier, Ford used the old ideals of chivalry and courtly love codes to produce a character, Edward Ashburnham, who represents the loss of traditional values in a modern society.

Apesar de fazerem parte das literaturas de divertimento da corte, os Lais são um tipo específico de registro histórico acerca da sociedade aristocrática medieval. Propomo-nos neste trabalho, por meio de uma análise centrada na temática do amor cortês presente nesta fonte, refletir sobre a construção de uma nova representação mental de amor. Neste mesmo sentido, respeitando a especificidade da fonte, buscaremos apreender as realidades sociais e o imaginário medieval, tentando compreender de que maneira Maria de França retrata a sociedade de seu tempo, com seus preceitos e interdições, ao mesmo tempo, reafirmando certos valores e insurgindo contra outros. / Abstract: During Central Medium Age (XI-XIII), exactly at the second half of XII Century, Lais de Marie de France were written, literary writings which discuss the Courtly Love. Although they are considered funny literature of the court, Lais are a specific history record about medieval aristocratic society. Purpose of my thesis is create a precise register of inversion in chante-fable from XIIIth century: Aucassin et Nicolette. Main point of view is connected with a converse of woman and man part. This noticeable destabilization brings an inversion of further rules defined by literary discourse of medieval literature, above all by courtly culture. The first part included a basic definitions of misogyny, courtly love, chivarly and carnival principle. Following analysis of Aucassin et Nicolette indicates medieval need to show aberrations from social order and tries to find way to cure that "illness" of age.

In this thesis, a literary historic path on the development of the lyric expression of courtly love will be created. The path will take us from the Provence through Germany and Sicily, and up to the Tuscany of the thirteen's century. The poetic characteristics of the hohe Minne and dolce stil novo will be particularly highlighted in order to facilitate the comprehension of their similarities and differences. It is understood that it will not be possible to offer a complete interpretation of the two lyric expressions. Rather, this thesis wishes to offer a basis for the development of further comparative studies between the German and Italian lyric expressions that were inspired by the Provencal courtly love. As representatives of the evolution of the poetry of love in Germany and Italy, Walther von der Vogelweide and Guido Cavalcanti were chosen for the innovative character of their poetry and the artistic quality of the results they achieved.
